Soapstone Carving With Master Artist Dick Weyiouanna

It is thought that soapstone carvings were first created as amulets or minimalist children’s toys. The oldest identifiable carving dates to more than 3,00 years ago. By the time of the first European contact, a fascination with the art had developed among traders, and they became highly prized trading goods. Soapstone carvings often depict birds, bears, land and sea mammals, human figures, and masks, and can communicate strong emotions. Learn to make your own carving with master artist Dick Weyiouanna. Art teachers and staff working with Alaska Native and American Indian students are encouraged.

Saturday, March 15th 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM Begich Middle School Art Room
