in De Poort!
Yes! We can look forward again to warm rays of sunshine, numerous terraces and most importantly for fashionistas: spring is a really good reason to visit Amsterdamse Poort and to get your wardrobe ready for the new season! In this edition we have made a handy list of the spring fashion trends for you to help you shine in style. But glorious spring is more than just the anticipation of shopping fun. What about all the great festivals and events that are lined up? De Poort also has plenty of entertainment to offer in the coming months: from Super Win campaigns to live entertainment. Do you know what you are going to do this summer? In the Spotted section we asked visitors to De Poort about their plans. Tip: take a trip around the world in the Shopperhal and be inspired by the different cultures and delicious food. And save yourself an expensive ticket to the other side of the world! DILAN YURDAKUL
‘THERE ARE STILL SO MANY STORIES TO TELL’ 4
She sweeps into our sitting rooms every working day as the short-tempered policewoman Aysen, she stars on the stage in her own theatre shows and also teaches at the gym three times a week. Jill-of-all-trades Dilan Yurdakul (24) is bursting with drive, dreams and ambition.

Since 2012 Dilan plays the tough Aysen in the long-running Dutch soap Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden (GTST). She finds it hard to relate to the character. “Aysen is so different from me that it’s a real challenge to play her. Luckily, she’s become nicer recently. The ice queen has melted slightly since finding the love of her life. And it’s fun to see that side of her. Although she mustn’t become a housewife of course.” Unravel In any case, Dilan hasn’t got much time for housekeeping in real life. She not only appears in front of the camera, she’s also a theatre producer. When she was just 20, Dilan starred on stage in her own solo show. She wrote, produced and played Confessions of a young girl, based on Proust’s short story of the same name. “In my final year at primary school, during the end-of-school musical, I fell in love with the theatre, which is a bit of a cliché. Although I was shy, I thought it was fantastic. At secondary school I continued acting at the youth theatre. That’s where I discovered that I not only liked acting but also writing and creating things myself. You are given the opportunity to unravel a part to its core and think about one sentence for hours, which is the opposite of the high pace at GTST. But it’s this combination that makes it so much fun.”
Kickboxing and working out When Dilan is not in the studio or in the theatre, you’re likely to find her in the gym. This is where she teaches three times a week. “Since I was sixteen I’ve been teaching Body Pump, Total Body Workout and Body Shape classes. In addition, I do kickboxing and lift weights three times a week. After a long day shooting, I love to sweat it all out at the gym. Besides, without sports I would never have got to where I am now. It not only makes you tougher physically but also mentally.” Amsterdamse Poort around the corner Acting, producing theatre, working out.... where does Dilan find the time? “It’s a question of planning. For example, I often go shopping at Amsterdamse Poort. The shopping centre is just around the corner from the GTST studios. Whenever I have an hour off during a day’s shooting, I walk over. It’s a great shopping centre where you can find everything you need. It’s ideal!”
‘De Poort is just around the corner from the studios’ Stories on the street One thing is sure, we haven’t heard the last of Dilan. What are her dreams for the future? “There are still so many stories I’d like to tell, preferably on the big screen. All the films in the cinema nowadays resemble each other. That should change. I want to bring greater diversity. For example, a film like Black, which is about street gangs in Brussels, is so raw and real. The most beautiful stories can be found right there, on the street.”

The South East Centre for Visual Arts (CBK Zuidoost) caters to art lovers far and wide. Here art can be admired, borrowed, made and talked about. CBK Zuidoost offers an exhibition room of contemporary art with intercultural accents. Valerie and Linda have lunch once a week at URBAN SALAD. “We work at Adidas around the corner and we like to have lunch together. They do great salads here that are healthy because they aren’t too rich,” says Valerie. Linda: “There are lots of places to eat around here, but for a healthy lunch we especially like to come to Urban Salad. We don’t like very rich food, so this is the perfect place for a fresh and healthy salad!”
At EASY FRESH FALAFEL married couple Garima and Abhinav are at a table with their friends Melissa and Swati. They all work at ING and live in Amsterdam. “You can find us at Easy Fresh Falafel every week, but we try to order something different each time. We like Indian food best, but De Poort doesn’t have any. But lentil soup, Döner sandwiches, wraps and salads are a great alternative! We always go out for lunch together, to be away from the office for a bit and to chat.” Besides Easy Fresh Falafel, the foursome also regularly visit ASIAN KITCHEN, URBAN SALAD, SUBWAY and BASILICO.

Milana (18) loves to shop and shops love Milana. This young lady is from Zuidoost, so De Poort really is her home away from home. But this busy bee does more than just shop. She has two jobs no less and is in her final year studying Social Work at the Regional Training Centre in Zuidoost. Way to go, Milana! She and her friend Elise (19), who is a student at the same school, have been chosen to go High Speed Shopping today. And shopping is what these girls do best! Meanwhile friend Orpheo (21) has joined the ladies for some moral support. They have fifty euros burning in their pocket and fifteen minutes to spend them in at least three different shops. Ready, set, go! The race kicks off at LUCARDI. Milana is dazzled by all the bling. “Maybe you should have chosen someone else, I’m really not good at making snap decisions, help!” But she manages to collect herself and chooses a yin-yang pendant at a discount of € 12.50 from € 24.99.
Time flies when you’re having fun... and it certainly does when you’re High Speed Shopping! The clock is ticking and so the girls and Orpheo decide to go into H&M. This is where Elise comes into her own. She buys lingerie for no less than € 25.00. “My boyfriend’s really going to like this.” We bet he will! The threesome only has a few minutes left. What now? Several shops are mentioned but lingerie wins the day again. HUNKEMÖLLER it is! Milana buys two pairs of underpants for only € 5.00 while Orpheo buys his mother a pair of fluffy socks for € 7.99. He has to chip in € 0.50, but his mother is more than worth it! There! High Speed Shopping is not for the faint-hearted. You need to make decisions, have the constitution of a horse, be able to do sums and possess powers of persuasion. The ladies succeeded. Oh, and thanks to Orpheo of course!

SUMMER HOT SPOT Monique expects the frozen yoghurt to score well this summer. “In summer especially, our frozen yoghurt is delicious with a topping of fresh exotic fruit.” Monique thinks that Beans has everything going for it to become a true hot spot. “We have an enthusiastic team of girls who want everyone to leave feeling satisfied and, of course, to come and visit us again!”

TAKE AWAY & STAY The colourful array of macarons in the shop window is just a taste of the many products available at Beans. Beans Amsterdam opened its doors three months ago. “Bijlmerplein didn’t yet have a coffee bar like this one,” manager Monique explains. “Here you can pop in for a coffee-to-go and a croissant on your way to the office, or sit and relax at a table with a sandwich or a coffee and cake. Everyone is welcome!”

HET VOLKSOPERAHUIS In the year that Surinam celebrates its 40 anniversary of independence from the Netherlands, the Volksoperahuis, Manoushka Zeegelaar Breeveld and Borger Breeveld collaborate to produce the play Christmas in Paramaribo. Almost half of all people of Surinamese descent live in the Netherlands. They went on to become famous football players, lawyers, politicians and theatre producers. But what does your average Dutch person actually know about Surinam? What are their perceptions of the country and its people? Christmas in Paramaribo tells the story of a Dutch theatre group with cross-border ambitions who decide to produce a play with an actress originally from Surinam and her father, who still lives in Paramaribo. It is a play in which the two countries redefine their positions.
It’s FATU’s turn on Sunday 24 April when MC, host Jeffrey Spalburg and three fellow comedians take the floor to give their strong and hilarious views on current affairs in their own, unique way.
