Commodifying Nature Data centres perform a gesture of commodifying humans. We re=present such a scenario. But with fish, being subject to the commodification. Taking a resource, relatively abundant in nature, and encasing it in resin, for our pleasure, was a cynical representation of data in our society today.

The Vorticists’ obsession with the machine
David Bomberg’s iconic painting, The Mud Baths became an inspiration for the design form. The Vorticists were fascinated with the machine age. However, that fascination was to end with the start of the First world war. We again find ourselves fascinated with the machine in the form of AI and Big Data. The design of my building tries to imagine a future of a new order, a future of no-order. The sequence of this building sets itself up for a collapse. Laying itself flat for a future unknown.
The collapsing timber structure is inspired by the Vorticists

Analysing traffic conditions By conducting a research on Stromness harbour conditions and the amount of tourists that visit Orkney and Stromness on a yearly basis, I determined the exact location of the proposal.

Analysing the Net-works A play on words. An attempt to analyse networks and relationships on site.

Keeping up with the times No middleman seems to be safe in the digital economy. Keeping that in mind, this proposal devises a peer to peer system, where the fish monger is directly brought in contact with the consumer. Where the board-walk and the boat, in essence becomes a point of trade.

The fish market on site This proposal, seemingly large. Forms a striking addition to the shore of Stromness. It attaches itself to the one of the Piers that jut out into the open sea. It attempts to make a gesture similar to the one the piers make.

System of Utility of Temporary Plug in fish market
37
A Temporary, Plug in Market place. The first element of this proposal is the Plug in fish market that is temporarily inhabited when the Fish boats come in, and Plug in to the marketplace. It forms a site of meaningful interaction. Traffic varies everyday. The site comes alive.

Plugging In fish Understanding how man has commodified nature. Fish in Plastic bags, displayed in Pakistan. The Abstraction model explained the same idea.
The metaphor ‘Plugging-in’ was quite essential to the process
43
A de-constructed understanding of the interaction between the fish market and the consumer at the board-walk.

Phasing the building into Daily constructed Spans
A project of this scale has to be phased. It has been approximated, that a 4 span phase will take 1.5 days to be erected by a 4 man team. This estimation has been made in accordance with Norwegian Fish drying racks. A precedent for this structure.

63
An assault on your senses. The Food lab, makes the 2nd aspect of the proposal. It is meant to provide an experience of Haphazard activity. This is where, after buying the fish from the Fisherman, you take it to get cooked. It is a kitchen space which is run by Orcadians and Robot arms as kitchen assistants.

fishcoin
by using fish coin fishmongers have increased awareness about the daily stock/ a relationship now exists between them and the fishermen
fishermen use the same network they give updates on their experiences and themselves through this system to reach the fish market/ a boat is required upon buying a ticket/ you may avail a fish coin that can be used to purchase fish in the market
fish coin is not a currency it is a network
