Brewing Active Lifestyles My initial inspiration began with an interest in urban decay, specifically the atmosphere it creates. In my findings from various authors, urban explorers, historians, and photographers, I settled on three reasons for the appeal of urban decay spaces: _Windows to the Past They often tell a story, playing on our sense of nostalgia as we search for personal connections. _Physical Representation of Time They oer a way to witness the passage of time, demonstrating the powerful resilience of nature and life. _Unrestricted Potential Void of any remaining expectations to uphold, they can become whatever they wish to be.

Concept Decay is time, and as a product of decay, ruins physically represent the passage of time. They offer unique texture and atmosphere as layers of activity have added significance and value. A ruin’s true glory, however, lies in what could be; the freedom of functions presents unrestricted potential. Abandoned since 1977, the former Falstaff Brewery is a beneficiary of decay. As with several similar structures across St. Louis, its brick architecture currently remains nothing more than a testament to the city’s brilliant past. The Active Pursuit, or TAP, is a recreation facility that aims to promote active lifestyles with an urban context, while building on the growing popularity of active leisure. TAP offers an inviting array of options and activities, all housed within a uniquely-urban, uniquely-St. Louis atmosphere. In addition to fitness opportunities, TAP provides the retail and community components to support active lifestyles. To celebrate the lure of decay and ruin, the renovations and additions aim for minimal impact, celebrating the existing texture while finding the right balance of definition in order to create a facility that is safe, functional, and profitable. This approach does not seek to stop, remove, or hide the decay; it celebrates it as a necessary step towards renewal. With an incredible foundation of history and an increasingly young population ready to act, the community needs a spark, a shift from the norm, to ignite an era of growth.

Parti

Shift

The moment or event that alters a space, i.e. the moment of abandonment

Void

The shift creates potential for new life and new growth in a space free of limits, restrictions, and expectations

Growth

Degrees of Definition Structured Suggested Options Increasingly popular activities, like CrossFit, require a small amount of fixed equipment. Spaces for such activities focus on providing the space and freedom to choose and develop personalized routines.

26

A second-floor track weaves through spaces as a connecting element, while oering its users views of the various activities available throughout the complex. Urban-themed obstacles and other temporary installations will provide new activities and challenges for members to explore.

With a wide variety of spaces and a complex floor plan, the inner courtyard plays a major role in tying everything together. Further development would explore the opportunity for graďŹƒti, large graphics, and painted murals to assist with wayfinding and to help brand the various spaces.
