Let’s be honest. Washington is the worst “reality show” on TV. The acting is terrible. The dialogue and pace are mind numbing. And nothing happens. Sadly, the show has been renewed for another season. Meanwhile, the US economy is in its 63rd month of growth. The stock market is setting records daily. Consumer spending is at record highs. Housing prices rose at double-digit rates the last two years. The Federal Reserve Board reiterated their intention to keep interest rates low at least through 2014. Europe is slowing emerging from its second recession in four years and Japan is recovering from its third recession in five years. The Middle East is a powder keg. Okay, the rollout of Affordable Health Care is making everyone sick. Yet by almost every key metrics the US economy is gaining momentum. For business’ sake, let’s look forward. On April 29, 2014, Dr. Jeff Dietrich, colleague of Alan Beaulieu, and Sr. Analyst with ITReconomics™, will break down what is behind the current macro-economic trends. Jeff will tell us where the US and global economies are headed in 2014 and 2015 and what will be the impact for ASC members. We will look at the good and the not-so-good sectors that impact ASC members and determine a course of action (management objectives) going forward.

9:15 – 10:00 a.m. Peak Oil and the Outlook for Crude Oil Supply & Demand Will Martin, Peak Oil Consultant, Chevron Is peak oil a myth? From warnings that “the sky is falling” in the mid 2000’s to a broad dismissal in the popular media today, sentiment surrounding peak oil has shifted dramatically in recent years. With technology like hydraulic fracturing bringing new sources of crude on line, do we still need to worry about a peak in the global oil production rate? Find out what academics and major energy organizations are saying and learn what the future of supply and demand may be for one of the most important inputs for the chemical industry.

10:00 – 10:30 a.m.

BREAK

10:30 – 11:15 a.m. The Shale Gas Revolution Jason Smith, Manager, Market Development, America’s Natural Gas Alliance The recent surge in natural gas production is having a huge impact on the energy landscape domestically, as well as globally. America now has an abundant supply of natural gas, thanks primarily to shale gas and our ability to economically abstract the resource, due to advances in hydraulic fracturing. This “shale gas revolution” is changing the supply and demand picture for power generators, industrial users, LNG exports, the transportation sector and pipeline infrastructure across the nation and spurring growth in all areas, in large part because of the predicted sustained low price of the resource. Continued increases in demand for dry natural gas in the traditional power generation market will promote additional development, leading to expanded natural gas liquids production, which are essential to the industrial sector and the continuation of the domestic manufacturing renaissance we are currently seeing in this country. Emerging new markets in the transportation and LNG export sectors will show dramatic growth as well due to the favorable economics that abundant, domestic natural gas has created.

Poinciana AB, Lower Level Meeting Rooms

9:15 – 10:00 a.m. Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene (VAE) Copolymer Dispersions: A Natural Gas-Derived Technology for Caulks & Sealants Bruce Gruber, Technical Manager, Wacker Chemical Company Since the early 60‘s, VAE dispersions have been used in many application areas such as coatings, adhesives, and binders for non-woven substrates. Global trends towards environmentally friendly binder technologies have increased the use of VAE dispersions. In the 1990’s, VOC regulations provided the first real driver to showcasing VAE copolymer technology. VAE copolymers are inherently low VOC capable. Within the last five years, advances in natural gas recovery techniques have dramatically increased the estimates of long term domestic reserves. VAE copolymers are predominantly derived from natural gas. Recently this chemistry is finding use for caulks and sealants where product can be formulated to comply with ASTM and UL standards.

11:00 – 11:30 a.m. Adhesion of Electrospun Polymer Blends Josh (Shing-Chung) Wong, Professor, The University of Akron This work creates new frontiers for advancing adhesion technologies using electrospun polymer blends. A highly spinnable polymer was successfully blended with an adhesive polymer by the electrospinning process. Electrospinning appears to be a viable approach to nano-connectors between polymer-polymer and polymer-metal interfaces. Tests were performed to evaluate the shear adhesion between the electrospun polymer membranes and the substrates. The adhesion strength between polymer-polymer interfaces is stronger than that between polymer-metal interfaces. The increase in tackifier concentration contributes to a marked increase in adhesion strength but yet homogenous and continuous PVP composites. Fiber diameter, which influences wettability of fiber surfaces, decreases with an increase in the tackifier content. The electrospun polymer blend was found to produce superior adhesion properties as compared to their constituents.

11:30 a.m. – Noon Obtaining Robust Adhesion from Bio-inspired Mushroom-like Fibers: A Geometrical Investigation Burak Aksak, Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University This presentation will describe how the adhesion strength of an individual bio-inspired mushroom-like fiber is modeled and optimized using analytical methods and finite elements simulations.

Recycling Trends and Policy Challenges in Carpet Flooring Industry Robert People, Executive Director, Environmental Impact Group, Inc.

2014

4:15 – 5:00 p.m.

Carpet recycling in the U.S. has been underway since 2002. After more than a decade of experience, along with 2.5 years of extended product responsibility legislation in CA, we have learned many lessons of what works and what does not. This presentation will focus on who is the Carpet America Recovery Effort along with progress over the years, issues facing the carpet recycling industry in 2014 and the special role commercial carpet plays. Commercial carpet, typically glued down for safety reasons, is very difficult to recycle due in part to the adhesives used. An explanation of why this is a concern and discussion about how the industry can help solve the challenge will be presented.

Education Track 3: New Technology and Application

Advanced Technology Link Poinciana CD, Lower Level Meeting Rooms

Sponsored by:

2:45 – 3:15 p.m. Evaluating Adhesion Interactions of Model Surfaces in an Aqueous Environment using Contact Mechanics Nassim Rahmani, Ph.D. Candidate, Kansas State University In this work the JKR (Johnson-Kendall-Roberts) theory of contact mechanics was used to determine the effect of an aqueous environment on the adhesion properties of various model surfaces. These surfaces consisted of glass with surface functionalities including hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and intermediate groups. These glass surfaces were functionalized with self-assembled monolayers of carbomethoxy, polyethylene oxide, methyl, and phenyl ring. The results showed that the thermodynamic work of adhesion underwater is dependent on the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the surface while no dependency was observed in air.

3:15 – 4:00 p.m. Influence of Organic-fillers in Phenol-formaldehyde Wood Adhesion Xing Yang, Ph.D Candidate, Virginia Tech Veneer-based structural wood composites such as plywood and laminated veneer lumber are commonly bonded with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesives that are formulated with biomass organic-fillers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of three biomass fillers on adhesive performance. The three filler types lead to different adhesive flow properties where particle size effects are also detected. Filler particle size effects are found with respect to adhesive fracture toughness and bondline thickness. Regarding adhesive penetration, no clear particle size effects are observed. Wicking analysis through the Washburn equation reveals filler-dependent surface effects.

4:00 – 4:30 p.m. PLATech: Eco-Friendly Polylactic Acid-based Hot Melt Adhesives Technology Alexander Bakken, Research Assistant, Purdue University The PLATech eco-friendly biodegradable adhesive-coating ionizing particle tailored technology has been developed to offer unique advantages and benefits such as: tailored bonding strength as good as or over 100% higher than from state-of-art; rapid functionality within seconds to minutes; for joining disparate surfaces without surface preparation and remaining VOC-free environmentally responsible. The presentation will cover the underlying science and details of experimental validation and comparisons.

4:30 – 5:00 p.m. Pollen: New Applications as Fillers and Adhesives Carson Meredith, Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, Georgia Tech This presentation will discuss recent discoveries of pollen’s utility as both a filler for polymers as well as an adhesive system. These features derive from a combination of pollen particles’ unique surface chemistry and microstructure. Such aspects combine to achieve a natural pressure- and humidity-sensitive adhesive system. In addition, pollens can be very effective fillers for thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, achieving both reinforcing and strengthening effects. Recent results are discussed in light of the potential to apply these natural designs in sustainably-sourced products.

5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Closing Session Palm DEF, Lower Level Meeting Rooms Health Product Declarations: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Martin Sweeney, Market Development Manager, Celanese Reporting tools, such as the Health Product Declaration (HPD), are sometimes being met with resistance and skepticism because these tools are perceived to only target specific ingredients while ignoring levels of exposure. Further, some manufacturer’s worry that cataloging ingredients will expose proprietary information to competition. Proponents say that chemical transparency is critical to the health and safety of construction workers and the occupants in the built environment. The objective of this presentation is not to advocate(for or against) reporting instruments like Health Product Declarations but, rather, to review the origins of these initiatives, understand how this can affect product specification and begin to consider what (if any) strategy is best for your company.

6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
