Health and Safety Series Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) is pleased to announce the availability of the new Health and Safety Series. This training series will be conducted by CCR&R, a program of the Association for Supportive Child Care in partnership with the Arizona Child Care Association. The series is funded by the Department of Economic Security (DES) Child Care Administration. Each series consists of a total of 24 hours of early child care health and safety trainings at no cost to child care providers or those interested in becoming a child care provider. The trainings are presented in a three day block or eight evening sessions. Topics include: ■■ Medication Administration ■■ Poison Prevention and Safety ■■ Safe Sleep (including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) ■■ Recognition and Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect ■■ Nutrition ■■ Infectious Diseases and Common Childhood Illnesses ■■ Emergency Preparedness ■■ Transportation and Child Passenger Safety ■■ Children with Special Health Care Needs ■■ Child Development

The Health and Safety Training Series will be scheduled at dates, times and locations located throughout the counties that ASCC and CCR&R currently serve, including Apache, Coconino, Gila, Maricopa, Navajo, Pinal and Yavapai. Information will be emailed to all providers who have provided an email address to CCR&R. New On-Line Program for Parents Do parents you know want help raising happy, healthy, safe children? Tell them about HOMESTYLES, a no-cost, on-line program! The University of Arizona, in conjunction with Rutgers University, presents an evidence-based program for families with young children. What is HOMESTYLES? ■■ It is a series of program guides (in English or Spanish) that give quick tips and fun ideas from experts and parents to help others make small, simple changes at home. Parents choose from 12 different guides, then choose which changes to make and how. HomeStyles gives easy, no-cost tips that can help every family — even those with busy lives and tight budgets. ■■

How much time does it take? It takes only about 15 minutes to review each guide. Then each day, parents spend a few minutes making simple, healthy changes suggested in the guide. Parents will read one guide each month for the next 12 months. Parents need Internet access, plus email OR phone.

How much does it cost? There is no charge! In fact, if parents try simple changes and do surveys along the way, they can earn $125 and keep small gifts we send such as pedometers and measuring cups.

Professional Career Pathway Project Congratulations from the Professional Career Pathway Project Team to the many PCPP students who received their Child Development Credentials, ECE Certificates of Completion and Associate of Applied Science Degrees. As one CDA student put it, “Earning my CDA was such a meaningful accomplishment”. All of you worked very hard to reach a milestone in your professional career whether completing your “pathway” or completing another semester of classes. All of your hard work benefits the young children you work with on a daily basis. The Professional Career Pathway Project (PCPP) is a scholarship grant funded by DES and First Things First. If you are currently working in the field of Early Childhood (home and center child care, preschool, Head Start, etc.) PCPP will pay tuition for up to 12 credits a year and a stipend for your books. PCPP will even pay the CDA Assessment fee of $425 for eligible participants. Seventeen community colleges throughout Arizona offer the Professional Career Pathway Project. 2014 CPR and First Aid Classes Dan and Lesa West have provided training in Arizona since 1989. They are Master Trainers for American Safety & Health Institute & Medic First Aid as well as Faculty for American Heart Association – Lesa is now Regional Faculty. Lesa also served as AHA BLS Chair for several years as well as volunteered to help write the legislation regarding the AEDs. Child Care Professional Training (CCPT) Program The Child Care Professional Training (CCPT) Program is a two-week (60 hour) course provided with funding from the Department of Economic Security, Child Care Administration (DES/CCA). The purpose of this training is to prepare individuals with minimal or no work experience for employment in the field of child care and early education. The training is open to any interested individual and is offered at no cost. Career opportunities can include working in a child care center, preschool, Head Start or a child care group home or becoming a DES certified family child care provider.

Seating is limited to 20 participants per session and preregistration is required. School’s Out, Make it Count: Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs Better Quality = Better Outcomes for Kids

Do you want to provide the best possible programming for your school-aged children? Many of you have heard about Quality First!, Arizona’s statewide system for supporting quality programs that serve children from birth to age 5, but have you heard about the Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs? The Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs were developed to improve quality programs for ALL children and youth throughout our state, birth through college. We know that early childhood is a critical time for brain development and learning, but we also know that children continue to thrive from a supportive environment well after the age of five. As a provider you want to offer the best possible programming to every child who walks through your doors, which is the reason why the Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs were developed. The standards were developed by key stakeholders across the state to establish a common language for all programs and gain a better understanding of what quality looks like across the board. The standards are the first step of a continuous quality improvement process. You can support our efforts of improving quality programming and outcomes for all children by voluntarily adopt the standards by signing our “Pledge to Quality” (to sign the pledge, please visit www.azafterchool). The second step of the process is the development of an assessment tool that aligns to the standards. We are excited to announce that the tool is currently being drafted and should be available to providers by this fall. Once the draft of the tool is completed, the tool will be piloted with 150 different programs across the state. It is important to note that, both the standards and the tool are available at no cost to anyone in the community who is interested in improving the quality of their program. Lastly, the third step in this process is the development of a professional development framework that aligns trainings to what is needed in our state. Niños en Mi Casa Program The goal of the Niños en Mi Casa Program is to assist interested individuals with the Department of Economic Security (DES) home certification process to start a family child care business in their home. To that end, the Niños Program offers technical assistance, including home visits to assess your home and discuss DES rules and regulations for safeguarding. The Program also provides assistance with all required forms. During the certification process, you will be provided with eight (8) hours of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) trainings, either individually or in a group. Financial assistance is offered to help with items required for certification. This can include such items as, fire extinguishers, outlet covers, a first aid kit, nap mats or payment for child care liability insurance. The Family Resource Center The Family Resource Center (FRC) located in Mesa, is a branch of the Child Crisis Center. FRC is a no cost resource for all families and community members. We offer children’s playgroups, parenting classes, topic-based workshops, and many other resources. The FRC has experience with programs and classes that are not only proven to be effective in supporting and strengthening families through education and intervention, but also a safe and fun environment for enriching opportunities that promote parent and child interaction. *Some classes may require nominal workbook fee. First Steps Together at FRC is a specifically designed no-cost program for moms and their infants birth to one year. First Steps Together stresses the importance of interaction between mom and baby because the first five years in a child’s life are not only crucial for brain development, but are also foundational in shaping a child’s future development of relationships, achievements in school, and social competence. First Steps Together is a bimonthly, hour long program that provides opportunities for moms to learn a variety of purposeful ways to playfully interact with their child(ren). Our program encourages development in the following areas: movement and motor skills, brain development, sensory skills, and early language and literacy. First Steps Together also provides opportunities for moms to interact and network with one another and gain peer support. The group is perfect for first time moms who are looking for new ways to engage their infants in healthy play and create a strong bond and attachment. Smart Support partners early childhood mental health consultants with child care providers to promote the social and emotional development of all children in care and help them respond to children with behavioral challenges.
