National Classic Recap By Rachel Dickson Eastern Trustee

As we reflect on the most unexpected and unusual summer, the highlight for me and for many of you reading this was the 2020 AJSA National Classic in Brookings, South Dakota. I think this year more than ever, we were all so grateful to be able to come together during such uncertain times and bond over our love for Simmental cattle while giving our members a chance to showcase their cattle they have been working all year on. While we had to make some changes, it was a smashing success in our book. This year, we shortened the schedule and postponed the public speaking competition to comply with COVID-19 restrictions along with postponing our mentorship program. Even with these changes though, we felt as if this National Classic was one of the best yet. Everyone who has ever attended an AJSA National Classic knows how difficult and time consuming the planning and preparation may be. With that being said, that didn’t stop our ASA Director of Youth Activities, Darla Aegerter, from getting the job extraordinarily done. Along with the help of Chance Ujazdowski, the South Dakota Junior Simmental Association, The Swiftel Center, and the ASA Board, Darla was able to change the location of the National Classic to South Dakota and allow our AJSA members to show in the midst of a pandemic when the odds were stacked against her. From all of us on the AJSA Board of Trustees, thank you Darla for your constant hard work and dedication and leading us in a direction never before seen in the Simmental breed. We hope all of you enjoyed your summer and we were so happy to see so many of you in Brookings. We are excited to see you this fall at our PTP Majors and we are excited for this upcoming year to see where the summer takes us!

2021 National Classic

“Funded in part by the American Simmental-Simbrah Foundation”

President’s Update Cara Smith, AJSA President Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing well and staying safe. To say this year continues to be a challenge for all of us is an understatement. Whether you are fortunate to be attending school in person or you are virtual, my sincere hope is that we are all able to keep focused on doing our best and continuing to learn and improve ourselves. I am so grateful we were able to hold the National Classic this summer. That week provided much needed normalcy and the privilege of making memories. As a Board we continue to push forward while maintaining our focus on upcoming events. We are planning to get together later this month where we will be further discussing the 2021 Regionals and the National Classic as well as reviewing the rules and brainstorming new ideas. Keep an eye out for up-to-date information on the AJSA Instagram and Facebook pages. Don’t forget to check out our AJSA apparel line with a few new additions this fall! This season of the year tends to be a time of reflection of our lives; 2020 had a lot to teach us and honestly there were a lot of hard lessons. But one lesson I learned is there is always something for which to be thankful. Look for the good and be the good that you want to find. Also, best of luck to everyone showing this fall and I look forward to seeing y’all at NAILE and FWSS. As always if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any other AJSA Trustee. The AJSA Board of Trustees hopes everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
