Jesus has just told Peter he will die an unnatural death. He will go where he does not want to go. Those were not easy words for Peter to hear, and we will see how he responds to them in the next chapter. But before he can respond, Jesus speaks again, saying to Peter, "Follow Me" (John 21:19). "Follow Me." Peter has heard those words before. They were among the first words Jesus ever spoke to him. He heard them the day Jesus called him to leave his nets to come fish for people. Memories of that day must have flooded his mind. Now Peter, by the same lakeshore, hears the words again. Yet it isn't the same. So much has happened since that day. How sure of himself, how naive and foolish he was then. Not 73
