Inspiring change is a tough job, especially when it comes to the environment. But WEforum, a Women’s Education Forum, has taken on the challenge in a big way. In April 2016, their inaugural WEforum Health & Wellness Conference raised $250,000 to support free health and wellness services offered by Monmouth Medical Center, a RWJ Barnabas Health affiliate. Before their next conference in November 2017, there will be a series of fundraisers beginning with the WE GO GREEN “Hydrate for Life” fundraising campaign. In partnership with local businesses, WEforum is offering environmentally sound reusable WE GO GREEN water bottles for sale. For every bottle sold, WEforum will donate a free bottle to local community health and wellness education programs for children and adults including: Monmouth Medical Center’s Cancer Support Community, Horizons, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. Carolyn DeSena, Founder of WEforum, hopes the WE GO GREEN campaign will inspire greater changes in every community. 8

greenLIFENJ

“Our mission is to strengthen the health and wellness of our communities,” DeSena says. “Environmental health impacts our physical health. This is something that should drive leaders in our communities to make the changes necessary to improve both.” Each bottle will contain a bi-lingual “message in a bottle” in English and Spanish explaining the WE GO GREEN mission. Amy McDonagh, WEforum’s Director of Strategic Development, explains the goal “is to work with retail and community partners to raise awareness about two issues: the environmental impact of disposable water bottles and the importance of replacing sugary drinks with water. The ‘Buy One = Give One’ model of the WE GO GREEN campaign educates and empowers as many families as possible about these two critical environmental and health issues. By spreading this message to everyone, we will evolve the health of our communities.” Look for WEforum’s custom WE GO GREEN stainless steel water bottles for sale. Visit WEforum’s website www.WEforumGroup.org or email info@WEforumGroup.org for information on where to buy a WE Go Green bottle and help promote environmental and health messages in your community.

G

reen living does not only pertain to protecting natural resources of the environment, but also to support the growth of people striving to improve our social climate. In the case of the Ansell Grimm & Aaron law firm (“AGA”), being green means supporting over 150 charities throughout New Jersey and beyond, such as American Heart Association, March of Dimes, Athlete Ally, Preferred Behavioral Health Group, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County, to name a few. In fact, AGA was named the 2016 Clara Barton Corporate Humanitarian of the Year by The Jersey Coast

Chapter of the American Red Cross and was awarded the Greater Ocean Township Chamber of Commerce 2016 Philanthropy Award. AGA attorneys represent clients throughout the tristate area via offices in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. “We were so honored and humbled to receive these awards,” says Michael V. Benedetto, managing partner of the firm. “AGA enjoys supporting the community and partnering with many organizations

that benefit people throughout the state of New Jersey and beyond.” Benedetto, the Chair of the Firm’s Commercial Real Estate Department and Commercial, Finance & Banking Department since 2009, has served on numerous charitable advisory boards. In addition, AGA has green practices when it comes to reduction of paper. Frederick C. Raffetto, partner and co-Chair of the Real Property Tax Appeals Department, who has been with AGA for approximately 18 years, and has served as the Municipal Attorney for the City of Asbury Park for 13 of those years, states that, “the firm takes advantage of technology to cut down on paper. Lawyers are stereotypically known for using a lot of paper. At AGA, however, we pride ourselves on keeping up to date with all of the most recent technological advances so that the firm reduces our paper usage as much as possible.” AGA recently transitioned to using eCourts via the New Jersey Judiciary to file legal pleadings including general equity, tax and special civil part pleadings. “The firm also has a robust document management system which enables attorneys in different offices to share files without reprinting documents,” reports Raffetto. AGA also offers a unique internet-based tool called “OCATS” which is offered to our community association clients at no additional charge. This online tool provides access to account status, monthly reports, tracking services and instant messaging to our clients 24/7/365.

Mr. Raffetto, who is also a runner, ran the New York City Marathon in 2015 to celebrate a milestone birthday. Raffetto used the race to raise money for “Team for Kids,” a 501(c)(3) charity, which is part of the New York Road Runners’ Youth and Community Services program, which provides free or low-cost health and fitness programs to kids who would otherwise have little or no access to regular physical activity. Besides being a good corporate citizen, AGA can assist with almost every legal need. Benedetto concludes that, “the firm boasts over 40 attorneys including two retired Superior Court Judges and leaders of Bar Associations and Foundations throughout the state, who practice in a multitude of legal practice areas including litigation, real estate, matrimonial law, criminal law, personal injury, land use and zoning, municipal law, condominium association law, bankruptcy, real property tax appeals, and wills, trusts and estate law.” For more information on AGA or its green practices, contact Michael V. Benedetto, Esq. at 732-643-5216 or via email at mvb@ansellgrimm.com.

Circle BMW...

THE 4TH GENERATION Thomas DeFelice III 26

greenLIFENJ

BMW lovers, take notice. Shopping for a car is a family affair at Circle BMW, now run by the fourth generation of the DeFelice family.

B

ayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Work), headquartered in Germany and founded in 1916, is still one of the most respected and best-selling luxury brands in automotive history. It began making aircraft engines and now also manufactures motorcycles, the Mini and Rolls-Royce. Circle BMW’s foray into the business began when Thomas Carmine DeFelice, Tom DeFelice’s grandfather, founded Circle Chevrolet in Freehold in 1946. Then Tom’s father, Thomas John DeFelice, Sr., and his Uncle Edward took the reins and moved the business first to Red Bank, then Shrewsbury. In 1981, Tom founded Circle BMW. Today, Tom is joined by his son Thomas DeFelice III, who graduated Seton Hall Law School in 2012 and practiced law for about three years after passing the Bar Exam. gLNJ: Would you say the auto industry is the family’s passion? TD III: Yes. I grew up around cars my whole life, and around my father and uncles, who were all involved in the car business. So it’s ingrained in the way I think and see the world. I am now the fourth generation involved in the car business. My great grandfather started Circle Chevrolet in 1946, and here I am helping to run our BMW store 70 years later. gLNJ: Are cars your passion as well? TD III: I certainly love cars – there are few products that are better examples of human ingenuity in engineering and design, and no

other product provides the individual freedom of movement like the car. Driving a car is an exhilarating experience, and I believe in the romance of the automobile and its importance to American history. But my true passion is business and the people in business – employees and customers. Helping both achieve their particular goals is what drives me. gLNJ: What did you do before law school? TD III: I grew up working in the store in Shrewsbury starting from when I was a young teenager. I have experience in nearly every job that exists in the dealership. After nearly 10 years of working there off and on, I wanted to see what else was out there for me. That’s when I decided to attend law school. gLNJ: What chain of events led to your joining Circle BMW? TD III: There are many synergies between law and business that I take advantage of daily. The education and opportunity to develop skills in a different industry was invaluable. Still, the prospect of running the family business pulled at me. I’ve always felt a deep, personal connection to the store and our employees, and I couldn’t ignore that call any longer. I’ve been back here full time since August 2015. gLNJ: Why BMW? TD III: My father was attracted to the brand in its infancy in the American market in the mid-to-late 1970s. He wisely saw the potential and jumped on an opportunity to acquire a franchise in 1981. We’ve been with BMW ever since and value our partnership a great deal. BMW and its dealers have done great things together in the U.S. and that remains to be true today. It’s just a superb product at the cutting edge of automotive performance and technology. We’ve been able to build a dealership that provides excellent customer service throughout the ownership cycle, matching the expectation customers have when they purchase a BMW from us. I expect this symbiosis to continue and that I’ll be a BMW dealer for quite a long time.

ROARING BROOK LOG HOMES

F

ounder Lou Lifrieri, a retired aerospace industry executive, is fueled by self-reliance, renewable and sustainable energy. “I’ve always had a passion for building and how things were put together,” he relates. “I marveled at feats of great civil and structural engineering while growing up. When renewable energy became mainstream, I knew it was my destiny.” The founder of Roaring Brook Log Homes had designed and built homes before, but his masterful researching skills helped find a sustainable energy system for his family’s 2,800 square-foot log cabin vacation home in the Pocono Mountains in Roaring Brook Township, PA. “I had researched renewable solar energy for three years, including wind technology and solar thermal,” Lifrieri said. “This is a cabin in the middle of the Poconos, so I had to determine how to live completely off-grid.” A Roaring Brook Log Home offers the freedom of self-reliance that comes with renewable sun and wind energy without sacrificing the perks of modern technology and innovation. He opines, “With today’s world in such turmoil, I believe we need to rely upon ourselves for taking care of generations to come, and learn the skills of pioneering and pass them down before they are lost.” Why logs? “Because logs are rooted in our past and are the most beautiful material along with glass and stone,” Lifrieri explains. “Log home designs matched with renewable energy assures you selectable energy independence regardless of events. It’s about securing your loved ones with safe havens now and into the foreseeable future.” His latest custom design is a 4,350-squarefoot log cabin--a family retreat--perched high atop King Joe’s Mountain in the North Poconos with natural secluded access. “It was designed for our family to get together and enjoy the four season recreation of northeastern Pennsylvania. Watching the kids grow up, earn responsibility, and push their own boundaries in an outdoor environment is the best payoff in life!” he exclaims.

aryn Jarmer is the well-known owner of My Kitchen Witch, a popular breakfast and lunch cafe in Monmouth Beach. But ... Karyn also runs a successful catering company, is an accomplished triathlete, a Total Immersion Swimming Coach and a role model for many young women on the Jersey Shore. Jarmer’s signature taste began taking shape at age 15, when she learned about the restaurant business and good home cooking from a local restaurateur. Three years later, Jarmer was a manager at a busy South Street Seaport cafe, where her vision of the gustatory world expanded. Her keen observations and innate artistry soon led her to start her own catering business in Manhattan. My Kitchen Witch Catering now feeds the cast and crew of a myriad of television shows, indie films, musical concerts and fashion shows. Jarmer’s clients are household names like Stephen Colbert, Michael Kors, Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.” Locally, she recently catered the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club’s Wimbledon break- fast; and the restaurant can always be rented for a special event. Sports plays a major role in Jarmer’s life to relieve the stress and pressure of managing her businesses and to keep her in top-notch shape to run them. Since becoming a triathlete in 2012, Jarmer has competed in numerous events. On April 21, 2012, she participated in her first half marathon. On June 29, 2015, she participated in her first half ironman race.

Jarmer also recently received her 2.0 Certification as a Total Immersion Swimming Coach. On April 5, 2015, she completed a three-mile swim from Nevis to St. Kitts. Jarmer believes in providing opportunities for women who are just starting out. One local entrepreneur, Alex Mazzucca, co-owner of Seed to Sprout in Avon, began by running the Juice Bar at My Kitchen Witch and also held Thursday night vegan dinners at the restaurant. More recently, Jarmer has been mentoring Rose Levy Goldberg, by featuring Rose’s Turmeric Tea, which has become a big hit in the café. Jarmer’s can-do attitude serves as inspiration for everyone who works for her. She rarely says no to a customer. As a matter of fact, she became known as “the Witch” when she was catering The Rosie O’Donnell Show. One day, Madonna was a guest on the show and had stringent requirements. With very little prep time, Jarmer was able to satisfy her requests. So, O’Donnell named Jarmer, “the Witch.”

Andrea Phox November 3, 2016 will be bright, thanks to the talent and generosity of Andrea Phox, the awardwinning photographer and creator of SHINE, 100 Women of Long Branch, a photography show featuring all 100 women. Designed to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the Long Branch Library becoming free, SHINE opens November 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and will run through December 30th at the Long Branch Public Library. Phox, a Long Branch resident, was born and raised on the upper East Side of Manhattan and moved to Deal in fifth grade. “I wanted to give the SHINE women an opportunity to unite and also bring Long Branch closer as a community,” she explains. “I learned a lot through the process of photographing this amazing collection of women. One of the commonalities is how women don’t like having their pictures taken because they feel unattractive in one way or another. It speaks volumes about the pressures culturally imposed on women to stay young, beautiful, thin, good looking, sexy or just plain desirable.” “My intention was to show every one of them their beauty, to show them their light to shine, to unwrap the gift they are to the world, she continues.”

Phox is a 1980 graduate of the Minneapolis School of Art and Design, where she double majored in Sculpture and Painting, and minored in Film. She moved to New York to attend the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program while concentrating on her film career as a camera assistant on many major motion pictures. When she became a mother in 2001, she opened a photography studio and has been shooting ever since. In 2003, Phox became a Certified Professional Photographer and last year became a Platinum Medalist in the International Photographic Competition. This year she was named Master of Photography by the Professional Photographers of America. Don’t miss the cocktail reception at McLoone’s Pier House after the library celebration. What is Gluten-Free?

Back before the days of organic gluten-free pasta and breads, being diagnosed with celiac disease was especially painful. But times have changed, and now gluten-free products are everywhere. That fact has enabled eating a gluten-free diet to become a choice for many, instead of solely an ultimatum born of necessity. Q. What is gluten and is it really bad for you? A. Gluten is the protein found in various forms of wheat. As the name suggests, it’s similar to glue in the way it holds food together and gives it shape. The reason people with celiac disease avoid it is because it causes inflammation in the small intestines. If you don’t have celiac, gluten may not cause you the same kind of trouble, but you may still reach for the gluten-free products instead. Q. Why avoid gluten if I don’t have celiac disease? A. One reason is because wheat is a common allergen. That said, gluten sensitivity may be more wide-spread than we think, according to experts. Gluten has been linked to various issues related to digestion and bowel issues, abdominal pain, bloating and fatigue, as well as autoimmune diseases, brain disorders, and mental health conditions. Q. How can I avoid gluten? A. The easiest way to avoid it is to eat as many naturally gluten-free, unprocessed foods as possible, including: fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and seafood, dairy, beans, legumes, and nuts. Q. What grains can I eat to be sure I’m avoiding wheat? A. Plenty of grains are naturally gluten-free, meaning they do not contain wheat. These include: rice, soy, corn, tapioca, quinoa, millet, arrowroot, buckwheat (kasha), amaranth, chia, flax, and yucca.

Greeny’s

Lucky Charm

A

t age 11, celebrity fitness trainer Michael Greenblatt played on the Long Branch Elks Little League Baseball team coached by Rich Braun. During the last game of the play-offs, “Greeny” (his nickname since childhood) hit a double during the otherwise perfectly pitched game. Afterwards, Coach Braun suggested he lose weight if he wanted to hit the ball like that more often. In a matter of two and a half months, Greeny transformed himself through daily diet and exercise. Coach Braun didn’t recognize him 65 pounds lighter the following spring. And so began Greeny’s lifelong passion for health and fitness. “Coach Braun was my inspiration,” he shares. “We’re friends to this day.” Earning a psychology degree at Monmouth University in the early ‘80s, alongside being the school’s soccer star, Greeny went on to hold the “Mr. New Jersey” title from May 1992 to March 1994 and made 165 appearances. He taught fitness at the university’s new fitness center from its inception in 1993.

As the NJ Transit billboard model and an actor, A Beautiful Mind, training celebrities became his calling card through the years with household names like Susan Lucci and Rhea Perlman as clients. But entertainment wasn’t the only high-profile industry with which Greeny had natural resonance.

Maura Marrucca Maura Marrucca, daughter of Frank Maggio, founder of Frank's Deli, Main St, Asbury Park started her career in the family business at age 10. "That was in 1962," recalls Marruca," when cigarettes were 7 cents a pack, the Asbury Park Press was a nickel and a quart of milk was 32 cents."

them. We worked the cash register and had other responsibilities." she adds. Happily married for 45 years, Maura met her husband (son of the tomato and lettuce vendor) here and has three children and six grandchildren. "I got married at 21, took 20 years off to raise my family, and have been here again for twenty more years, right where I started," Maura states with a laugh. Elated to carry on the family legacy and a good source of income to pay off her family's college loans, what's the next best thing about her job? "The customers," she replies. Is Frank's Deli green? "We have the best pork roll and cheese sandwiches in the United States," she insists. "Green? We have many salads on the menu. Caesar is probably the best. In the summer we sell farm fresh Jersey tomatoes at the counter. Yes, we're green too, she adds."

"This was my father's store. My parents didn't have babysitters, so they brought us to work with

The FactorY on broadway At the turn of the 20th century, a factory on Broadway in West Long Branch was erected to house the "American Silk Mill." It prospered and served its community and occupants for decades. A century later in the late 1990s – with barely a pulse of a future – it laid in ruins. Meditirinia Properties and Klose Associates, West Long Branch, seized the opportunity to resurrect the structure and applied its unique resources to preserve, restore, repurpose and celebrate this century-old architecture. Seen as the perfect gateway for the Long Branch Broadway Redevelopment Project, in the fall of 2000, plans were drawn to rehab and renovate the property. In the spring of 2001, The Factory on Broadway opened its doors as a chic industrial office environment housing creative and innovative companies inside this historic and architectural experience few surviving structures can offer. For the past decade this transitive concept has evolved and its business model will be expanded to preserve other treasures in other cities. “The Factory's restorative green initiative is a model for all architecturally significant structures from our Industrial era,” asserts Raymond Klose, The Factory owner, President & CEO. 804factory.com
