There were many meetings for the Staff Coast to Coast journey, the group left All Saints’ Academy at 12.30pm on Thursday in half term. Both minibus and van were packed with bikes, staff and all their equipment. After a very picturesque drive up to the foot of Snowdon, we arrived at our first bunk house by early evening. We were then joined by Chris, who was to act as our second guide. He had ridden his bike 160 miles
up from Cardiff – all in the same day! That evening we had dinner and the nerves began to kick in. An early night was definitely in order. By half past ten everyone was fast asleep trying not to think about the challenge to come. As the birds started tweeting on the Friday morning, staff started to emerge from their beds, loading up on porridge and bananas, checking they had all of their liquid requirements. Ready for wheels down at 7am we left
the accommodation at 6.45am. After a few bike mishaps (burst inner tubes, a gear failure) the group set off on stage one from Caernarfon to Newtown in mid Wales, leaving a slightly oily Mr Pierce and Miss Wellington to follow in the support vehicles. The first stage was around 25 miles, then we regrouped, fuelled up on calories and headed off for the next stage. As you can imagine, being around Snowdon the roads were very steep and quite intimidating for the less experienced in the group. The third stage was probably the most intimidating of day one. There was a huge climb followed by steep downhill terrain where some people reached over 40mph. The group ended up split in two, with the more confident riders taking the lead. The group met us at around 2pm exhilarated with what they had already achieved. Mr Pinless was among the small group that had been taken the long way round by Chris, they had ridden 108 miles, with the rest of them completing an impressive 98 miles. Day one ended at the amazingly beautiful, but remote, bunk house
near Rhayader. Hot showers and BBQ food were awaiting the cyclists. Day two was an early start, we were up at 5.30am to greet the team with hot porridge, tea and coffee as they made their way to the communal area. Mr Pierce motivated the team with the traditional, Circle of Life song blasting from the speakers of the minibus. Tired but still smiling, off they went. Stage one was a quick stop in a pretty village, before an easier stage of the ride, a flat quiet road, with a perfect, smooth surface. Just what was needed before the five mile climb up Brecon. This was a very gruelling road, especially with tired legs, but the view from the top was amazing. The end was now in sight. The last stop was a quick refuel in Merthyr Tydfil before the final leg to Cardiff. The last ride was the beautiful Taff Trail into Cardiff docks, where the team were presented with a well-earned glass of fizz. We are exceptionally proud of the whole team. Not only for the amount of money raised (£2200) but for also proving that if you put your mind to it and put the effort in anything is possible!
