All Saints’ achieve record results! All Saints’ Academy students achieved their best ever Maths and English results in the most challenging GCSE examinations ever. An outstanding 12% improvement at A*-C GCSE Mathematics heralded a significant amount of excellent grades at the higher level including several at the new maximum Grade 9. This puts a good number of All Saints’ students in the top 3 percent of all students nationally. Our improved A-level and GCSE results this year reflects our drive for all students to succeed, underpinned by the highest standards in teaching, learning and discipline. This marks the start of a future where All Saints’ Academy students will increasingly stand shoulder to shoulder with the highest achieving students in the country.
‘This year has seen the introduction of the most challenging examinations in 30 years. I am delighted that our students’ hard work and studiousness has paid off.’

CLASS OF 2017
Success Edition, October 2017
The All Saints’ Academy Newspaper
All Saints’ Academy students rise to the challenge The Academic Year of 2016-17 marked the biggest changes in national examinations for 30 years. The bar was raised and all GCSE and A Level exams got much harder. However, never daunted by the challenge, our Year 11 and Year 13 students worked even harder to achieve the greatest ever success of any Academy year group who have gone before them. Our Year 13 students gained the best ever A Level results with a 100% pass rate, with improved results at A*-B and A*-C and our GCSE students recorded the greatest higher level outcomes at A*-C and 9-4 grades. Mr McN Our focus on ensuring excellence in teaching, learning iffe and assessment coupled with our students practising an excellent Principa l attitude towards their learning has made sure they all succeed. All Saints’ Academy is one of a minority of schools to improve results in the summer of 2017, which shows that an attitude for excellence and hard work really does pay off. Some of the A Level results included 40% of our Photography students gaining grades at A* and 90% achieving A*-B. 100% of our Law students achieved a pass with 64% of these achieving grades at A*-A. Philosophy and Ethics was another overwhelming success with 100% of students getting A*-B grades. Our GCSE results are phenomenal with a 3% improvement in English and a whopping 12% improvement in Mathematics, with four students gaining the new Grade 9; putting them in-line with the top 2% of students in the country. There were also fantastic gains in other subjects with a 19% improvement in Physics, Computer Science and Catering. A 10% improvement in Biology, Religious Studies and 11% in Geography. Subjects such as History and GCSE Business Studies are performing well above national average, with outstanding results too in Health and Social Care, PE, Art and Design and Music. I am so proud of the significant improvement our students and staff have achieved this year, as it marks the beginning of a new era of continued success because our current Year 11 and Year 13 students are destined to outstrip the achievements of 2017 in 2018. No matter how high the bar is set, All Saints’ Academy is now in a position to achieve it. Why? Because we have the dedication and expectation for all to thrive and succeed. Well done on a great 2017 and we look forward with confidence to an exciting future.

Hard work pays off! n ilkinso l W r M a rincip Vice P
What a successful year for our students and their families. It really is an honour to spend time with students during August to see the sheer delight in the achievements that all of the hard work and dedication has brought. The Cotswold Hall is always packed with teachers too, who have interrupted their holiday because they are just as eager to learn how well their students have done. This is just one of the many tangible signs of the strength of togetherness that exists in the All Saints' family. So, on behalf of all of the Class of 2017, I'd like to offer a huge thanks to the vast team of teachers and support staff who worked with equal determination, skill and effort to enable all to reach their target grades this summer. Thank you one and all. The task this year, was made even more challeng-
ing for the teachers in providing the expert guidance in Mathematics and English as the new GCSE courses began. These courses are well known to be more difficult than previous courses and offer a change from traditional letter grades to number grades from 1 to 9. In the new courses a grade 9 is awarded to only the very highest achieving students (top 3% in England), while a grade 7 is equivalent to a grade A and a grade 4 is equivalent to a grade C on the previous exams. The work done by our teams of teachers to ensure that they knew how best to teach the new courses resulted in our best ever set of GCSE results in these critical subjects and we are so proud. This year most other subjects are moving to the new GCSE 9-1 courses, and we will do just as well in those. In the academic year 2016-17 a clear shift in levels of commitment to studies was seen by the Year 11 students, following the lead of our teaching team. The teaching staff met on a weekly basis to look at every student in detail to analyse how best to help them achieve their targets and quickly implemented plans which our students took up with relish. Every lunch time, evening of the week and even weekends were used to work with students in addition to their classroom studies and homework - it really was a level above what any previous group of All Saints' students have done and has set a standard for all future groups to match. We have no doubt that students will continue this drive to succeed which is now part and parcel of student life in the family at All Saints' Academy.

My biggest achievement during my time at Reading was representing the university after winning an internal negotiation competition where we reached the regional final. My advice for students would be to always work on building your CV. Part time jobs and extra curricular activities will really help going forward. Enjoy this stage of your lives, it’s exciting and something you should really try and embrace! Don’t get too disappointed if things don’t always go your way. I was rejected by my firm choice university on results day and it all worked out well in the end. All Saints’ gave me advice on my personal statement and were always there as an extra proof reader. Use the facilities available to you they are extremely knowledgeable! I have accepted a job to be a trainee solicitor but the job position doesn’t open until 2018. I am currently studying the LPC course at the University of Law in Bristol. I am also studying for a Masters in Law and Business at the same time as part of my course.
My advice would be to do what you love, it’s a long three years if you pick a course that you don’t enjoy! All Saints’ helped me reached my goals for university in several ways, from encouraging me to apply to university in the first place, to supporting me with my personal statement and helping me prepare an outstanding portfolio showcasing my work, which gained me 5/5 of my university choices. The staff at All Saints’ always supported and encouraged me through the process of setting and achieving my goals and they continued to do so throughout my three years at university. I was lucky enough to find a graduate job just a week after I left university. My current job role is Regulatory Communications Assistant in the marketing department at Zurich Insurance. I may not have fallen directly in to the media market but I am transferring the skills and knowledge I have gained from my media and communications degree into marketing and am enjoying working in this challenging but enjoyable role.
When looking at universities I would make sure to research the area along with the university. You will be living there for the next three years so make sure to check what the local area has to offer. Go along to university open days and ask questions! I went to see three universities and liked the University of Exeter best. I also liked the local towns surrounding the university which was important to me when choosing. The teachers at All Saints’ were fantastic at supporting me when making course adjustments that I needed to continue on to my next step. They provided me with help and guidance to be successful in my studies. After graduating I did some work experience with the Mr Parkinson in the Maths department at All Saints’ Academy and have been accepted to study for a PGCE to become a secondary Maths Teacher at the University of Exeter.
Don’t be afraid to look around at universities to make sure you choose the right one for you. University is not for everyone but if you are looking into university it can be the most amazing experience. Without All Saints’ I would not have achieved the qualifications I needed for university. I also would not have discovered my passion for the arts and would therefore not be where I am today. Now I have graduated university with a first class degree I am hoping to study a PGCE in post compulsory education, however I am currently working for APM on the NCS programme (National Citizens Service) mentoring school leavers (16 year olds) teaching life skills, independence and promoting social action. This job is unbelievably inspiring and I hope to go further and engage more young people before they start further education.
Make sure you use all of the support that All Saints’ Academy offers as they do care. If you are wanting to go to university make sure you go to the open days as it will give you a good insight of how you will live for at least three years of your life! All Saints’ Academy helped me reach my goals for university through a lot of support from teachers and the pastoral team. They gave me goals to achieve in order to get the best grades I possibly could to give me the best chance of joining the university that I wished to attend. Now I have finished university hopefully I will be a PE teacher back at All Saints’ Academy some day but at the moment I am taking a break away from teaching and sport due to an injury. However, I am currently learning a trade in plastering and after this I wish to get back into sport and teaching/coaching.
