Discover the colours of de Poort Spring is almost here again. The trees are in leaf, the days are longer and we can put away those winter coats. The world is finally getting back its colour. Fortunately, Amsterdamse Poort is colourful all year round, but even more so in spring. There’s colour on the streets, on your plate and in your wardrobe. De Poort has something for everyone. In this edition you can read about the colourful shops of Shopperhal. Of course, there are plenty of other stores in De Poort with colourful products to brighten your day. If shopping gives you an appetite, explore the many cafes and snackbars. We share some top tips in our Food Special. We also introduce Yusuf, who tells us about his work as De Poort’s concierge and security officer. And we meet rapper Yes-R, whose music brings sunshine to the dullest day. Bring on the spring – De Poort is ready! We hope you enjoy reading this new spring edition of Meer? Magazine and look forward to seeing you again in Amsterdamse Poort, the most varied and welcoming shopping centre in the Netherlands.

‘IT FEELS GOOD TO DO IT ALL MYSELF’ Yes-R (28) began rapping at the age of sixteen and can look back on over ten successful years in the music business. His big break came with the number Leipe Mocro Flavour, which was followed by a string of other hits. Today he has his own label, Yes-R Records, a massive club hit with rap band SBMG, and is performing to full houses in the musical Hartsvrienden.

Yesser Roshdy, better known by his stage name Yes-R, grew up in east Amsterdam. He has fond memories of his childhood. “We lived in a real ‘multiculti’ neighbourhood with lots of typical old Amsterdam pubs. Seven years ago I moved to Diemen, where I live with my wife and five-year-old son. It’s a great place to escape the hectic showbiz life.” Famous cousin With Ali B in the family, it’s hardly surprising that YesR discovered rap at a young age. “I was lucky to have a cousin who is a well-known rapper. He listened to some stuff I’d written and that’s when things started to take off. He became a sort of mentor and I learned a lot from him. Later, I met Negativ, Lange Frans and Baas B, and we formed the rap group D-Men. It was Lange Frans who introduced me to the underground scene but I signed my first commercial deal with Ali, back where it all began.” Chemistry Yes-R has recorded several numbers with cousin Ali, including the hit that thrust him into the spotlights, Leipe Mocro Flavour. “Everything that we have done together has been a huge success: Rosamunde, our remix of Danny Christiaan’s hit from the Ali B Op Volle Toeren television programme and Rampeneren, for example. There’s a sort of chemistry between us.” A new team After ten years with Ali B’s management company, Yes-R took a different direction. “I wasn’t entirely happy with the strategy and decided it was the right moment to form my own team. Yes-R Records was born. Of course it’s exciting, and I really enjoy doing it all myself. The single Onbereikbaar was my comeback. More recently, the boys from SBMG and I released the club track Late Night Sex.”
‘Like a little Paramaribo’ On stage Until the end of May, Yes-R will be touring the country with the stage musical Hartsvrienden. He takes the role of narrator and shares the stage with Jim Bakkum and Guido Spek. “It’s a fantastic experience. The story is really strong and the role could have been written for me. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world!” Little Paramaribo Last but not least, we ask Yes-R whether he ever visits Amsterdamse Poort. “Only recently, as it happens. It always reminds me of a little Paramaribo. You can find fantastic Surinamese food here. I find the shopping centre welcoming and relaxed. And the Pathé cinema is the best – and cleanest – I’ve ever seen. The Bijlmer district used to be known for those huge concrete apartment buildings but there are some really nice homes being built here now. It looks great!”

UP-TO-DATE! Weekend events With spring not far away, there are some great outdoor events to look forward to. The Fair Market will be open from Friday 15 May until Sunday 17 May. The Summer Market takes place during the first weekend of July (Friday 3 to Sunday 5). And remember to visit De Poorterij between Friday 25 and Sunday 27 September. See you there!

Familiar faces in De Poort: Raffaele & Yusuf
‘Even after eight years I see new things all the time’
Yusuf Yildiz (28) has found his dream job. As concierge and security officer, he is the ‘eyes and ears’ of Amsterdamse Poort. No two days are the same. “When I arrive in the morning, I really don’t know what to expect. That’s what makes it so interesting. Even after eight years, I see new things all the time. I really enjoy working here!” Yusuf joined the security team in 2008. “We keep a high profile so that people feel safe here. We make our rounds every day and monitor the CCTV cameras. All shops have our telephone number and we are always ready to help when needed. You can find us in the security office opposite the Albert Heijn supermarket.” Last year, Yusuf also took on the role of concierge. He maintains close contact with store managers and helps when there are problems. Got a leak? Is something broken or dirty? Yusuf is your man. He doesn’t work alone, of course. Raffaele Gionti (31), responsible for cleaning and general maintenance, is another familiar face in De Poort. Together, Yusuf and Raffaele are the ‘kings of the castle’. Good communication is essential, says Yusuf. “I listen to what people have to say and we look for solutions together.” Everyone who works in the shopping centre knows Yusuf. People greet him and stop for a chat. The store managers clearly appreciate his input. “I’m their contact person and they know they can rely on me to help whatever the problem.” In this respect, Yusuf thinks of himself as something of a social worker. Store owners, managers, tenants, visitors, council officials: everyone is equal in Yusuf’s eyes. “I treat them all exactly the same. De Poort is multicultural and democratic. It makes no difference where you’re from or how big your store is, the same rules apply to everyone and I give everyone equal respect.”

Good Food! If you enjoy good food, you’ll find plenty of choice at Amsterdamse Poort. There are many outlets selling fresh fruit and vegetables: nature’s power food! Head for Badri’s Tropicals and you’ll also find Surinamese delicacies and Sweet Sranang syrup in lots of different flavours. For something really filling, try the Wednesday special at Slagerij Meester: a traditional Dutch meatball sandwich for only €2,10. At Subway, you select the fillings and staff will prepare your roll to order, exactly as you like it. Something sweet to follow? There’s plenty to choose from at Bakker Bart. Here’s another good idea: pop along to Fresh Market for a delicious salad and other groceries. Or savour a taste of Italy at Pasta di Mamma. In short, treat yourself!

Fifty euros. fifteen minutes. at least three favourite stores. That’s High Speed Shopping at Amsterdamse Poort! This time, fortune smiled on eighteen-year-old Jeanine. We asked whether she would like to spend fifteen minutes shopping on us. Not surprisingly, the answer was yes please! But the clock is ticking!
“I was planning to do a little shopping in De Poort before school and then I ran into you,” she says excitedly. The challenge is to spend the fifty euros in at least three different stores... and the time starts now! Jeanine runs to her first stop, H&M. She has been here many times before and knows her way around. She selects various items and holds each up for closer inspection. A black dress for evenings out, a casual blouse, or both? It’s hard to choose. But the clock is ticking. She eventually plumps for a green top which will go with virtually anything. The first twenty euros changes hands. She dives into NEW YORKER where her eye is caught by a black bag in the shape of a heart. The perfect accessory for any occasion. And it’s only €6,95. Jeanine quickly pays and moves on.
Opposite New Yorker is VERO MODA, another of Jeanine’s regular favourites. There is a rack of special offers and she soon finds a beautiful soft jumper marked down to only fifteen euros. It is added to the day’s haul. With €8,05 still to spend but only a couple of minutes on the clock, Jeanine heads hotfoot to TAKKO. Here she finds a pair of silver-coloured earrings with matching bracelet for just eight euros. She hands over the money just in the nick of time: her fifteen minutes are up. Jeanine has spent her entire budget, all but five cents. With her new purchases in hand, a satisfied Jeanine continues what she was doing fifteen minutes ago: a little bit of shopping!
