Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health: A Dynamic, Rapidly Growing Field Several decades of research have clearly demonstrated the importance of a child’s earliest years. Most importantly, the relationships formed with parents and caregivers during this time establish the foundation for all future development – intellectual, social, emotional, physical and behavioral.

The one-year program is designed for professionals whose work directly or indirectly impacts infants and toddlers. Coursework, observation and consultation prepare participants to implement the principles of infant social and emotional development in their everyday work.

Research has also shown that behavioral and mental health problems can emerge in infants, toddlers and preschoolers. If left undiagnosed and untreated, resulting problems can include school failure, child abuse, delinquency and mental illness.

The two-year program, designed for mental health clinicians and advanced graduate students, builds on the Infant/Family Studies coursework, adding a mental health clinical practice emphasis. Topics include assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological and emotional challenges that affect very young children.

The increased recognition of young children’s critical and unique needs has revealed a severe shortage of professionals knowledgeable in this field. As one of a handful of prestigious Harris programs in the country, and the only one in the Southwest, the Harris Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Training Institute seeks to fill this knowledge gap through two state-ofthe-art training programs: Dr. Alison Steier is pleased to announce that applications for The Harris Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Training Institute (201516) are being accepted, starting now, and will start to be considered mid-March. Enrollment is limited and subject to a number of criteria, posted on the webpage: www.swhd.org/training/infant-mental-healthcertification

Family Resource Center Male Call - Father Services

At the Family Resource Center, a strong emphasis is placed on father involvement. Studies have shown, having a father or positive, consistent male caregiver, involved in a child’s life not only improves children’s emotional well-being and promotes positive behavior, but has also been shown to increase school performance, as well as verbal and problem solving skills. The Family Resource Center (FRC) in Mesa, a program of the Child Crisis Center, strives to provide no-cost educational, fun and enriching opportunities for families that increase knowledge of child development, build parenting skills, and promote positive parent and child interaction. Do You Have the Skills to Provide Child Care Services for Children With Special Needs? Did you know that DES contracted child care programs/providers may receive additional funding from DES Child Care Administration (CCA) for providing child care services to children with special needs? The Federal Child Care and Development Fund helps low-income families, families receiving public assistance, and those families transitioning from public assistance in obtaining child care. It also provides funds to improve the quality of child care. Contracts are awarded through a competitive process known as Request for Proposals or RFP. This includes contracts to provide child care services for children with special needs. What is the purpose of the contract? The purpose is to provide high quality and enhanced child care services to children with special needs from families that meet eligibility requirements for the child care subsidy. Am I eligible to apply for the contract? To qualify, a child care provider/program must be regulated by either DHS or DES and hold a current DES provider registration agreement. How much do I receive from the funds? The rates for caring for children with special needs are negotiated during the RFP process. How can I apply? Any interested programs/providers must submit a response when the DES Office of Procurement publishes an RFP for this contract. The current contract started on January 1, 2011, and the contract cycle is approximately every five years. How do I know when the office of procurement publishes an RFP? In order to receive notifications for any bid opportunities, you must be registered on the Procure AZ website as a vendor at the following link. https://procure.az.gov/bso/ Step-by-step registration instructions can be found at the following link on the website. https://spo.az.gov/sites/default/files/Step-by-Step_Vendor_Registration.pdf To be notified of these contracts, you need to select the correct commodity codes (NIGP codes) when registering for Procure AZ. NIGP Class: 952 – Human Services NIGP Item: 17 – Day Care: H017-00 You may select other NIGP Codes as well. How can I get more information about the special needs contract? Contact: Hiroko Flores Early Childhood Development Policy Specialist DES/Child Care Administration Direct Phone: 602-542-2572 Email: hflores@azdes.gov IMPORTANT: Please note that once an RFP is published, any questions regarding the RFP must be directed to the DES Office of Procurement at 602-364-0170. Did you realize…… ■■

How important and valuable play is to your child?

■■

That children develop their imagination and creativity by their play experiences?

■■

That when you give your child opportunities to play by: □□ Building with blocks- they get to learn about geometry, gravity, shapes and balance. □□ Creating a grocery or other dramatic play- they discover how to problem solve, build social skills, develop math skills and gives them the chance to figure out how business works. □□ Scribbling- it makes way to writing and drawing and better fine motor control.

■■ That playing with your child builds your relationship with him. So make the time for the two of you to sing, dance, read, talk and have fun together. ■■ That exploring the outdoors with your child creates fond memories for both of you, while playing in the park, doing hopscotch with other families on the block or even digging together in the sand box. ■■ That play allows your child the chance to grow into an avid learner and a well-rounded person (Play Is FUNdamental) Plan on spending a day of play on Saturday, April 4th from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the Ultimate Play Date. The Scottsdale Public Library in conjunction with First Things First and its other sponsors is holding its third annual Ultimate Play Date. Smart Support

Arizona’s Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation System Does Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (Arizona’s SMART SUPPORT) actually work? A three-year study of SMART SUPPORT, of over 775 teachers and 1,000 children, conducted by an independent agency, found the following: ■■ Increased teacher confidence in ability to deal effectively with challenging behavior ■■ Teacher-child relationships were enhanced ■■ Improved classroom emotional climate ■■ Increase in teacher knowledge of social & emotional development ■■ Increases in children’s self-regulation abilities ■■ Prevention of child expulsion What does this mean to parents and caregivers? We already know that high social and emotional capacity is directly linked to school readiness and success. Access to Smart Support services strengthens children’s social and emotional development. We provide support in three ways: child-focused, classroom focused, and program-focused, depending on your needs. We come to you and partner with you (at no cost) in your licensed center or regulated home, in First Things First funded regions.
