POLAR RESEARCH STATION ANTARCTIC ICE CORE SHEET RESEARCH STATION (2016-17)
THE ICE-CORE RESEARCH STATION IN ATARCTIC HAS BEEN PROPOSED ON THE BIOMIMICRY OF THE MODULAR CRYSTALISATION OF ICE. THE STATION ADAPTS TO THE COLD SURROUNDINGS OF THE ANTARCTIC AND PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND LIVING SPACE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
STUDIO PROJECTS
| 13
14 | STUDIO PROJECTS
CONCEPT & FORM EVOLUTION THE CONCEPT HAS BEEN DERIVED FROM THE CRYOBIOLOGICAL STUDY OF ICE CORE SHEETS. THE MODULAR COMBINATION OF THE MOLECULES TO FORM A CRYSTAL EVOLVED THE FORM FOR THE WORKING SPACE OF THE RESEARCH CENTRE.

PASSIVE SOLAR GAIN
WATER HEATING SYSTEM
PROBABLY THE MOST REMARKABLE PROPERTIES OF STATION IS THAT NEEDS NO FORM OF HEATING TO KEEP ITS OCCUPANTS WARM, AS THEY WORK AND LIVE ONE OF THE COLDEST ENVIRONMENTS ON EARTH. THE STATION MAINTAINS ITS INTERNAL TEMPERATURES USING ONLY INCOMING SUNLIGHT AND THE HEAT PRODUCED BY HUMAN BEINGS AND THE STATION'S ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES.
THE STATION IS EQUIPPED WITH THERMAL SOLAR PANELS IN ADDITION TO THE PHOTOVOLTAIC ONES. UNLIKE THEIR COUNTERPARTS, THESE DO NOT TRANSFORM SOLAR RADIATION INTO ELECTRICITY, BUT IN HEAT. LINKED TO THE WATER SYSTEM, IT ALLOWS THE VARIOUS TEAM MEMBERS TO TAKE WARM SHOWERS WHILE AT THE STATION.

DESIGN CONCEPT TECHNOLOGY & INCREASING URBANISATION HAS BEGUN TO CHANGE OUR SPECIES’ LONG-STANDING ENGAGEMENTS & EXPERIENCES WITH NATURE. THE PRIME CONCEPT IS TO ASSOCIATE PEOPLE WITH NATURE AND CREATE EXPERIENCES THAT TAKES THEM BACK INTO THE WILD AND ENABLE THEM TO RELISH THE MYSTIC AURA. THE DESIGN IS SENSIBLY FABRICATED AROUND THE NATURE WITH MINIMUM INTERFERENCE TO THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE WHILE ACHIEVING LOW COST AND SELF-SUSTAINABILITY. THE IDEA HERE IS TO GENERATE REVENUE FOR LOCALS, GATHER TOURISTS, CREATE PEACEFUL AMBIENCE IN THE REGION AND ALSO, TO CREATE A SPACE WHERE ONE CAN ENJOY, HAVE FUN.
MATERIAL SELECTION
REMINERALIZING EARTH RAINWATER HARVESTING
ALL THE MATERIALS TO BE USED IN CONSTRUCTION IS AVAILABLE NEAR THE SITE ONLY, MAINLY CONSISTING OF ROCKS, STONES & WOOD. ALSO, BAMBOO WILL BE USED WHICH IS FOUND IN NEARBY FORESTS.
SITE SOIL IS INFERTILE BUT ORGANIC CONTENT IS PRETTY HIGH, TO REMINERALISE THE LAND LIME-DUST IS TO BE MIXED , FURTHERMORE ORGANISMS LIKE FUNGI, EARTHWORMS ETC. WILL ALSO HELP TO MAKE THE SOIL FERTILE.
PASSIVE RAINWATER HARVESTING TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED THAT IS LOW MAINTAINCE, COST EFFECTIVE, EASY TO BUILD. TO STOP SOIL EROSION, EARTHWORK AND CONTOURING WILL BE DONE TO THE SITE.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
PREVENTING SURFACE RUNOFF
DESIGN FOR BIRDS
FRENCH DRAIN IS A TRENCH FILLED WITH GRAVEL OR ROCK AND CONTAINING A PERFORATED PIPE THAT REDIRECTS SURFACE WATER AND GROUNDWATER AWAY FROM AN AREA. IT WILL BE USED TO STOP WATER FROM ACCUMULATING AT THE SITE AND ALSO, HARVESTING WATER AND LATER TO BE USED FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES. TO STOP EROSION AND SURFACE RUNOFF ON THE SITE, RETAINING WALLS ARE TO BE ERECTED.
DIFFERENT SPECIES OF BIRDS HAVE DIFFERENT TYPE OF DIETS, SOME ARE INSECTIVOROUS WHILE SOME ARE HERBIVOROUS. SHRUBS AND INSECTS NOT ONLY WILL SERVE AS FOOD FOR THESE BIRDS BUT ALSO WILL FERTILE THE SOIL AND REMINERALISE IT. THE WATER-SPOTS WILL USE THE HARVESTED WATER AND SMALL SPOTS WILL BE CREATED THAT WILL CATER TO SERVICES OF BIRDS AND BRING THEM OUT IN THE OPEN, TO THE TOURISTS.
BIRD HABITAT NECESSITIES
SITE PLAN (PROPOSED)
i
MANY BIRDS ARE INSECT EATERS, BUT WILL SUPPLEMENT THEIR DIET WITH NUTS, SEEDS, FRUIT, OR NECTAR, DEPENDING ON THE SPECIES. INCREASE THE ARRAY OF FOODS OFFERED WILL INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF BIRDS ATTRACTED. NOTHING BEATS NATURAL, NATIVE VEGETATION TO FEED THE BIRDS OF THE AREA. SO PLANT A VARIETY OF NATIVE PLANTS AND IN A COMBINATION THAT SUPPLIES FOOD YEAR-ROUND. FOLLOWING IS A LIST TO GET THE PROCESS STARTED.
INFORMATION ZONE RECREATION ZONE MEDITATION ZONE PLANTATION ZONE
BIRDS BINSAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY HAS OVER 200 SPECIES OF BIRDS AND MANY BUTTERFLIES IN THE WILD. MOST OF THEM ARE HIDDEN IN WILD, TO BRING THEM ON THE SITE, WATER-POINTS AND SOME GRAIN-SPOTS WILL BE THERE SO THAT THEY CAME OUTSIDE AND ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE FOR THE TOURISTS AND DISPLAY BALANCING ACT BETWEEN NATURE AND PEOPLE.
