‘ETERNALLY A STUDENT IN THE BIJLMER' Whilst cycling towards a beautiful sunset, I was approached by a young lady who asked me to stop. It was then that I saw the group of people huddled around a camera stand. A man cycled towards me, with a cameraman in close pursuit. I had inadvertently arrived on a film set. Director Michiel ten Horn was busy shooting for a flick that focuses on the life of a ‘perpetual student’, and he had chosen the Bijlmer as its setting. It is true that recently, Amsterdam Zuidoost’s streets have provided the backdrop for many movies, though something that may often be overlooked is the huge part that our district plays in the life of a student. You need only look at the huge increase in the area’s energetic, dynamic vibe to know that this is a happening district which breathes opportunity and offers something for everyone. The fact that young people are more positive than ever about the image of Amsterdam Zuidoost is something that we are proud of and want to build on. For example, the successful refurbishment of Hoekenrode has resulted in a beautiful square with bustling terraces. Our aim, therefore, is to make sure this district will remain as lively and attractive as it is now. Liveliness can be found in many places around Zuidoost, for example at the Spinozacampus. Where else in Amsterdam is it possible to
sunbathe or play football on a large lawn right in front of your own house? Or have a drink in one of the hidden bars and cafes which you can find in the the Grubbehoeve, Gouden Leeuw and Groenhoven flats. In short, ...when you are a student and you want to enjoy yourself, Zuidoost has it all. Unfortunately, life as an eternal student, as depicted in Michiel ten Horns film, is no longer an option in this day and age. I wish you succesful student days, set in the sunniest part of Amsterdam. SMALL STUDENT VILLAGE It’s five o’clock in the afternoon, and somewhat shakily I rise to my feet and stumble away from the wooden picnic table where my neighbours are seated. Oops! Pina Coladas + warm weather = not a good mix since I still have some revising to do. I wish I had finished my assignment already. Oh well, whether you go out for drinks, or get involved in an impromptu barbecue - it’s all too easy to get distracted at the Spinozacampus, where I’ve been living for two years now. The Spinozacampus with its seven hundred homes has become a small student village in the center of the Bijlmer. Though I’m still met with worried expressions when I tell people I live in the Bijlmer, for me it’s definitely the place to be. The melting pot of various cultures, the hustle and bustle of the market at the Anton de Komplein, the shopping center Amsterdamse Poort where youmay buy nearly anything your heart desires and the ArenA Boulevard where there is always something to do. I think it’s great! In addition, it is also very nice to have my own space complete
with bathroom and kitchen. Though Though it may be lonely at times, there is plenty of social interaction on the Spinozacampus. On a summer day, there are many people outside studying, sunbathing, barbecueing and having fun. Additionally the activities committee organises lots of campus events which are ideal for getting to know your neighbours better. Overall, in my eyes is Zuidoost offers diversity and a good and lively atmosphere. And I’m sure that you, visitors and (future) inhabitants of Amsterdam Zuidoost, will agree with me! ‘ MY VIDEOS ARE RECOGNISABLE TO EVERYBODY’ 6 | Amsterdam Zuidoost
INTERVIEW
Entertainer and rapper Défano Holwijn (21) was proclaimed this year’s ‘Facebook hit of Zuidoost’, by Het Parool. And rightly so! Almost daily he entertains over 140,000 followers with hilarious videos in which he discusses recognisable, everyday topics. During the interview for ZO! Studying it became obvious that cheerful Défano is wildly popular with the public in real life as well!
“Are you gonna make another shortie tonight?” two girls on bicycles call out to Défano.During the photo shoot another fan calls out to him and Défano cheerfully replies. We talk to him at De Smeltkroes, a Surinamese-Javanese restaurant on the Bijlmerdreef where he likes to dine. Enjoying a Dawet, a typically Surinamese coconut milk drink, he talks about his neighbourhood Nieuw Grunder, which is within walking distance. He has been living in this district for seven years with his parents and younger brother. “I’ve lived my whole life in Zuidoost and it suits me very well. I like to spend my time in this neighbourhood, at home with friends or at the communitycenter NoLIMIT. And De Smeltkroes is a great place to eat and hang out in.”
number of followers continues to grow each day, it’s unbelievable!”
BIGGEST HIT IN THE NETHERLANDS
Also ‘typically Défano’ are the popular shorties he posts: short, funny summaries on a World Cup match or an episode of GTST. For inspiration he taps from his own experiences. “But every now and then my brother or friends say something like, ‘hey, you should really make a movie clip about this’.” Défano goes on to give an example. “What struck me just now was the question, why do buses and subway trains always have the air conditioning switched off during summer? It just doesn’t make sense doing that when it’s so hot! Those are the things that I have to share. Often they are not even meant to be funny, so much as just everyday observations that people can relate to.”
Défano started posting videos way back when Hyves was hot and happening. “Back then I got a lot of positive feedback, but things really began to take off with Keek, an app that allows you to post. Before I knew it, I had become the biggest hit in the Netherlands on that app. In May last year, I decided to continue my work on Facebook. I thought, let’s just see how it goes. First I posted movies on my own personal page. It went so well, that after just two movies I had gained a thousand online friends. Soon I had reached the maximum of five thousand connections, so I decided to make a business page. Fast Forward to now, a year later, the
A BIT OF SELF-MOCKERY
The secret behind his success? “I think it is mostly to do with timing: being in the right place at the right time. Picking recognisable topics and a little bit of self-mockery is also important. This is often recognized in my videos which is why many people find them funny. I got a lot of nice comments on ‘Ten things from from a man’s life’. Some people responded saying: ‘Yeah well, sometimes it’s hard to be a man.’ I was amused by that. Also, I’m often told that I say out loud what others are merely thinking. I like that, I’m kind of an interpreter, as it were. “

‘I AM KIND OF AN
INTERPRETER’ ALL IN ONE Last year, Défano made an appearance on X Factor. “There was a scout from X Factor who saw me on YouTube. He kept asking if I wanted to join, so eventually, I did.. It was a great experience. I still rap but now my Facebook page has become so time consuming that rapping has to take a a back seat, for now. Though it actually seems the perfect time to broadcast my music to my followers, so that will definitely happen soon’’. Because Défano likes to combine entertainment with making music, he enjoys being an MC. “I’m hard-host MC with Young

DREAM Apart from his activities on Facebook, Défano is also working on the internet series HASHTAGDIEBOYS. “This is the ultimate guide for young people about anything and everything. For example, how to behave when you’re in a club, or what to do when you’re heartbroken. The six of us try to put a funny slant on these things and not take them too seriously.” Défano’s big dream is to become a TV host. “I hope it works out, it’s my childhood dream. I would love to have my own show, but I’ll see what comes my way. I want to finish school first. After the summer I’ll be studying Journalism in Utrecht, so I’ll go and check that out!”

ZO! U P-TO - DAT E HOEKENRODE Wow, what a difference! The formerly rather desolate and windy square between Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station and shopping center Amsterdamse Poort has had a massive make-over. Surrounded by great restaurants, coffee places and bars, Hoekenrode has turned into one big lively terrace. Pop into Lebkov, East Harbour, Marmaris or the Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam. Aside from enjoying good food and a drink, you might score an internship or job here: the perfect blend of business and pleasure!
METRO MOVIES On Friday, September 12th you might have been lucky enough to have been wandering through Bullewijk underground station (Heesterveld exit). In that case, you must have stumbled upon the second edition of Metro Movies: a free short film festival, which had chosen ‘luck’ as its theme. From 5pm to 11pm the empty space under the subway station (near Inter) featured a variety of short films, music and much more! Check www.metromovies.nl for more info.

ARE YOU COMING TO DIEMEN ZUID Lange Frans already wrote a rap about it and you’ll find it on the doorstep of Zuidoost. Among other things, the brand new Campus Diemen Zuid boasts its ‘own’ gym, pizzeria and laundry facilities. With the new Grand Café Berlin and the recently opened wine bar Vinvino, the campus has become attractive and hip certainly worth checking out! www.campusdiemenzuid.nl
SECOND FASE SPINOZACAMPUS Last year the Spinozacampus, with over 700 student homes and loads of facilities and amenities, was officially opened. Because of its big success there are plans to expand the campus, adding 550 more student homes in the course of 2015. www.duwo.nl
CULINARY HOTSPOT Like it or not, we’ll have to wait just a little while until 2015 for World of Food to open its doors right next to the Spinozacampus. A delicious selection of world cuisine coming from local providers and brought together beneath the roof of an old renovated garage, how cool
does that sound? And did you know that the one-time student bar Uilenstede also managed to secure a place in World of Food? There’s no better place to plonk down and enjoy a beer after a long day of studying than their terrace. We can’t wait till next year! www.worldoffoodamsterdam.nl

‘IT’S SO MUCH FUN HERE’ THE IMAGE OF ZUIDOOST IS BETTER THAN EVER The council did a new survey, and guess what? Students are very satisfied with this beautiful part of Amsterdam! Well known hotspots in the Arenapoort and the many shops in Amsterdamse Poort get a lot of appreciation, along with the excellent accessibility and a wide range of available housing. We took to the streets and checked your opinions.
ESTHER FARBER (19) 2nd year studying Accounting at ROC “I live at the Spinoza campus on the Dennenrodepad, which is just around the corner from my school. It’s super close, in other words! Every morning all students form one big group on their walk to the ROC and HvA. My studio on campus feels like a holiday home. The atmosphere among the students is good; everyone is really nice. There’s always something fun going on on Fridays and Saturdays. I am often invited to people’s homes, where we we listen to music. And if I’m broke I’ll just invite myself to a friend’s place. “I’ll just say, ‘you’re having me over for diner tonight!’” 12 | Amsterdam Zuidoost
WENDELL RAVENBERG (19), EMANUEL HAGOS (20), BRYAN WANGA (22) L.T.R
All 2nd year studying Junior Account Management at ROC Wendell (lives with his parents in Gein): “Here in Zuidoost we live outside. There is always something happening here: the Kwaku Summer Festival, markets in De Poort, playing football in the Bijlmerpark. I live on a five minute walk from the Gaasperplas and that’s where we hang out in the summer, having barbecues and stuff. We think it’s a pity that many people associate Zuidoost with crime. It isn’t any worse here, compared to other big cities. On the contrary: everyone is very open minded here!”
PIM THEWISSEN (28) MIRJAM KOENEN (25) 6th year and 4th year Medicine students at the University of Amsterdam Pim and Miriam share a two-room apartment in Echtenstein. “We like living here; it’s close to the AMC”, says Pim. Miriam chips in, I really enjoy strolling through the Shopperhal, a kind of indoor market, near Bijlmerplein. They sell the best food and all kinds of fun (and cheap!) gadgets.”
SPOTTED
GIJS TIMMER (20), YVETTE VAN CALCAR (20) Both 1st year International Business Management (IBM) students at HvA/HES Yvette: “We’re in the same class and that’s how we know each other. I am originally from Singapore and I live at Fraijlemaborg, with a number of other foreign students. I’ts a perfect location, being right around the corner from the ArenA. I like going to concerts, so it’s great that Ziggo Dome and HMH are so nearby. Also, I enjoy shopping here; especially when there’s a sale at H&M”. Gijs (lives in Amere): but explains why he loves the area so much “I like going to AJAX matches. And Optisport, at the Bijlmer Sportscentrum, is a nice gym to go to.”
SOPHIE SENSENHAUER FROM GERMANY (20), ORIMIJA ZIULYTE FROM LITHUANIA (18) L.T.R
1st year International Business and Language (IBL) students at HvA/HES Orimija “We both wanted to study abroad, that was for sure. And we always found Amsterdam to be a great city. It seemed logical to choose the place first and then decide on the course to study! Sophie lives in Huizen and I live in Reigersbos. It’s right on the doorstep of Gaasperpark: the perfect place to chill!” Sophie: “In Daalwijk there are always great student parties. And the chicken burger at Ernos Lunchroom at Bijlmerplein is divine.“
ADNAN ALGOE A.K.A. DJ ATTI (18) Retail studies, level 2 at the ROC “I was born and raised in Zuidoost: it’s so much fun here! And from Ganzenhoef I usually take the bus to school. There are plenty of things to do here, but you should also look for ways to enjoy yourself with your friends. Like working out together at Fit For Free or playing football outside. Through my work as a DJ I know a lot of people. I recently played at Open Air and Kwaku Summer Festival, but also at NoLIMIT or at random house parties. I play hip hop, house, latin house, afrobeat. All kinds of stuff really!”

HEY, WHAT’S UP? TWO STUDENTS TALK ABOUT THEIR WORK AT A COMMUNITY CENTER
HOW DID YOU WIND UP ANANSI AND NOLIMIT? “Two years ago I started work as a volunteer. Apparently they thought I did well because I still work here, only now I get paid for it.”
WHAT DOES YOUR WORK ENTAIL? “At Anansi, I am occasionally there to install sound mixing or music equipment, ensuring that all facilities are ready for events. At NoLIMIT, where I spend most of my time, I mostly work as an administrator and I bear the responsibility for the premises. As with Anansi, I have to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that customers are satisfied.”
ANY TIPS FOR GOING OUT? “I would like to invite everyone to pop in at our place during Chill Zone on Thursday. There are so many young people that it makes it a great place to meet up. Besides, we organize loads of fun activities in the fields of dance, theatre, whatever. “NoLIMIT Live,” the stage where talented youngsters perform all kinds of acts, is something I also recommend. And to top it all off, the live music events with a variety of great artists are definitely worth a visit.”

HOW DID YOU WIND UP AT ANANSI AND NOLIMIT? “I did two internships here during junior college. The first year consisted of a traineeship and during the second year I was allowed to supervise productions and new trainees. What’s nice about NoLIMIT are its various activities. You really are part of a hodgepodge of creative expression: theatre, dancing, singing, musicians, debates, DJs. There is even a recording studio available”.
WHAT DOES YOUR WORK ENTAIL? “This year, as co-coördinator for Africa’s Epic Sound, I worked for the Open Air festival for the third time. I was responsible for the preparation, production making sure things ran smoothly during the day. I had such a great time! I did

ANY TIPS FOR GOING OUT? “I think students always enjoy parties at home. So invite your friends and get comfortable dancing and chatting with each other. As of September, NoLIMIT offers creative workshops such as Write About Now or Visual Arts. BLNDR, a youth event that is held every three months by co-developers, is also very nice. Or go for a picnic at the Gaasperplas or the Bijlmerpark. And Hoekenrode has many nice cafes boasting a terrace.“

The place that impressed me the most this year is the Sports Hall Gaasperdam. Do not judge a book by its cover; it is run by friendly volunteers, and there is a wide range of sports that you can practice here in the hall, such as Basketball, Volleyball and Badminton, but also more exotic sports like Capoeira. In addition to the regular classes, they also organize special events such as wheelchair hockey and a fighting sports gala.

… That’s what you will hear a lot when you are in Zuidoost... get used to it! I was born and raised in Holendrecht, Amsterdam Zuidoost. For me, studying in my home town was a priority, moving away For entrepreneurial students, Zuidoost proves to seemed illogical. My advice if you want to get to know your neighbourhood better: join in! There is no doubt that this district is developing, there’s so much going on here. especially for students and young professionals. FOOD
GOOD FOOD Zuidoost is all about good food. With more than 140 different nationalities Zuidoost is diversity rich, you have an enormous selection here! Leave your pans in your kitchen cupboard and, get out and try something new!
In Surinamese-Javanese restaurant De Smeltkroes you can have a hot meal with noodles and chicken for just €6.25. A bowl of rice here costs only €1.50! Ordering over the phone is also possible. You can get a sandwich for lunch at Tjin’s exotische broodjes. Here you can order something different from your average cheese sandwich: a pom sandwich, for instance, for only €3. Enjoy a two-course menu in Community Centre Bonte Kraai (Tuesday and Thursday) and Community Centre Gein (on Monday) for only €5. On a serious cash diet? At BackWerk you can eat a sandwich or croissant for less than €2. If you need replenishing whilst shopping next lunchtime, try out Toko Kaihing.According to many it is ‘the best toko of Zuidoost’! And of course don’t forget to visit Bagels & Beans and all the eateries in and around Bijlmerplein, like Kam Yin, for example. On a slightly larger budget? At Marmaris Grill
& Pizza you can try the tastiest meat in town
alongside a fine Turkish wine or choose from a large selection of coffee specialties. At Meram Lounge restaurant on Bijlmerdreef you can take your pick from a range of Turkish specialties. Sütlaç for example:, a delicious rice pudding, or künefe, angel hair with mozzarella in sweet honey syrup. Imagine yourself on a tropical island among the tall bamboo plants at Restaurant JinSo on the ArenA Boulevard. Do you prefer a rustic menu? Then Boerderij Langerlust offers an affordable three-course meal!

RICK VAN WICHEN (22) 1st year IBL at the HvA/HES
“I live in a dorm, between Reigersbos and Gein, where we enjoy drinking beer on or own roof terrace! We always buy our drinks from C1000 and Jumbo, which are just around the corner. I’m half Indian and even though I spend some time in our kitchen, one of the big perks of Zuidoost is certainly all the tasty takeaways: African, Surinamese, Indonesian, you name it!” ZO! TIPS FOR GETTING A SUCCESSFUL INTERNSHIP! Nowadays, it’s not only regular jobs you have to apply for; it’s required for internships as well. These two students found the internships of their dreams.
From September Sjoerd Vermaak (20) will be doing his internship at Universal Music Group, one of the largest record companies in the world. The way he secured such an incredible opportunity. Through networking activities. “To wind up at Universal I searched for people who had connections with the company. I introduced myself to the right people and then one thing led to another.”
TIP FROM SJOERD “Present yourself in a unique way that attracks the attention of a large company. For example, I didn’t write a letter, but made an entire magazine instead.” Jurian de Cocq of Delwijnen (21) did an internship at Sogeti Netherlands, an international ICT company, which also has an office based in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Jurian’s route to succes: visit a company discovery day on behalf of your course.“I got in touch with Sogeti during a company discovery day. I had to do a lot of tests before I was hired. I graduated with high marks, and got an offer to stay on.”

SURIÈRE LAKE (28) 4th year Business Administration at HvA/HES “I live in the North district, so I commute to school by car. As glamourous as that may seem, I have to work hard for it! In addition to my studies I have a job at the Tax Office. I work there for about three to four days a week. To students looking for a job on the side, I reccomend visiting an employment agency. In my experience, it’s always easier to find work through them.“
TIP FROM JURIAN “Dress well, know your purpose and be aware of your added value to a company.”
WORK
DID YOU KNOW... THERE ARE LOADS OF INTERESTING COMPANIES AT ZUIDOOST TO WORK OR DO WORK EXPERIENCES AT? Living off more than peanut butter and bread?
Besides studying, you’ll like to go out to dine or grab a terrace every now and then. Unfortunately, life is pretty expensive for a student. Are you looking for a job? Then check out these three options: 1. CALL CENTRE EMPLOYEE It may sound boring, but with your salary as a call centre agent, you’ll just laugh at everyone. Plus, you can plan your own shifts. (eight to twelve euros net per hour) 2. BAR STAFF / RESTAURANT STAFF If night life’s your thing, this is the job for you! But try to avoid going to class with a massive hangover the day after. (six to eight euros net per hour, plus tips) 3. CASHIER / SHOP EMPLOYEE As a cashier you don’t earn a lot, but you do get loads of new contacts through customers and colleagues. And most of the time you’re guaranteed a fixed hourly rate and a fixed number of hours. (five to seven euros net per hour)

INTERVIEW
ROTJOCH
‘ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE AS LONG AS YOU KEEP BELIEVING IN IT!’
Angelo Diop (32), better known as Rotjoch, grew up in the heart of the Bijlmer and is the creator of the wildly popular online platform 101Barz from BNN. Although he hasn’t had an easy childhood, he is living proof that you can make any dream come true.
YOU GREW UP IN ZUIDOOST, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? “I actually lived everywhere. In the eighties we lived in the flats that are nearly all demolished now and from there we moved to Holendrecht where we lived for twelve years. I lived in a neighbourhood where there was a lot of poverty and it was the same for our family. Yet I have great memories of that time; As a child I always played outside, racing around on my BMX.“
DID HIPHOP PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE AT THAT TIME? “When I was really young, I listened to Michael Jackson all the time. After that I got more and more involved in hip-hop. Occasionally I rapped but producing was the thing I really enjoyed doing. I did everything in my room, which pissed off our neighbours every now and then. At my thirteenth birthday I created my
alias ‘Rotjoch’. My mother called me that a few times, and I thought it was a cool rap name.”
HOW DO YOU MAKE A LIVING PLAYING HIP-HOP? “On my 25th birthday I got the chance to work as a novice TV maker and I thought of the concept 101Barz. I did everything myself:from building my own sets to hosting the show. At one time I had 100,000 views and so it was time to hire an trainee. And to top it off, we went on to win the Multimedia Award of the public broadcaster in 2009. That was a great compliment.”
YOUR ADVICE TO STUDENTS? “That’s easy: basically nothing is too large, you can make all your dreams come true. If you believe in something, you have to follow your heart and give it your very best, then you have the best chance of success. There are plenty of young guys who, like me, have grown up in a deprived area, but are now succesful. Just look at Mr. probz or DJ Chuckie. I do what I’m good at and want to continue developing myself. Fortunately, I always have people around me who support me and understand my vision.” CHECK IT OUT! 101BARZ.BNN.NL
