Transformative Training

FEATURE STORY

Transformative Training BY JULIA O’CAREY

O

n August 20, over two hundred workers and trainers converged on the SALT Center near Siem Reap, Cambodia. Tim and Wendy Maddocks, founders of SALT Ministries, their children and staff worked tirelessly preparing the grounds for this training. Due to the generosity and vision of key donors, ASAP was able to invite ASAP workers and workers supported by the Cambodian Adventist Mission, International Children’s Care, Gospel Outreach, Global Mission, Jesus for Asia, Adventist Frontier Missions, and the Caleb Center. Each day began with singing, an inspirational message, and united prayer. Then, the workers separated into four groups. Come with me as we take a quick look around. As we peek into the Intergenerational Discipleship Training room, groups of children, leaders, parents, principals, and

church planters are excitedly sharing ideas as they discuss Pr. Don MacLafferty’s book Follow. You hear laughing and chatter as they respond to Pr. Don and his training team: George Carr, Gerard Carter, Curtis Letniak and the Cambodia Adventist Mission leaders. You see simple, powerful illustrations and eyes lighting up as concepts come to life. You don’t want to leave because they just began a fun group activity to illustrate discipleship. Let’s head to the Education classes. Your eyes scan over eighty fully-engaged teachers in the open-air building, writing in journals and then discussing in groups with Dr. Shirley Freed and her team of teacher trainers from churchsponsored Burman University in Alberta, Canada. You see brightly colored poster-boards on the wall, illustrating active learning techniques they have experienced. You spot a group of children poring over colorful, Bible-based

“We often do a cost-benefit analysis before we take on responsibilities or work, and if we don’t feel that the work is worth what we’ll be getting in return, we don’t do it. But these precious workers realize the urgency of bringing Christ to the unreached and realize that the promise of an eternal reward is more than they could ask for.” —Angy Plata

easy readers in Khmer. They just can’t wait for school to start! The atmosphere is fresh and alive as the teachers “eat up” every chapter of the book Education, translated and condensed into a teachers’ manual for them. Next, we visit the church and see an earnest group of church planters listening to a practical presentation from Pr. Saeng Saengthip, ASAP Associate Director, on how to craft a powerful sermon. Tears well up as you listen to church planters share their testimonies of souls saved. Your heart aches as you hear their questions on how to deal with the challenges they face in the field. You had no idea how hard it is for these workers. In a school room, medical missionaries perfect their massage techniques on one another. You offer to be their “guinea pig.” Their trainer, Dr. Htwe Lay from Myanmar, systematically gives positive feedback to each person in her gentle way. Now they know how to diagnose and treat diseases, Bible verses to share with the sick, and much more. Navy, ASAP’s newest medical missionary, spontaneously shares, “Everything in the training is so helpful. I feel equipped to go back to my Muslim village and help my Cham people.” After a delicious meal of brown rice, Cambodian curry, stir-fry, salad, and fresh tropical fruit, lovingly prepared by

Wendy Maddocks and her team, we end our tour back with the trainers, debriefing and praying together at day’s end. You discover the training touched the trainers just as much as the trainees. Listen to a few of the sixteen trainers who sacrificed time, money, and sleep to share their hearts and knowledge with these precious workers. “The most meaningful part of the training for me was seeing the light of the Holy Spirit on the faces of God’s workers as they were showered with His love and knowledge.” —Gerard Carter “Going to Cambodia with ASAP was a life-changing experience for my husband and I because it has inspired us towards a future calling in missions…. Chomnea Noeum (ASAP church planter)… spoke of his trials… and how strong the devil is working in Cambodia…. Usually every Sabbath, people bring their friends who are demon possessed to the church for Chomnea to heal them, and God answers his prayers. God works visible miracles in Cambodia, which was a wake-up call for me living in North America…. —Melissa Barritt “I was delighted to see how the literacy schools were really the beginning of church plants. Clearly the community appreciated the efforts to help their children learn to read and write.… The teachers who came for the training were so dedicated and constantly acknowledged God’s leading in their personal lives and in the life of their schools. They were an inspiration to our Burman team.” —Shirley Freed We came together for one main purpose, to unite in seeking the Holy Spirit, our greatest need. And the Lord showed up in a powerful way. Some workers were in tears and did not want to leave, but we know that the Holy Spirit went with them. In the dark, difficult corners of Cambodia, where Buddhist and Muslim neighbors do not understand the efforts of these workers, Jesus is there. On the Cover: The joy of the Holy Spirit was evident in the faces of the trainees (photo by Gerard Carter). Effectual Fervent Prayers BY BRENDA KIŠ

I

magine a closed country with a large village and a large group of Seventh-day Adventist believers who are dedicated to God and truth. These believers of an ethnic minority are often persecuted for their faith until one day nearly five hundred of them decide to escape by crossing two more countries until they arrive in a better place.

That leaves only two Adventist families remaining in the village. “We should remove these two families and help them resettle in another village where we have Adventist church members,” suggests one ASAP pastor. “They will be safer and will have other believers with whom they can worship. That way they won’t lose their faith.” Now listen to the response of the two families. “We don’t want to leave this village. Please pray for us to plant a church here! Pray for two weeks. If there are no results during that period, then we will move,” they tell their church leaders. And so the leaders gather all the believers from a nearby area and go to the village to intercede for the villagers. The first day they fast and pray. The second day they fast and pray. Then something happens on the third day. Suddenly and quite unexpectedly, the leader of the Sunday church in the village comes to the group and asks to learn about their beliefs! After he realizes that what they are teaching is biblical, he shares it with all the members of his congregation. As a result, five families decide to become Seventh-day Adventists. The prayers for a new church plant have been answered! 4

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16b, KJV). In a sister country, ASAP church planter Stephen Thid* receives a call from a desperate woman. “I’ve heard of you, Pastor. Please come help free my husband from the spirits!” she cries. At night, the evil spirits would frighten his children who ran out of the house. The villagers had asked the Sunday pastor to pray for him but nothing had resulted from his efforts. No one had been able to do anything for him. Pastor Thid recognized the seriousness of the situation and invited two other Adventist pastors to join him. After praying and fasting for three days, they went to the village of the possessed man who was also crazed by drugs. In spite of the apparently hopeless situation, they gathered around him and earnestly prayed for his healing before returning home. Imagine their joy to learn that this 30-year-old man returned to his right mind soon after they left. Today, he attends church every Sabbath. He is a free man! God is at work. He invites us also to become effectual fervent pray-ers through fasting and prayer. Let’s partner with Him on behalf of desperate humanity.

PROJECT UPDATE

Ton Yort, the Fighter BY BRENDA KIŠ

N

Middle: Ton Yort and Sim Thearith studying the Bible together

ot long ago I was one of the rebellious ones. My teen friends and I often got into fights, especially when we played soccer and something went wrong. School was the last place I wanted to be and finally, the principal suspended me for fighting. That memorable day I was sulking outside the school when ASAP church planter Sim Thearith showed up. He knew my potential and had mercy on me. Encouraging me to go inside with him, he pled my case and asked for another chance. Amazingly, the principal reinstated me. This second chance really touched me and made the love of Jesus seem real. Right there I decided this was a God I wanted to serve. I’m not yet 18 but I now teach 52 second graders at a new literacy school in Cambodia. Established only a year and a half ago, it grew from 2 to 102 students in the first year and then to 158 students in the last five months! My joy is to introduce these children to Jesus, and I’ve actually come to love teaching because I learn so much myself. Sim Thearith mentors me and the other volunteer teachers. We visit our students’ homes and spend time praying for them. Nou, a 15-year-old student, asked me what it feels like to be a Christian. All I can say is that I have such peace and joy serving the Lord. I’ve been able to teach him how to pray and study the Bible. In fact, Sim Thearith and I and 15 other young people studied for baptism every night for five months. Yes, it feels different now. Before this, no one in the village would talk to me, but now they greet me with respect as a Christian teacher. There have been so many changes in my life. I used to have tuberculosis but God healed me. I’m back in school trying to finish high school. Even though my Buddhist family pressures me to go to school on Sabbath when exams are given, I have been able to stand for truth. Now I fight the fight of faith!

EXCITING EVANGELISM

Restoring Dreams BY BRENDA KIŠ

every morning after breakfast and help people in the villages with whatever they need. Sometimes she takes people to the clinic and translates for them. Sometimes she herself gives natural treatments and prays for the sick persons. Sometimes she simply befriends families and helps them enroll their children in the mission school. Last year she took a Baptist family and their 15-year-old son to see our school. They liked the campus and structure of the mission school and today, as a result of his daily contact with the staff, the young man is a baptized member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Every day Nin Si’s schedule is different as she listens to the Lord’s leading. On this day she was visiting from house to house in a certain village when she came to the hovel of Saw See. Recognizing that he would die if left alone in his condition, she arranged to have him taken to the hospital where she visited him often. Rallying church members, she asked them to give from their own meager funds so he could have good food, necessary medications, and whatever else he might need. After ten days of medical care, he recovered and was able to go home.

Saw See accepted Bible studies and was baptized through the care and faithful witness of ASAP medical missionary, Nin Si.

S

aw See* convulsed in another spasm of coughing. Blood spewed from his mouth as he tried to regain control. Only 30 years old, he felt like an old man already. Poverty, tuberculosis, and an addiction to alcohol assaulted his physical reserves and drowned any dreams he might have had at one time. Then Nin Si,* an ASAP medical missionary, arrived at his door. Nin Si, a 50-year-old single woman, lives in Myanmar. She is constantly on the lookout for new people who need to hear the Good News. Her search-and-rescue method is to go out

Nin Si’s reward was to have him come and thank her for her kindness. She seized the opportunity to tell him that God was the One who had healed him. Later she invited him to church and gave him Bible studies. He began to attend church regularly, gave up drinking, and was one of eight people baptized last October through her efforts. Today Saw See is being discipled through follow-up activities and sometimes accompanies Nin Si as she visits other villagers. Soon the cycle of evangelism will be complete as Saw See begins his own outreach efforts. Nin Si has a dream to start a nursery school in a Buddhist village. She has no money but she has prayer. Passion like hers is one of the reasons God rejoices in partnering with people to see the fulfillment of His own dream: to bring the lost of Myanmar to Himself!

HELPING HANDS

Love Doesn’t Need a Translator BY CHELI LOUCKS

I

t was dusk on the 4th of July when we pulled into Des Moines, Iowa. I opened the sunroof to get a better view of the fireworks that were lighting up the city as we searched for the rest of our youth group. Our mission trip was starting out with a bang! We found the house where we were staying, divvied up the beds and settled down, anticipating what the next few days would hold for us.

Less than two months before, Lisa Isensee, ASAP Ambassador Director, had asked our Madison, Wisconsin, youth group to provide kids’ programming for the Mizo Youth Federation. The meetings, led by Pastor Puia Fanai through ASAP Ministries,

were designed not only for the Mizo people but also for local churches who wanted to help in refugee ministry. To my delight, the youth group was excited to go and after a whirlwind of planning, full church funding, and excellent parental support, we were here! We sat in on the main meeting the first night, waiting to be introduced to the group. At first the language difference was unique and exciting, but soon the youth experienced frustration at wanting to know what was being said and wanting to be a part of the laughing and singing and applause. They gained a new perspective on what it feels like to not be able to understand what’s going on around you when you desperately want to be a part of it. With that understanding they worked hard to create ways to connect to the group the three or four younger Mizo children who knew no English. We had no translator to help us overcome the language barrier, so we prayed, changed our tactics, and focused the programming around hands-on, active fun. What’s more fun than the Fruit of the Spirit? Rayne made fruity snow cones for snacks. Heidi used her artistic talent to do face painting. Hannah organized Fruit Loop fun. Katherine always had a gaggle of little girls around her. Isaiah sweated it out with the older kids playing Capture the Fruit. Christopher used bubble strings to delight kids with huge, iridescent bubbles. Chenna cuddled every baby within a five-block radius. Dani faithfully carried around Christina, a handicapped five-year-old sweetheart, so she could be included in everything! We sang, laughed, played, ate, colored, and hugged our way through the week. Too soon the meetings were over and we were packing up to leave. All of us were a bit reflective as our mission trip came to an end. We discovered that days full of selfless, loving activity leave you exhausted but satisfied, that pumpkin leaf soup is an acquired taste, and last but not least that love doesn’t need a translator!

REACH THE WORLD NEXT DOOR

they will receive ongoing support and gain hands-on experience in cross-cultural ministry by joining us in our health expos and health coaching, our reconstruction work among the Cambodians, or our new Adventurer club family ministry in the apartment complexes. This will build their confidence to befriend and share wherever they go. One of the most exciting stories of the new school year is already unfolding at Iglesia Adventista de Bellaire. Last year, our students and staff shared testimonies and provided a training program at this Spanish-speaking church. This year, their pastor, Edgar Chavez, asked if RWND could come closer and guide them in their outreach efforts. That very week Pastor Bernabe Diaz and his family joined RWND.

The Diaz Family has joined the Reach the World Next Door team.

New Year, New Directions BY SCOTT GRISWOLD

M

any of you have closely followed the beginnings of the Reach the World Next Door (RWND) crosscultural missionary training program. Your prayers and finances are making a huge difference, and recently, God has led us in some exciting new directions. First, new staff member Pastor Bernabe Diaz, his wife Marleny and their children, Emilio, Benjamin, and Jade, have arrived on campus. With their backgrounds in farming, construction, and Bible work, the Diaz family is an excellent fit to help us train missionaries. Under Pastor Bernabe’s direction, RWND’s garden is being transformed. A new initiative called “Day at the Farm” encourages Houston-area church members to bring their nonChristian refugee and immigrant neighbors to enjoy a retreat from the city and learn about planting, healthy cooking, and natural remedies. In addition, we are focusing this second school year on training 100 local church members for cross-cultural outreach. Previously, it had seemed that they were too busy to be involved much, but their interest has steadily grown. Many of them work with immigrants or study alongside international students, and some meet refugees while shopping at the supermarket or elsewhere during their daily routines.

8

Since work and studies prevent these church members from attending our training program full-time, we are conducting a series of weekend intensive events to train them. In addition,

As we arrived for Sabbath School at Bellaire the parking lot was already filling up. The pastor approached. “What our mission leaders really want is to locate an apartment complex where we can systematically reach out to the residents. We are willing for it to be a mixture of Hispanics and other nationalities.” That afternoon, more than twenty members joined the first outreach effort. We studied from Acts 16 how God had shut two doors and opened a different one to Macedonia. We prayed that He would do the same for us and then drove to several apartment complexes. Sometimes we walked down the sidewalks praying individually. Sometimes we prayed as a group. The Diaz family quickly made friends. Being from Mexico and El Salvador, they had no language barrier like some of us. When we returned we asked the members if God had impressed them to focus their efforts in any certain area. One said, “I’m sure it is Ashford Apartments.” Another added, “Yes, that’s the one I thought of, too.” A third affirmed the same. With a mosque right next to the complex, it was clear that God was leading the Bellaire church into a whole new ministry. God has a beautiful plan for all the nations living in Houston. It seems very apparent that His plan this year is to build a solid base of church members who will reach out. Next year, oncampus students at Reach the World Next Door will have the privilege of working alongside a maturing ministry to the leastreached!

 Jesus Understands is a beautifully illustrated book with a powerful message for children. Written by Pastor Scott Griswold, it tells the story of Jesus and how He had lonely, sad, and hard times just like many children do today. We believe God has a special plan for this book, because the devil has opposed it at every turn. After two years in the making, we praise God that it is finally finished! Give the children in your life a gift with eternal value – introduce them to the Friend who understands and loves them no matter what! MEET OUR WORKERS

In Spite of Challenges BY BRENDA KIŠ

W

annasee was tired. As she drifted off to sleep in a field, suddenly an evil spirit took hold of her. When she awoke, she didn’t recognize the people around her and began acting strangely. Her sister quickly ran to find Rachel Herjer,* an ASAP church planter, to inform her of Wannasee’s odd behavior. A ghost, she said, had possessed her sister!

This is just one example of Rachel’s experiences as a church planter in Laos. This 26-year-old single woman is the eldest of six children living at home with a believing mother and an atheist, alcoholic father. In October 2015, she began serving an impoverished village of about 250 households. She donates clothing and invites kids to come to her house so she can teach them to write, read the Bible, and pray. On one occasion she invited a student to stay with her for a couple months because the girl’s parents threatened to kill her for believing in God.

Rachel acted quickly. Assembling the members of the small house church, she led the way to Wannasee’s house. And just in time! Wannasee was pouring oil on her house and car and was about to set them on fire! As soon as she saw Rachel, the evil spirit in her recognized God’s servant and caused Wannasee to be fearful of the church planter. “Don’t say anything to me,” the spirit begged through Wannasee’s lips. ”Your words hurt me when you talk about Jesus.” Rachel ignored the request and began to pray, encouraging Wannasee to repeat after her. Fifteen minutes later, the spirit departed and Wannasee came to herself. Full of joy, she praised and thanked the Lord for His deliverance.

In spite of constant ridicule by the villagers, Rachel has brought nine people to baptism. Another three are taking baptismal studies. Please remember Rachel in your prayers!
