These centers will produce data and knowledge concerning inherent properties and life cycle impacts of compounds which can enable the development of a holistic and proactive approach for public health and ecological protection.

Annual growth rates as high as 245% have been reported for the new tablet market, while the more established smartphone market is still growing in the range of 42% – 52%. The need for devices to exhibit small size, light weight, and drop resistance creates unique drivers for adhesives to replace mechanical fasteners in mobile electronics assembly. Update on U.S. EPA Chemical Action Plans on MDI and TDI Sahar Osman-Sypher, Manager, American Chemistry Council (ACC) U.S. EPA released two Chemical Action Plans, one for MDI and one for TDI, in April 2011. Although not themselves regulatory action, EPA’s Action Plans for MDI and TDI express interest in consumer products that may contain “uncured” MDI or TDI (e.g., glues, sealants, SPF insulation products) to which consumers may be exposed; as opposed to fully cured consumer products made with polyurethanes. The plans suggest a variety of potential approaches intended by the agency to help reduce consumer exposures to diisocyanates from uncured polyurethane products. New Polyolefin Technologies: Continued Evolution for Hygiene Adhesives
In the recent past, increasing use and availability of new catalyst technologies have resulted in a healthy new development pipeline and a wide variety of olefin polymer grades. Successful formulation of these newer materials allows a breadth and robustness in adhesive applications that had previously been unavailable with polyolefin technology. While representing a change in technology compared to widely used styrenic block copolymer based adhesives, converting to the new polyolefin based adhesives can be straightforward when leveraging the experience of an applications expert with a robust understanding of the unique properties of the new formulations.

Identification and reduction of variation in the manufacturing process are critical to achieving a balance of managed costs required to remain competitive and profitable with the demands of consumers for high performance products. Effective management of variation in adhesive dispensing applications can deliver lower cost, lower weight, and more environmentally conscious finished disposable hygiene products while maximizing production efficiency. A methodology for identification and measurement of variation in addition to a portfolio of equipment solutions to control and minimize variation will be presented.

Fibrous Pressure Sensitive Adhesives Dr. Eugene Joseph, Research Professor, Virginia Tech Melt blowing is a melt extrusion process that allows us to start with a material in resin form and obtain a final web product in one step. When pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA’s) are used in the melt blowing process they create PSA’s that are porous. Work has also been done on melt blowing pressure sensitive adhesives in multi-layer forms (i.e. multiple layers within each microfiber). The combination of melt blowing and pressure sensitive adhesives can to lead to novel materials and will be discussed. Recent work on electrospinning acrylic block copolymers into nanofibers and studies on the kinetics of phase separation in tackified styrene-isoprene block copolymers will also be presented.

Data Collection Protocols for Adhesive Testing Results using the Materials Selection and Analysis Tool Daniel DeSchepper, Materials Engineer, U.S. Army Research Lab The design of land vehicles with new armor packages have evolved into complex systems with a broad spectrum of possible designs that are continually evolving to meet the protection needs imposed by ever emerging threats. Adhesive selection plays a critical role in armor design. The Army’s adhesives needs push the quest for desirable properties well outside of the aerospace regime, which makes a trial and error selection approach both costly and time consuming. Material informatics and data mining computational tools are now moving towards the practicality needed for drawing accurate correlations between complex high loading rate responses and simpler quasi-static properties.

Adhesive and Sealant Technology Needs for the Aerospace Industry Dr. Kay Blohowiak, Technical Fellow - Adhesives and Bonding, The Boeing Company New adhesive and sealant technologies will continue to play increasingly important roles in advanced aerospace systems. The emergence of more capable adhesives and sealants with better performance and durability over wide ranges of conditions is crucial for efficient, lightweight, and durable structures. New adhesive and sealant curing technologies are needed to reduce manufacturing costs and flow times. The development of multifunctional materials that can perform not only their basic adhesive functions but also provide additional capability and the integration of smart materials concepts could result in an expanded adhesive design space. This presentation will outline such emergent adhesive and sealant technology needs for existing and future aerospace systems.

Novel Higher Melt, Low Molecular Weight Maleated Polyethylene’s for High Performance APAO and mEO HMA Systems Ernie Ballester, Manager, Field Marketing-Americas, Honeywell International Inc. Honeywell has developed novel higher melt point, low molecular weight maleated polyethylene’s (MAPEs) to improve the performance of hot melt adhesive systems incorporating amorphous polyalphaolefin (APAO) and metallocene ethylene 1-octene (mEO) polymers. We will present data showing improvements in cold temperature and low surface energy adhesion, heat resistance, set time, green strength improvement and heat and color stability, as well as discuss the advantages of their use in packaging and assembly applications.

Advances in Reducing Migratory Concerns with Benzoate Plasticizer Technology in Latex Adhesives Bill Arendt, Research Fellow, Emerald Kalama Chemical LLC Plasticizers are very useful additives as they expand the ability to formulate adhesives for diverse applications. In the European Union there is a particular concern with food packaging adhesive migratories attributed to additive use. Therefore a need for plasticizers with fewer or no migratory concerns is developing. While plasticizers like dibenzoates are very safe from a health, environmental and safety point of view, the latest development in the plasticizer area for food packaging application has focused on plasticizers that could be used as direct food additives. Two plasticizers from the benzoate family have been identified that have that potential. This presentation will outline a basic plasticizer screen which was utilized to investigate the ability of these two experimental plasticizers to function in adhesives.

Novel CO2-based Polyols for Adhesives Applications Jason Anderson, Business Development, Novomer, Inc Novomer has developed a family of high performance sustainable polyols using CO2 as a raw material. These polyols are up to 50% CO2 by weight, making them low cost and affording them a carbon footprint advantage of 3-9x relative to existing petroleum-based materials. Novomer has developed polyurethane adhesive formulations which show favorable performance characteristics versus standard polyester and polyether polyols used in adhesives today.

11:15 a.m. to Noon Bio-based Polyols and Plasticizers Derived from Castor Oil for CASE Applications Dr. Haibin Yu, Technical Manager, Vertellus Specialties Inc. Dr. Yu will discuss reactive polyols and plasticizers derived from castor oil for polyurethane adhesive and sealant systems. Castor oil-based polyols cure with polymeric isocyanate to form polyurethane systems with a broad spectrum of properties. Details will be presented specifically highlighting data such as cure time, shore hardness, thermal properties, and other physical attributes. Castor oil-based plasticizers will also be discussed, including chemical structure and estimated solubility parameter and applications with polymers such as polyurethane.
The extraordinary adhesive properties of gecko feet have inspired several research groups to fabricate artificial gecko-like dry adhesives. We will present a novel facile method to incorporate tilt into the artificial adhesive pillars relying on conventional and unconventional techniques. Several polymer-based structures are fabricated with varying tilt angles and the dependence of adhesion and friction forces as a result of the tilt angle is shown. The results are in good agreement with the Peel Zone model, which predicts the magnitude of the adhesion and friction forces as a function of the peel angle or tilt angle. We will also describe the design of the next generation of gecko-like structures, which are expected to show greater anisotropy in adhesion and friction as well as enhanced overall adhesion and friction forces.

High Biomass Content Water Based Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Dr. Gang Pu, Research Associate, University of Minnesota The work described here is an example of a novel yet pragmatic approach to develop more sustainable PSA formulations through modifications of successful commercial products. Polyacrylates containing more than 50 wt% biomass were obtained by using a copolymer approach to prepare biomass-based, low glass transition macromonomers containing lactide and -caprolactone. This presentation will review the general synthesis approach, latex and cast film properties, and results of structural characteristics that provide insights on the performance of these novel adhesive materials.

California Green Chemistry Rules Hortensia Muniz, Senior Hazardous Substances Engineer, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) The regulations called for in California’s Green Chemistry Initiative will create a practical, meaningful and legally defensible approach to identifying and moving toward safer consumer products. Using a science-based process during a product’s design phase, the regulations require the identification of toxic ingredients and the analysis of alternatives to a safer ingredient. Based on the results of the analysis a number of steps can be taken, including removal of the toxic ingredient, posting product information for consumers, further research and development and safety measures. Ms. Muniz a principal author of the draft Safer Consumer Products Regulations will provide an overview of the timelines and duty to comply; the chemical and priority product prioritization process; the petition process; the alternatives analysis process and the regulatory responses.

Before joining Boeing, Kay obtained her BS in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota, her PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Texas A&M University, and was a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Washington, Materials Science and Engineering Department. In 1989, Kay joined The Boeing Company where her work in new materials developments in adhesives, surface preparation methods, coatings, novel interfaces, innovative joining architectures, and adhesion processes have resulted in technology implementations solving manufacturing, repair, and performance issues across the aerospace industry. Kay currently has over 30 patents and 50 publications in areas ranging from adhesive bonding and corrosion control, to inorganic polymers, superconductors, and coatings development.

Heather Campe is the Business Director of Nonwovens at H.B. Fuller Company, a worldwide leader in specialty adhesives. Prior to joining H.B. Fuller, Heather spent more than a decade working for National Starch & Chemical Co. and Henkel Adhesives. Scott Echols serves as a Product Chemistry Director in the Sustainable Business and Innovation Team at Nike. His responsibilities include promoting and driving the use of Green Chemistry practice into the design, development, and manufacturing of product. He has also been responsible for the implementation and oversight of product stewardship programs such as the Restricted Substances and Sustainable Chemistry Guidance (RSL-SCG) program and serves as a co-chair of the Outdoor Industry Associations Chemicals Management Working Group. Chris Ely is a Manager for Industry Analysis at the Consumer Electronics Association. Chris helps manage the CE MarketMetrics data shipment program and conducts industry analyses on a host of topics pertaining to the industry. Prior to joining CEA, Ely was a Research Analyst for Widmeyer Communications where he conducted public opinion polls and research analyses for Fortune 500 companies, professional associations, government and non-profit organizations. Before Widmeyer, Ely served as a Business Analyst for MCI for five years. Ely has also held research positions at the National Association of Broadcasters and the American Bankers Association. Rich Engler manages the Green Chemistry Program within the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He also works with EPA’s Existing and new chemicals programs as well as the Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators Program. He has won numerous awards for his work at EPA including the James W. Craig Pollution Prevention Leadership Award and three bronze medals. Before joining EPA in 1997, he taught Organic Chemistry at the University of San Diego. He earned his doctorate in physical organic chemistry from the University of California, San Diego.

Benjamin Funk is a Senior Applied Technology Chemist in the Global Nonwovens Division of Bostik. He has worked in the adhesive industry for 10 years in a variety of technical positions, including the development of acrylic and polyurethane polymers for water based adhesive applications. In his current role, Mr. Funk is responsible for working with customers to select and optimize adhesives for use in constructing disposable hygiene articles. Josh serves as the Technical Information & Public Affairs Manager, responsible for standard development and participation for UL Environment. He helps develop and track the ‘sustainable’ programs that are being utilized and developed throughout the world. As a LEED AP+, he has been able to assist product manufacturers in understanding how their products environmental qualities can work for architects, designers, specifiers, and builders. Josh has served on over 20 sustainable committees, including but not limited to the ASHRAE 189.1, NAHB National Green Building Standard, and ANSI/BIFMA E3 joint committees and he served on the original water and IEQ work group that developed the first public draft of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).
Eugene Joseph Virginia Tech
Dr. Joseph completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He did his graduate studies under the guidance of Professor Garth Wilkes in the area of processing-structure and properties of liquid crystalline polymers. Upon graduating from Virginia Tech in 1983, he joined 3M Company. He worked in a variety of different areas (pressure sensitive adhesives and adhesive tapes, melt blown nonwovens, medical tapes and dressings, co-extrusion of films) at 3M Company. He is the co-author of 35 U.S. issued patents and has commercialized a variety of products. He retired from 3M Company after 25 years as a Staff Scientist and is currently a Research Professor in the Institute of Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) and Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
Mark LaFrance U.S. Department of Energy
Mr. LaFrance currently is the manager for Building Envelope and Windows R&D programs at the Department of Energy in the Office of Building Technology. The program portfolio is funded approximately $16 million annually and is attempting to develop the next generation of technologies that will contribute to buildings that use very low energy. Mr. LaFrance received his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and a MS Degree in Urban Systems Engineering in 1998 from George Mason University.

He is PEng, CEng, Fellow of IMechE, Fellow ASME, Senior Member of AIAA and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
Martha Moore American Chemistry Council (ACC)
Martha Moore is senior director for policy analysis and economics at the American Chemistry Council. She analyzes the impact of various policy initiatives on the chemical industry, tracks business conditions and produces forecasts. She also directs the Council’s research on the direct and indirect economic contributions of the business of chemistry and the benefits to consumers. Ms. Moore has worked on chemical industry issues for more than 10 years and is an authority on the market dynamics for the chemical industry and its end-use customer industries. Ms. Moore holds a master’s degree in economics from Indiana University and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the National Association for Business Economics and the National Capital Area Chapter of the US Association for Energy Economics.

Christophe Morel is the Global Technical Marketing Manager in the Global Nonwovens Division of Bostik. He has worked in the adhesive industry for more than 20 years holding various positions in Product Development, Technical Support and R&D management, both in France and in the UK. In his current role, Mr. Morel works with Bostik’s global product development team in the development of innovative, new technologies for the global hygiene market. Mr. Morel graduated from Marseilles School of Organic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 1986. Ms. Muniz is a Senior Hazardous Substances Engineer for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Ms. Muniz has been involved in the environmental field for over twenty three years in environmental restoration and policy setting, with experience in both the private and public sectors. In recent years, Ms. Muniz has been one of the principal drafters of the Safer Consumer Products (“Green Chemistry”) regulations for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Prior to this, Ms. Muniz worked on hazardous waste management issues, including: transfer facilities, used oil, rejected shipments of wastes, financial assurance, and permit appeals. Earlier in her career, Ms. Muniz was responsible for leading and coordinating Site Assessments, Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, and Engineering Evaluations and Cost Analysis. For a brief period, Ms. Muniz partnered with a consulting firm and provided engineering support on contaminated sites that had been mismanaged and required extensive negotiations with state and local regulatory agencies. Ms. Muniz graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.

Dan Murad is the CEO and President of The ChemQuest Group, Inc. Speakers Sahar Osman-Sypher American Chemistry Council
Sahar Osman-Sypher is a Manager in the Chemical Products and Technology Division of the American Chemistry Council. She manages multiple panels within the division that focus on isocyanates, phosgene, vinyl chloride, amines, fatty nitrogen derivatives, and aliphatic esters among other chemicals. She also serves as a liaison with the ACC Center for the Polyurethanes Industry. Mrs. OsmanSypher has been with ACC for eight years and has been working with industry for nearly 11 years. Prior to ACC, she was a Manager at IPC- Association Connecting Electronics Industries, where she oversaw the activities of the Environmental, Health and Safety Steering Committee. She received her Bachelor’s in Biology from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Noshir Pesika Tulane University
Dr. Pesika joined the Chemical and Biomoelcular Engineering Department at Tulane in 2008 as an Assistant Professor. He attended Carnegie Mellon University where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree (1999) in Chemical Engineering and French. He then obtained his Ph.D. (2005) in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University where he developed a novel microfabrication technique involving microcontact printing and electrochemistry. The latter led to a provisional patent. Following his PhD, Dr. Pesika joined the University of California in Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral fellow. His honors include a Graduate Student Fellowship from NASA to study the nucleation and growth of zinc oxide nanoparticles, a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Intelligence Community to study the nanoscale contact mechanics of geckos, and he was recently named the Robert and Gayle Longmire Early Career Professorship in Chemical Engineering.

Gang Pu is an Associate Researcher in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities Campus). His current research projects include the development of environmentally benign coatings and adhesives, the study of wetting and adhesion involving soft substrates, and characterization of small molecule migration in polymer films. Gang holds a doctorate and Master of Science degree as well as a Bachelor in Materials Science. He received his BA from Tianjin University (China), MS from Tsinghua University (China), and PhD from University of California, Davis.

Alan Ramspeck has held numerous positions in engineering, product line management, operations and marketing during his more than 20 years with adhesive and sealant dispensing systems. Alan holds six U.S. patents related to various technologies in the industry and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Georgia. Nora obtained her BS in 1992 from Prairie View A&M University. She received two Masters Degrees in 1995 and a doctorate in 2000 from the University of Wisconsin. Her focus areas at EPA include holistic environmental assessment, sustainable processes, and life cycle approaches. Nora is a representative of the federal interagency group that implements and manages the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
Michael Schmeida Tremco Incorporated
Mr. Schmeida has been in-charge of sustainability for Tremco Commercial Sealants and Waterproofing since early-2008. Before that he was Product Manager and prior still in the Technical Services Group. He has been a LEED AP for eight years and leading the division’s sustainable programs even before assuming the role fulltime. He has been a featured speaker and author over two-dozen times, addressing local, regional and national groups such as California DTSC, Congressional Caucuses and now ASC five times, serves as Vice-Chair of ASTM E60 and is the Co-Chair of ASC’s Government Relations Committee. He also teaches at his twotime alma mater, The University of Akron, on sustainability and green marketing and is a volunteer in the community in the Akron-area.

Ross Spiegel is an Associate and Senior Specification Writer with the Connecticut-based architectural/engineering firm, Fletcher-Thompson, Inc. He is responsible for creating written construction documents, establishing technical standards and processes, managing the LEED certification process, and overseeing the firm’s Green Team. Mr. Spiegel is a registered architect in Connecticut, Florida and New York, and holds many professional credentials. In 1994, he was appointed as CSI’s liaison to the U.S. Green Building Council. Additionally, he has served on many USGBC committees and task teams.
