The pandemic created an upside-down world across the global supply chain, which has made supply chain a household word (and usually not a good one). The tenants of the past, such as ‘lean’ and ‘just in time’ are ineffective in this new world and can actually lead to your destruction. Resiliency and creativity are imperative to battling the onslaught of challenges in today’s upside-down world. Looking ahead, supply chain has the opportunity to trans form into a value delivery tool for your business. Digitalization and automation will be key in making this happen.

From climate change concerns to circular economy mandates. From reducing carbon footprints to eliminating the use of chemicals of concern to human health or the environment (PBTs). From green claims to greenwashing, and class actions to SEC reporting obligations. What do all of these matters have in common? They generally fall under the heading of “Sustainability.” Whether in terms of how you source materials, how you run your facility, or what starting agents you should or should not use in making your products, there are a host of consultants, bureaucrats, and NGOs ready to encourage American companies to go green, to tell them how to do it, and to shame them -- often without regard to the competing obligations and responsibilities that corporate enterprises have to their employees, their customers, and their shareholders. This talk delves into the meaning of sustainability from a traditional perspec tive, a legal perspective, and a public perspective taking into account a corporation’s responsibilities with respect to product stewardship, economic stewardship, and corporate stewardship, which together form the pillars upon which a corporation must operate to succeed for society, its customers, its employees, and its shareholders.

The pandemic has turbocharged the shift to digital and massive sales channel/market transformations. Today cus tomers want to control their buying experience, including problem-solving content and the choice to buy directly from the factory. Industrial product marketers have significant opportunity to leverage digital, but it’s difficult to transition traditional market strategies to more digital-centric, customer-focused approaches. One size does not fit all! This session explores the challenges and solutions to serving end-user customers digitally across highly fragmented markets, while preserving critical channel partnerships. We’ll share MDM benchmarking research on customer digital buying preferences, examples of successful manufacturer-direct and channel-support strategies, and ideas for building the digital-first value chain of the future.
