Opportunities to Increase Sustainable Materials Development in the Building and Construction Industry

Eric Dumain, Global Marketing Director, Arkema Coating Resins

While the Adhesives and Sealants industry has committed to improving sustainable materials development, the industry has not yet fully realized the adoption of lower carbon footprint offerings. Moreover, there is not a consistent answer to the question of “What is Sustainability”. Emerging topics such as LEED v5 and focus on embodied carbon as value drivers further complicate the picture and are pressuring firms in the construction value chain to take action in order to satisfy the demands of myriad stakeholders. We have recently worked with a leading business school program to understand more clearly how to address these topics and to subsequently illustrate approaches to construction material end-users that show the importance and benefits of choosing sustainable products.

Packages as an Ecosystem

Chris Schaefer, Global Sustainability Director, Earthfirst Films

Compostable packages are part of an ecosystem where both materials and energy cycle. The cycles are crucial for sustainability and for environmental health. Components are sourced from natural, bio-based ecosystems. Composting packages complete the cycle by transitioning into natural, organic biomass. This biomass supports the next cycle of growth in packaging feedstocks. As nature intended.

Packaging as an Ecosystem Panel

MODERATOR: Chris Schaefer, Global Sustainability Director, Earthfirst Films

Designing for package End of Life (EOL) and enabling a functioning, circular system are vital keys in the ecosystem. As value chain activators - panelists will contribute to this state of the industry session with current initiatives, future technologies, packaging optimization, circularity in composting and environmental impact. The panel will be followed by audience Q&A and further discussion of the packaging market needs.

PANEL:

• Yael Vodovotz, Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Functional Food, Research and Entrepreneurship, Ohio State University

Sustainability Through the Lens of Brand Managers

John Ely, Chief Marketing Officer, Heartland Industries

In the wake of business in the 21st century, sustainability has emerged as a paramount concern for industries worldwide. While most companies have a focus on meeting environmental standards, few have capitalized on the market value of being viewed as a “Sustainability Centric” organization. This presentation explores the transformative potential of sustainable practices across various sectors, focusing on product development, marketing, and branding.

9:10 – 9:50 a.m. A Manufacturer’s Perspective: Sustainability Targets and the Importance of Strategic Partnerships

Monica Morano, Product Sustainability Specialist, Sika Corporation

Manufacturers of building materials have set strict near-term and long-term goals to limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions and meet Net Zero targets. Reaching these targets requires a strong understanding of an organization’s operations and their entire supply chain. What role does transparency and data analysis play in mapping an organization’s footprint? This presentation explores the complexities of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and how suppliers and manufacturers of adhesives and sealants must collaborate in order to develop accurate emissions data for the materials they produce.

9:50 – 10:05 a.m. BREAK

10:05 – 10:45 a.m.

Sustainable Raw Material Selection – Making Sense of Saving Cents

Laura James, Marketing Specialist, Kraton Corporation

Corporate sustainability targets are set, and regulations continue evolving. With the majority of GHG-reduction options falling within Scope 3, understanding the true financial impact of making a raw material change is paramount. What should be considered beyond the face value of a product and how can suppliers make a positive difference? This discussion will explore the cost of product carbon footprint with a focus on raw material selection.

Scope 3 Strategies for Purchased

Goods

and Services: Working Collaboratively with Suppliers

Tad Radzinski, Co-Founder and President, Sustainable Solutions Corporation

Scope 3 emissions are the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but that the organization indirectly impacts its value chain. New regulations as well as commitments and requirements from large organizations are pushing companies to measure Scope 3 emissions and set science-based targets. Quantifying the Scope 3 emissions of an organization is a comprehensive task which requires a clear understanding of the activities within their value chain. The truth is most companies often feel overwhelmed by the scale of this effort and do not know where to begin. This session provides actionable steps for measuring, reporting, and reducing your Scope 3 emissions for the purchased goods and services category which is directly connected to your suppliers.

1:40 – 2:20 p.m. Increasing Transparency via Product Portfolio Assessment: Digital

Solutions for Systematic Analyses

Joel Schall, Director Innovation & Technology, Henkel

Integrating a systematic analysis of the sustainability performance of our products into both the strategic portfolio management and innovation management enables us to further accelerate our contribution to sustainability. The presentation will illustrate this portfolio assessment methodology and the “Henkel Environmental Assessment Reporting Tool” (HEART), a novel digital solution to automatically calculate the product carbon footprint of about 62,000 products.

2:20 – 3:00 p.m. How to Show Compliancy in the Complex Global Landscape of VOC Emission Requirements

Tim Dickinson, Business Development - VOC Emissions, Eurofins Product Testing

This session will focus on the current (and future) landscape for VOC emission requirements for adhesives and sealants, in the US, Europe, and the rest of the world. How do they affect producers of adhesives and sealants as well as their suppliers? What are some of the trends moving forward? What are the different certification programs for products and how do they compare with one another?
