INSPIRE Early Childhood Leadership Conference Professional Development The Inspire Early Childhood Leadership Series provides professional development in the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. Workshops and classes are offered each in the fall and spring during the school year. Internationally recognized as best practice, the Reggio Emilia approach reflects the influences of Montessori, Piaget, Vygotsky, and American theorists such as Bruner and Gardner. Teachers provide rich, meaningful learning experiences that incorporate the principles, practice and outcomes outlined in both the Arizona Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standards. This commitment to quality is reflected in the accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Sponsored by Pinnacle Presbyterian Preschool, the INSPIRE classes and workshops are uniquely positioned to provide professional development for educators in a real school setting. In 1995, the Pinnacle opened its doors with two teachers and seven children. Today the school employs 22 teachers in nine classes, reaching out to 160 families and 170 children. NAEYC accredited and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, Pinnacle Presbyterian preschool is regarded as one of the finest places of early learning in the Phoenix valley.

Babies and Toddlers Need More Reading Time A recent national study shows there is good news and challenges when it comes to families reading daily with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The good news is parents recognize that reading with young children is important in developing language and literacy skills. The challenge is families aren’t starting early enough. Scholastic recently released the Kids and Family Reading Report, its annual survey of children’s reading. The report shows that while 73 percent of parents say they started reading aloud to their child before age one, more than 50 percent say they didn’t start until their baby was six months old. First Things First reminds Arizona families that 90 percent of a child’s critical brain development happens by age five and daily interactions with caregivers have a huge impact on building vocabulary and language. When infants hear and use language, their brains develop the connections needed to learn how to read. Families can help foster early language and literacy skills in various ways. Read with young children from the day they are born. Even very young babies respond to the warmth of a lap and the soothing sound of a book being read aloud. No matter your child’s age, help their vocabulary grow through your daily interactions: describe what you’re doing; read signs and labels aloud; sing songs; and, make up rhymes. There are several resources to help families instill a love of reading in their children. First Things First’s YouTube page hosts videos that demonstrate how to read with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The Arizona Kith and Kin Project provides early childhood training and support to family, friend and neighbor child care providers that increase the participant’s knowledge to make sure young children love reading and books. And, Read On Arizona, a FTF partner that engages communities in supporting early literacy for kids birth to 8 years old, has an early literacy guide and book suggestions for every developmental stage on their website, readonarizona.org. GED Incentive Program The Division of Child Support Services offers GED Incentive Program for non-custodial parents. School is not just for kids! The Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) is offering a new incentive to non-custodial parents who obtain a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate. The incentive is part of the Division’s Customer Engagement Initiative, which shifts the focus from enforcement to support. “When we first created the Customer Engagement Initiative, we wanted to include ways in which we could help non-custodial parents better their lives and thus be able to better provide for their children,” said DCSS Assistant Director Todd Bright. “Helping individuals receive a diploma or GED seemed to fit naturally into this category.” There are many reasons why finishing high school or obtaining a GED can help, including: ■■ Increased earning potential: According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in 2012, the average income for an individual who did not have a high school diploma or equivalent earned $22,900 per year; while an individual who had earned a high school diploma or equivalent earned $30,000 per year. That’s a 32 percent increase. ■■

Decrease unemployment potential: According to a another NCES study, in 2010, 30 percent of individuals between 16 and 29 years old without a high school diploma or equivalent were unemployed. That’s compared to a 19 percent unemployment rate of the general population.

However, perhaps the biggest benefit in parents obtaining a diploma or GED is the increased capability to care and provide for their children. “We’ve found when a non-custodial parent makes steady income, it’s easier to meet the monthly child support obligation. Those funds then go to provide children with the items needed not only to survive, but thrive,” adds Bright. “It’s a win-win for everyone.” Non-custodial parents with an open DCSS case who receive their high school diploma or GED after July 1, 2014, may be eligible for a reduction of up to $1,000 of monies owed to DCSS. (Please note, this reduction does not apply to child support monies received by custodial parents). Those who wish to participate in the program are required to produce a copy of their GED or High School diploma transcript. More information about the GED Incentive Program is available on the DCSS Website (www.azdes.gov/az_child_support/) or by calling (602) 252-4045.
