‘It’s all about brotherhood’ SAMUEL DAN BERIDO Correspondent

Peering through the eyes of oscillating struggle, the limitless numbers of scouts could be easily seen from their drilling passion and hard-work. And from over unlimited values learnt in their journey in the 6th ASEAN Jamboree, from Faith and belief to traversing difficult terrains, their moment of training has always begun within them. While countless scouts cross over ditch-mudded

areas in the Challenge Valley Obstacle course in E-park, compared to their immense teamwork and pocketed knowledge, it was a steadfast action that developed their character to surpass the challenge. “We’ve just finished the muddied valley of challenge Valley! And it was intense!” Jan Yui, a scout of Davao City said, “And it was really teamwork and passion that made that trip exciting.” Though some

adventures; the aquatic journey and jungle trip in Hijo Reservation, made scouts a lot exhausted, their part of contributing their culture and belief and including their skills in disaster reduction helped them achieve rewards greater than scouting: brotherhood. “It’s really about brotherhood and friendship that made me join the scouts team,” said Karen Jen Cruiz, a Surigao City Scout, “And while you’d get experience

and lessons for an extra, it’s really a worth opportunity to mingle with other scouts.” Leadership. Friendship. Responsibility. The three words a scoutS have always valued in their goals against odds and drills. Though countless times have faced them with even more harder challenges, their character and passion defeats challenges even though unmet before. A feat defeated, by scouts committed.

TAGUM CITY, PHILIPPINES—The holding of the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree broke previous records by achieving another feat as the most-attended scouting event in the history of the scouting movement in the ASEAN region. Now on the second day of the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree, the total number of participating scouters are all in - both from the foreign and local delegation. The sixth edition of the ASEAN Jamboree brought together 29,753 delegates, about 5,000 of which are members and volunteers of the International Service Team coming from various institutions and government centers all over the Philippines and outside the country. The international scout delegation comprises 13 different countries from in and outside the ASEAN region, summing up to a total of 386 foreign scouts, with Indonesia having the biggest delegation of 145 scouts. Malaysia follows with 100 scouts, Thailand with 46 scouts, Sri Lanka with 24 scouts, India with 18 scouts, Maldives with 15 scouts, Brunei Darussalam with 11 scouts, Singapore with 10 scouts, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Nepal, and Vietnam, each having four scouts, and lastly the Netherlands with one scout participant. Korean visitors also

graced the Camp Chief Night and the Cultural Night of the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree with an astounding orchestra performance by students from Gracias Music High School of South Korea. This year, with the Philippines hosting the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree, a whopping delegation of 24,560 local scouts break the country’s record of the number of delegates participating in the local scout jamborees. It can be recalled that last 2015 during the 16th National Scout Jamboree, over 22,000 scouts were recorded as delegates in the local scouting event. With international delegates present, the Jamboree is a perfect venue for cultural exchange and education. The Jamboree Modules such as Crossroads of Culture and Faith and Belief are both great ways to appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity and to foster cultural learning within the whole duration of the camp. The ASEAN Scouts Cultural Night also showcases the various culture of the ASEAN region through cultural performances.

Maldivian Scouts begin community service JET LEMUEL SALAZAR Correspondent

No matter how physically demanding or mentally draining a task could be, fatigue will be a mere afterthought as long as you are eager and willing to do the task. Despite sweating profusely, smiles still adorned the faces of scouts as they planted ornamental flowers during their community service module in the second day of the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree. Also performing the Community Service module were 13 Maldivian scouts. They may be few in numbers but they

more than made up for it with their eagerness and willingness to help the local community. Some bystanders noted that the foreigners seemed like locals by how dedicated they look when performing the task at hand. The wide smiles and the determination in their eyes were enough proof that they were not just helping because they are told to do so, they are doing so because of their willingness to be of any help to the community. Being made to help the community would sometimes

result in unpleasant frowns or pure annoyance but the scouts would beg to differ. They enjoy performing their duty for the community. They lived up to the expectations people had in scouts- that being the belief that scouts are always willing to help others. Every scout- not just Maldivian or Filipino- live and abide by the scout law. Scouting is not just a mere duty, it is a way of life. Helping the community is a task they are more than willing to do and are willing to do so again.

TO SECURE the smooth flow of vehicles despite the stream of commuters 6th ASEAN Jamboree bring, Traffic Management Office of Tagum City devised ways to minimize traffic and avoid road accidents. According to Ariel Bardenas,TrafficManagement Office (TMO) Supervisor of Tagum City, the main concerns they dealt to improve the traffic management in the city are the diversion of routes and the deployment of traffic enforcers around the city. “Rerouting of roads were made to lessen traffic and accidents among commuters, especially the participants of ASEAN,” said Bardenas. To monitor transportations, a number of traffic personnel are deployed. “All 127 traffic enforcers were deployed in the entire city to secure commuters’ safety,” Bardenas added. However, despite TMO’s desire to provide quality service to commuters, there are some motorists who take advantage to visitors which are not familiar with fare rate in the city. Bardenas warned drivers not to commit such act and adviced the commuters to report any road related complains through 09979804574, TMO hotline number.

BEAT THE HEAT Doctor bares ways to combat drying heat EMANUEL KING D. GACULA Correspondent

Imagine yourself barefoot on a road with muddy puddles, sharp stones, and such other debris while the heat of the sun prickles your skin causing your body temperature to rise. The road ahead is long, and all throughout, there are burning obstacles. Surviving the path may be hard, but it is, however, not impossible. Despite the rising temperature, the second day of the 6th ASEAN Jamboree pushes through, marked by the exacting challenges faced by approximately 30,000 scouts today, November 28, at Energy Park, Apokon Road, Tagum City. Mavic M. Viccaya, the outfit adviser from the local council of Nueva Viscaya stated that such exposure to heat is not an excuse for them not to do their duties as a scout. According to Maridee Sebumpan a Pediatric Resident Doctor, too much exposure to heat may cause abnormally high body temperature. Furthermore, most of the cases reported during the event was dehydration and fever for not having sufficient amount of water in the body. Here are some heat survival guides from Doctor Sebumpan to avoid the consequences of disproportionate exposure to sun: DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Dehydration occurs when more water and fluids leave the body than what enters. Drinking enough water supplies the body ample of water which maintains the body’s fluid balance. It regulates body temperature and transports nutrients throughout your system. APPLY MOISTURIZER. One common condition of heat exposure is having a dry skin. As advised by Dr. Sebumpan, applying moisturizer would be quite necessary to prevent this uncomfortable problem. Having a dry skin is also an implication of dehydration. Heat becomes one of the constant enemies the scout will have to face and overcome. Surviving the path of extreme heat may be very hard but utilizing these two tips would help you conquer and beat the heat.

MISSION: FULL STOMACHS. Volunteer cooks of the 6th Asean Scout Jamboree are preparing healthy food round the clock for the participating scouts to ensure the latter’s nutrient sufficiency and maximum energy.

As brothers we feast SARAH ELLA MARIE S. MATUGUINA Correspondent

“Scouts that dine together, succeed together.” Tagum City shows readiness at its finest as they host the 6th ASEAN Scouts Jamboree not just with regards to the organized outline of activities and the systematic setup of the venues but also with regards to the accommodation of the guests and making sure that they are well-fed. The Food Committee which is in charge of making sure that approximately 30,000 hungry scouts are catered three times a day until December 2 is spearheaded by its Chairman, Edna Quilario, who states that preparing for a huge amount of delegates is

no easy task. “We respect the diversity of cultures and traditions that is why we take into consideration the many factors that may affect what kinds of dishes we serve,” says Quilario. She also sets Muslim countries as an example wherein the values and traditions of the religion are being considered since most of their people do not eat pork. “Since this is an event where participants thrive to survive, it is important that they are nourished so we serve them foods with protein and different kinds of fruits to help replenish their energy.”

Chairman Quilario explains further. They have divided the labor to perform the many tasks in serving food to the participants. Employees were assigned to do the repacking, serving, setting up the mess hall and of course, chefs are in charge of making sure that the guests will be enjoying a palatable meal after a tiring schedule of activities. At around 9:30 in the morning today, Nov. 28, the mess hall is already buzzing with activity as lunchtime approaches and a horde of famished scouts make their way towards the dining halls. Breakfast will be served regularly from 5:00 AM – 6:00

AM followed by lunch at 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Dinner would be from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. According to 4 Indian scouts, they want to taste more of the special Filipino delicacies and when asked about last night’s meal, they expressed how they find the beef very tasty. “The food here is different yet very delicious. They say the duck egg (balut) is also delicious.” Adds one of the four foreign delegates. At the end of the day, it’s not just the accomplishments of the camp that counts but also the sense of brotherhood shared in the form of eating a hearty meal at the dinner table.

Indonesian scouts guide in mastering emergency rescue to save lives

CATHY JANE FLORIDA & MAEGAN FAYE E. RACACHO Correspondent

It is an immense challenge for the Indonesians to practice water safety measures by adapting the new environment they are in and the people they have encountered. With the aftermath of calamities they have experienced such as floods and tsunamis, the knowledge they grabbed in saving lives pushed them to help and protect one’s life. For Ade Irwansyah, an Indonesian adult, water safety is beneficial since everybody loves water and in order to enjoy water activities, a scout should be ready especially when someone is

drowning and he is in need for help. “Going back to the time when flood occurred in our community, I became a rescuer,”Irwansyah said, “that’s the time I realized how important basic life support is.” Under the sizzling heat of the sun, the Indonesian scouts proved that it is not a hindrance for them to learn eagerly about the water safety measures. There might be a slight barrier to the language between them and the lecturer, still they are trying their best to communicate and understand the topic for them to easily complete their voyage in scouting.

“Though we are too young to handle rescuing someone, yet we are determined to assist and help since it is our will as a scout,” Indonesian scout Dizky Haziran said, bringing the spirit of a scout. Gone were the days when disregarding duties are their usual routine. After the wisdom blown upon their minds, total service marked in their hearts in saving thousandths of lives in the future. Truly, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management team of Tagum City helped the scouts to let ignorance in water rescue gone.

TO THE RESCUE. Indonesian Scouts show off their newly learned life-saving techniques in one of the activities in the DRRM module of the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree.

6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree Logo: Mirroring the Pride of Scouting REYNA GRACE A. TAGALICOD Correspondent

Every insignia sewed in uniforms signifies tales of fulfilment, of bravery, and of endurance. Hence, scouting delineates the essence of genuine pride of brotherhood. In addition, the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree’s logo discloses another story to acquaint everyone about the premium price of scouting. This year’s logo denominates the ASEAN scouts pledge of solidarity towards their allegiance towards the treaty. For the record, the ASEAN Scout Jamboree has been on the stream for 6 years and initiated its kick-off in the same ground for this year’s jamboree. Presently, Philippines rekindles the spirit it has possessed way back December 23, 1993-January 4, 1994 to commence the country’s chairmanship of the ASEAN’s golden anniversary. The 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree being considered as the greatest event for the scouts in the region made emphasis on people, purpose, and passion

as cornerstones in reaching the brink of success. The ASEAN scout logo for this year’s event depicted the 10 countries of the ASEAN community; moreover, it displays the solidarity of the allegiance among all members, the advancement in all aspects of one and all, and the embracement of inclusive peace for everybody. The detail on the center is the ASEAN Scouts Association for Regional Cooperation logo which draws unity of all members in upholding the common goal of scouting which is to be in service to God, country, and self. The Philippine flag-colored flames which overhead the logo

symbolizes the three pillars which braced the ASEAN. Generically, the logo represents a sanctuary which welcomes the entire world in the celebration of the 6th ASEAN Jamboree. The official logo was conceptualized and made into print by Scout c (Entry No. 17-036, Philippines) who earned triumph during the logo making contest constituted by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the ASEAN Scout Association for Regional Co-operation. He is a stout scout from the Nueva Ecija Council who has justified how scouts are perceptive and artistically inclined. Scouting is more than being concern. The logo

revitalizes the essentiality of growth and stability which has composed the theme for this year’s ASEAN Scout Jamboree. Scouting is being involved in all ways possible—in sustaining the 3 pillars of scouting and providing inclusive peace among nations and building a united community to generate securely progressive tomorrow.

MIND TRAFFIC The answers to your queries on the Subcamp names JEZZA MEH N. MAGHAMIL Correspondent

The 25-hectare Energy Park found in the bosom of the Palm City and now the Scouting Capital of the Philippines, Tagum City, is once again being crowded as it housed thousands of scouts from the 121 Local Councils of the Boy Scout of the Philippines and the international scouts from the member countries of the ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific Region for the 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree. This is the second time that the Philippines hosted the same event since its first hosting way back 1993 at Mt. Makiling. The National and Local Organizing Committee of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines arranged the contingents through dividing them in different subcamps. These scouts are bringing the banner of the subcamps named after the identified UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the different participating countries. Let us get to know more of the Subcamp names.

SUBCAMP 1 (KAMPONG AYER) Kampong Ayer is the world’s largest water village built along the banks of Brunei river. It homes over 30,000 Bruneians, which represents roughly 10% of the country’s total population, who prefer the lifestyle in the water village as a residency for it already has its own schools, churches and even police station. It is situated in the heart of the capital city of Brunei, Bandar Seri, and is considered as an important landmark and trade centre in the country. SCOUT HACK

Staying Fit, Keeping Alert RHODORA JOY LUMANOG Correspondent

Singing rain, rain go away or doing the sun dance will not stop the rain. Sudden downpour and light drizzle with scorching heat of the sun could pose real danger to one’s health. One must guard themselves to stay in peak health condition and free from any illnesses. With the fast changing weather patterns and the scouting activities progresses, here are some of the things to remember to make the most out of the remaining days: Stay hydrated. Water is the best way to keep hydrated since more than half of our body is made up of it. So, drink plenty of clean water, fruit juices and other healthy drinks. Staying hydrated also will prevent you from headache and dizziness.

Proper gear. Make umbrellas, hats or caps, raincoats, sweaters, jackets with hood and rubber boots part of your day-to-day get up. Having them will not just add glam to your outfit but will also protect you from unexpected changes of weather condition.

Healthy diet. We are what we eat. The most inexpensive way to protect yourself is through the food you eat. Eating a balance diet will refreshes and boosts your immune system. Don’t forget also to take some multivitamins and food supplements to increase your immune system’s line of defense.

Clean surroundings. A filthy surrounding is the best breeding area of viruses and bacteria. So, maintain a clutter and rubbish free place to avoid the spread of maladies especially those waterborne diseases.

Safety. Precautions must be observed all the time; avoid staying, walking or playing under the rain. Do not wade through the puddles also especially with your bare feet to avoid the getting some waterrelated diseases like leptospirosis which finds its way through the body from the feet.

While away from your comfort zones and luxury of your own homes, being a scout does not only embody the 12 points of the Scout Law but above all always think with the end in mind --- to keep physically fit all the time.
