SURVIVE TO THRIVE. When ASA first opened its doors in 1987, it was in response to an epidemic we did not fully understand compounded by stigma and fear. We held the hands of our friends and neighbors as they passed away, and propped up others hoping they would survive long enough for a cure to arrive.
But our work is not over. As the landscape of HIV changes, new challenges emerge, and current resources strain to keep pace with the demand for HIV services. For 30 years the community has invested in the programs and services of ASA to ensure clients can access and maintain medical care and to help promote proven prevention strategies to curb the rate of new infections. Your support has gone to work providing dental care, housing assistance, food and nutrition, emergency services, outreach and prevention, and linkage to care. And now, we are thrilled to announce the integration of medical care to meet the growing demand for access to care.

As ASA marks its 30th anniversary, we cannot help but reflect on how far we’ve come since those first days. While a cure has yet to arrive, meaningful and viable treatment options have emerged along with powerful new prevention tools. As an organization, we have transitioned from reactive to proactive services, implemented innovative programs, paved the way for expanded HIV testing, and worked with our community to fight stigma and indifference.
We remain committed to building healthier lives, free from stigma, for people affected by HIV. As we layout our blueprint for the future, we will continue to build on our past Paul E. CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES In 2016, we assisted 236 clients in our Case Management Program. 88% of our clients in Medical Case Management are virally suppressed, which is a 5% increase over 2015. Viral suppression means HIV is virtually untransmittable! Case Management is a service which seeks to provide clients with the knowledge and resources to improve and maintain their medical care and basic living needs. NON-MEDICAL CASE MANAGEMENT The Non-Medical Case Management team works with clients who have social service needs. Non-Medical Case Managers help clients focus on specific life challenges. This may include tackling issues like food insecurity or nutritional challenges, housing, transportation, legal matters, budgeting, family concerns, or cultural barriers. MEDICAL CASE MANAGEMENT Medical Case Management is designed to serve persons living with HIV who have multiple complex health-related needs. Our team assists clients with medication adherence, health literacy, prescription management, and the scheduling and accompaniment to doctors’ appointments. We also assist clients with medicine interaction and managing their co-morbidities.

HOUSING ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS In 2016, we assisted our clients with more than $735,000 in housing related expenses. Our Housing Case Managers often explain our four Housing Assistance Programs by describing different parts of a house. HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERSONS WITH AIDS (HOPWA) Think of HOPWA as a first floor helping someone out of homelessness: Short-Term Support of Housing (STSH) pays for someone who is homeless to move to transitional housing (~60 days). STSH is a pathway to housing. Permanent Housing Placement Services (PHPS) pays first month’s rent for clients so they can afford to pay deposits. PHPS is a doorway into housing. Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) pays monthly rent and utilities.
PAUL KIRBY FUND Our Paul Kirby Fund is reserved for clients having documented emergencies and no other funding options.
Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility Assistance (STRMU) pays for rent, utilities, or mortgage payments. This is for clients in permanent housing, but at risk of losing it. This funding source helps them stay housed. BEST SINGLE SOURCE PLUS (BSS+)
The Plus One $735,000+ Program helps clients unable to pay bills. PLUS ONE keeps water and power on.
BSS+ helps clients establish predictable, affordable, sustainable, and safe housing. BSS+ is for those living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
