The History of Springmaid Mountain

Spruce Pine, NC was originally founded in 1913 and operated as a MINING CITY. The area continues to be a hotspot for both mining tours and other outdoor adventures. Check out the information enclosed for places to explore in the area.

Before Springmaid Mountain was a retreat, it was a ZOO ANIMAL REFUGE . Alton Freeman ran the refuge with his family in the 1960’s and 1970’s. They had antelope, yaks, and camels that lived on the property year-round.

In 1983, LEROY SPRINGS & COMPANY, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Fort Mill, SC, purchased the mountain property located near Spruce Pine to provide additional amenities to the employees of Springs Cotton Mills. Throughout the late 1980s, LSC constructed additional cabins, the bunkhouse, kitchen and dining hall, campsites, trout ponds and renovated the 12-stable barn. In 1990, the Pavilion and Overlook Cabin were completed. Today, Springmaid Mountain is a 400-ACRE RETREAT secluded in the Blue Ridge Mountains and situated on the North Toe River between Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell. Hiking, horseback riding and fishing are available to guests of all backgrounds who come to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and the activities offered therein.

For more information about the mission of Leroy Springs & Company and the vision of Anne Springs Close, visit LeroySprings.com.
