DIXSON FARMS 2020 PRIVATE TREATY BULL SALE Welcome to our 2020 Open House and Limited Auction. Every year in the cattle business is a challenge, but this year we have seen our fair share. After the tough winter that most reading this experienced right along with us, Mother Nature wasn’t through with us when it came grass time. Wind storms, floods, and wildfires left all of us involved in this sale scrambling to replace fences among other things and forced us to do a few things differently this year. In spite of all of that, we have managed to pull together as good a set of bulls as we have had in a while. In our home herd, we continue to focus our efforts on identifying and multiplying superior adaptable maternal Simmental genetics that can be successful in low to medium input herds. In our view, that means moderate mature size, moderate milk, exceptional udder structure, good disposition, sound feet and legs. We expect good fleshing ability and fertility on low to medium inputs. By stacking generations of tough range tested cows, we have built a core of deep DX pedigrees that are doing the things that we ask of them. We do continue to invest in genetics from outside sources as well. After a lot of years of using only herdbulls that were raised in our program, we went out in search of a couple of junior herdsires last year that we are really excited about. Pictured below are Future and Firebird. Look for their data at the end of the catalog and for them to be on display on sale day. The second area where we choose to focus is for those who want top end growth and carcass trait black SimAngus bulls. This is where our cooperators come in. Mike and Sohn Domsch and Tim Rippe have brought us an outstanding set of high growth bulls again this year. These are all homozygous polled and most are homozygous black. They are bred to add pounds to any calf crop. We look forward to sharing this bull offering with you on Feb. 15th. If you can’t be with us that day, give us a call and come and take a look. As always, we offer free board until April 1st and fully guarantee the bulls. If you have any questions, give us a call for more information on these bulls or our program and we hope to see you on or before the 15th. Dixson Farms Inc. Carol Dixson

SALE FORMAT: This year our private treaty sale begins on February 15th. There will be bid sheets posted for each lot on that day. We will proceed with a simple silent auction format. The minimum bid for each lot will be available in the sale supplement a few days before the sale, and the minimum bid increment will be $250. At 1:30, we will begin closing bids with a live bid off. The bulls that are left after that time will be available first come, first serve at the base price unless otherwise noted.

DIRECTIONS

From Atwood: 5 mi. west, 2 mi. south, and follow the Beaver Creek Road west and south for 5 mi.

From McDonald: 13 mi. east, 2 mi. south, and follow the Beaver Creek Road west and south for 5 miles

CLOSEOUT ORDER: This year, we will not set the closeout order until just before we close. We will close in the order of the high current bids on the silent auction. If the closing order is important to you, place a bid on your first choice during the silent auction to help set the closeout order.

SEMEN CHECK: All bulls sell guaranteed to pass a Breeding Soundness Evaluation, but it has not been performed yet. Bulls will be tested in mid to late March to get past the coldest weather and closer to breeding season for most people. If you buy a bull and need to have him checked sooner than that for an earlier pick up, notify us at check out and let Lyle know.

SALE TERMS: Full payment is due the day of sale. Make checks payable to Dixson Farms, Inc.

BULL CARE: All bulls will have free board until April 1st. We can keep the yearling bulls from April 1st to May 15th for $1.50 per day and the 2 year olds for $2.00. After May 15th, board will increase to $3 and $4 respectively.

SUPPLEMENT SHEET: A supplement sheet will be available with current weights, scrotals, updated EPDs, and base price about a week before the sale.

SEMEN INTEREST: The buyer will receive full possession, full salvage value and 100% semen interest on all bulls sold unless otherwise noted or announced. If a bull is collected, Dixson Farms and our cooperators reserve the opportunity to a one time 30 unit package for in herd use only at cost of production.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: All bulls sell under the terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association.

STORM DATE: In case of EXTREME weather, the sale will be moved to February 22.

DELIVERY: Economical delivery can be arranged by talking to Lyle.

GUARANTEE: All our bulls are 100% guaranteed for the first year. This means if there are any disposition, soundness, calving, or color problems, we will take the bull back and replace him or assist you in finding a replacement. The LAST thing we want to do is sell and perpetuate problem cattle. This is NOT mortality insurance. Once they leave our place, they are your bulls. All sight unseen purchases are guaranteed to be as represented.

Will They Grow and Grade? A couple of years ago, Braxton was involved in the Steer Profitability Competition through the Junior Simmental Association. It is a great program where he learned a lot about the way that the feedlot and packing industry works and a rare opportunity to get individual feed efficiency and carcass data. He sent 3 random steers from the group that weren’t growthy enough to make our bull pen. The results from these steers were striking. For the entire feeding period, these steers gained 4.5 lbs/day and did it with an astonishing 4.64 feed to gain ratio which was almost a full pound better than the pen average. At harvest there were 2 steers that graded choice YG 2 and the 3rd (a Simford) went CAB. These 3 steers beat the pen average for profitability by $92/head. Not bad for some below average growth steers from an operation whose emphasis is on maternal traits. The dams of these steers averaged a little over 1200 lbs. If we can get this kind of performance from these moderate sized cows, we believe that we are on the right track. The average yearling weight EPD of these steers was 79 and the average marbling EPD was 0.1. Compare those numbers to this year’s sale offering and you will see why we are confident that our maternally focused cattle will still grow and grade.

Our Low Input 2 Year Old Program

To those of you who are new to our program, some of these 2 year olds may require an explanation. The May and June born bulls were born at that time by design. We handle this set of cows completely separate from the early spring calving cows as a true low input herd. After years of selection pressure on strictly winter grass, we have found the type and bloodlines that work in this program and have now moved to a winter stalk program freeing up more summer grass. Rather than push these bulls to maximize growth, we grow them slow and kick them out on grass all summer. We didn’t pull them into the lot until the end of November. All bulls are virgin unless otherwise noted.

Hetero Black Homozygous Polled. We selected Future from the Bridle Bit sale last spring. He has the combination of CE, maternal traits and marbling that we look for in a heifer bull. We are really excited to see calves this spring and especially red calves from his deep black pedigree. Pictured inside the front cover, for reference only.

QUICK GUIDE TO ASA EPDs AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
