Deer Creek Farms Fall Production Sale 2016 by American Simmental Publication, Inc

WELCOME! To our third annual sale and open house. Our goal is to raise production oriented cattle that will work for commercial cattlemen and the beef industry. The cow herd rotationally grazes fescue pastures and receives hay during the winter. We run our cows on grass as much as possible. Cattle from Deer Creek Farm are adapted to fescue and the hot and humid southeast climate. We do feed grain to the growing bulls and heifers to develop to their full genetic potential. The bull offering this year includes several that offer calving ease and high growth. These high All Purpose Index (API) bulls can be used in many breeding systems and will suit cattlemen very well that use the same bull to breed heifers and cows. The bulls that we offer have as much data with them as any that you will find anywhere else in the country. Deer Creek Farm has attained “ASA Performance Advocate” status for several years. We have collected data from birth through yearling phase. In addition to weights, we measure and collect ultrasound carcass data, frame scores, and have genomic enhanced EPDs. A supplement sheet on the bulls with yearling weights, frame scores, and ultrasound data will be available upon request and on sale day since we were not able to get that included in the sale catalog before the deadline. All of the yearling bulls were DNA tested for color and Genomic enhanced EPDs. The color status is listed in the catalog, and the DNA for other traits is already included in the bulls’ EPDs. Please read the article in this catalog titled “Benefits of Genomically Enhanced EPDs”. This gives more accuracy to the EPDs, equivalent of having on average 6-8 calves on the ground, and helps you by giving more predictability on what the calves will be. The heifers that are in the sale are all ones that we would keep for our own replacements and any that don’t sell will certainly go back into the herd. The heifers are herd building type cows. They will be efficient converters of grass to beef and will be good producing cows for their new owners. All of the yearling heifers were DNA tested for color and is so listed in the catalog. We did not DNA test the spring 2016 heifers. While we don’t breed for the show ring, there are a couple of the spring born heifers that will make nice junior projects. Our neighbors, Thompson Farm, joined us this year in consigning three heifers that were sired by one of our bulls. I hope that you will be able to join us for the sale. All sale lots will have videos that will be linked to our website and should be available for you to view one week prior to the sale.

Trucking

Each lot is listed with a minimum starting bid price, which is located in the cell block labeled “Min”. Cattle will auctioned off in numerical order as listed in the sale catalog. Cattle will be sold to the highest bidder. Should an animal not receive a bid, they may be available after the sale at the minimum starting bid. Buyers have the option of bidding in person, by phone, or online.

Directions The GPS address is 3466 Lowesville Rd, Roseland, VA. The farm is 45 minutes south of Charlottesville and 35 minutes north of Lynchburg approximately 7 miles off of Rt. 29. We are 1 hour from Staunton, 2 hours from Blacksburg, and 2 hours from Richmond.

Insurance Should you wish to purchase insurance on your cattle purchases, please call Jensen Livestock Agency at 785-262-1116.

Health and management All cattle were vaccinated with modified live vaccines against respiratory and reproductive diseases. Cattle were also dewormed. Bulls of breeding age had a breeding soundness exam, and results will be available sale day.

Supplemental Bull Data The bulls came of test and were ultrasounded on October 11, and we didn’t have enough time to get the additional data in the catalog. A supplement sheet with data on yearling weights, gain, frame score, and ultrasound carcass measurements will be available in late October upon request and on sale day.

If you need to add more muscle to your calves, C25 will do it. He is expressively muscled and ranks in the tops 10% of the breed for ribeye area. I would suggest that you keep replacement heifers from this bull because his mother is a big bodied cow that is low maintenance and has a picture perfect udder. I recommend using him on mature cows due to calving ease EPD but should be no problem with mature cows. He would cross well with some commercial Angus cows and make some great SimAngus calves.

In my opinion, this is one of the best bulls of the group. He combines calving ease with significant growth. He provides a 110 lb. EPD spread from birth to yearling. His EPDs, which are Genomic Enhanced, place him in the top 15% for calving ease, top 25 % for weaning, top 10% for yearling, top 25% for milk, top 15% for marbling and ribeye and top 10% for API and TI. Typical of the Aftershock calves, he is longer than most bulls with a touch more frame. I hear from commercial cow calf producers all the time that they want to put more frame in their calves. This bull will do it without sacrificing calving ease. Cavalier is truly a bull that rings all the bells. He is good all around, whether you sell calves at weaning, retain ownership, or want to breed him to heifers; you can't go wrong with this bull.

Charger is one of the younger bulls in the offering, but he sure is stout. He is muscular and carries it on a nice long stride. He could definitely be used on heifers since he ranks in the top 40% for calving ease and his dam carries lots of calving ease genetics. He had a 70 lb. birth weight and then went on to wean at 658 lbs.

Country Boy has some really nice cow families in his pedigree. His dam was a show heifer for Hayden, and she has developed into a beautiful cow with huge capacity and a nice supported udder with small teats. His paternal granddam is the 4545P cow that has produced outstanding herd sires and productive females. Being in the top 15% of the breed for weaning and yearling weight, you can rest assured that you will increase your weaning weights and have heavier calves too if you background them. You will get black calves if breeding him to Angus cows. Think of the heterosis benefits that you will get.

1. How does DNA testing (GGP-HD or GGP-LD) improve predictions of EPDs? There are thousands of DNA markers associated with genetic potential of the traits we evaluate with EPDs. The combination of these SNPs explains (in part) the genetic potential an animal has for a trait. In short, DNA testing provides additional information that is blending with the calculated EPDs resulting in higher accuracy genetic prediction in relatively unproven (low accuracy) animals. Adding DNA information increases the accuracy of the EPDs similar to an average of 8 progeny measurements and the impact on the accuracy depends on the trait (stayability is the highest while back fat is the lowest; see Table 1). 2. How do I best use the information from DNA testing? Thankfully, the information is easy to use. If you know how to use EPDs then you can use GE-EPDs – they work the exact same way. In order to take advantage of the DNA information (LD or HD), you need to use this information in your selection decisions.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available

for co mparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their p rogeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving fro m -5 to +10 y ields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent mo re unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank h im relat ive to other bulls in the breed. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Average Daily Gai n (ADG): Pounds of postweaning daily weight gain. Back Fat (B F): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Cal vi ng Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring achiev ing a docile (1) score. Maternal Cal ving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important

traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical co mputation, $ indexes blend EPDs and e conomics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (b red to both Angus first -calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remain ing heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine wh ich index to use; if you’re keep ing replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth co mpared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull co mpared to another. For examp le, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an ext ra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 d iff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the population. Important disclaimer : DO NOT co mpare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.
