T
ake a moment to reflect on the complex act of giving. What motivates you to give? To be honest, at times I have secretly wondered, “What’s in it for me?” or “Is that beggar by the road REALLY going to use the money for food as he says?” or “Where can I donate and get the most bang for my buck?” I encourage you to research the old 19th century term “disinterested benevolence,” often used by Charles Finney and other reformers of that time. In short, it means a charitable act free of bias or self-interest. Ellen White writes, “I point you to the life of Jesus as a perfect pattern. His life was characterized by disinterested benevolence” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 218). Jesus suffered and died on the cross. He gave His life for us simply because it was His Father’s will. He urges you and me to give in the same manner—no strings attached. As you study this gift catalog, may you respond as Jesus would. Simply give! “Let us thank God for His priceless Gift!” 2 corinthians 9:15 gnt
ON THE COVER: This boy from Cambodia faithfully attends church with his mother, Mrs. Kong. He was happy about his newly adopted puppy, but was even more excited when given a copy of My Bible First lessons for the very first time (see GIFT #509).

God is Able
BY SAM NGALA
I
n the winter of 2010, I resolved to reach out to thousands of refugees from Myanmar and Southeast Asia that need to know Jesus. I prayed a lot about this and starting from 2011, while in my third year as a full-time seminary student at Andrews University, I decided to dedicate each weekend to working with the refugees and immigrants in Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as in other states. I stepped out in faith since I did not have a car of my own for the seven hour round-trip. God did not fail me. Within one year, twenty-eight individuals joined the Southside SDA Church through a profession of faith. At the moment, I am giving Bible studies to youth and adults, some of whom have never heard of the gospel of Christ. I trust as I continue to move forward I will see God continue to provide.
“But truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. Numbers 14:21

Daring Distribution BY LAY PASTOR TRONG HUU*
T
hirteen evangelists from our church and I went to pass out Pastor Isah Young’s sermon DVDs. We prayed over the 2,000 DVDs, committing our outreach efforts to God. We went about sharing DVDs in the market until police officers on mopeds rounded us up. They brought us to the police station and interrogated us with questions like, “Are there anti-government messages on the DVDs?” I told them to watch the DVDs to see for themselves, which they did. All the while we were praying silently. Finally at 3 p.m., after seven hours, they released all of us. We realize that this experience hindered our outreach that day, but it strengthened our faith. We praise God that they did not fine us for illegally distributing literature. They confiscated only four DVDs. To my surprise, one officer called my phone and said, “Pastor Isah Young is a really good speaker!” “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven ...” Matthew 6:20

Perfect in Weakness
BY LITERACY TEACHER CHENDA NETH FROM CAMBODIA
“W
ill you pray about becoming a literacy teacher?” Church Planter Thearith asked. I was stunned by his question. “Why me?” I thought. I had barely said a word in church because I was so shy. “How could I ever stand in front of children and teach?” I wondered. After praying, the Lord clearly showed me it was His plan for me to teach. I started out with five children on the porch of my parent’s home. This number quickly grew as children told their friends and I made home visits. The children enjoyed hearing the Bible stories and liked to sing; however, one by one, they stopped coming to class. Finally I was down to two students. Discouraged, I went to Church Planter Tearith to resign, but he would not let me. He reminded me that, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. He said, “We need to pray!” After much prayer, the students started coming back to class. So many new students came we had to build a literacy center. Now my sister, Chandu, and four assistants help me teach six classes a day with a total of 208 students. “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” Isaiah 54:13

Buffalo Blessings BY NHEN SAO
I
am so thankful for the water buffalos that were given to me. One day my water buffalos became sick and I didn’t have money to buy medicine to give them injections. My first thought was to call the shaman and have him perform a ceremony for them. I went to my relatives to ask for a loan so I could pay for this. They didn’t help me. I had nowhere to turn. Suddenly, the words of a song I learned in church came into my mind. “If you have any problems, you can pray to God. He will help you.” Christianity was very new to me, but I thought I would try it. “Oh God, if you are true and real, please heal my buffalos.” After an hour, I saw my two buffaloes eyes open but they were still lying on their sides with their hooves in the air. I was afraid so I knelt down and prayed again. Then something amazing happened! My buffalos got right up and started eating some dry hay. I knew that was a sign that God was answering my prayers. I shouted with joy and called my relatives and told them, “My buffalos are healed!” That day I saw that God is real. It was the beginning of my walk with Jesus.
“He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given.” Proverbs 19:17
