ALUTIIQ /SUGPIAQ
Bird Rattles With Master Artist Andrew Abyo Winter hunting ceremonies with masked dancing, songs, and whistles were part of Alutiiq spiritual life until the late 1800s. Songs were sung to honor the ancestors and dancing followed, to the beat of drums and rattles. Ceremonies and feasts also marked other occasions - a boy’s first successful hunt, a girl’s first mensturation, or completion of a new kayak. Learn to make your own rattle with master artist Andrew Abyo. Art teachers and staff working with AN/AI students encouraged.
