voorwoord

A cold winter

is coming (and that’s a good thing)

Wow, the scorching daytime temperatures and warm evenings have made Summer 2014 a great one to remember. It’s on these days that the smell of exotic food wafting through the streets, and the vendors serving ice cold refreshment ensure that Amsterdamse Poort is the place to be. The entire district has been full of people out shopping, having lunch in the sun or just soaking up the atmosphere, strolling through De Poort. The happy, warm glow of the sun and visitors has helped maintain the great ambiance. As a result, Amsterdam Zuidoost is bustling with energy, and the Amsterdamse Poort buzzes with life. It does so, too, in the winter. Because you’ll notice the same warmth and friendliness when you walk around the area’s many shops, gazing upon the most beautiful winter coats, the stylish jackets, the snug scarves and the trendy shoes. Over the following pages we have made a fine selection for you to browse though. So as you make the most of the last few glimpses of sunshine, prepare to button up and brace yourself for the approaching colder temperatures. It’s not all bad though, take solace in the knowledge that as the streets get cooler, the nice hot cups of coffee served at the new Hoekenrodeplein will feel even more ‘gezellig’! We wish you a lot of fun reading the new Autumn edition of Meer Magazine and hope to see you soon in the Amsterdamse Poort, the most versatile and friendly shopping center of The Netherlands!

interview

Ruben Ligeon

‘Giving up is not an option’ Ruben Ligeon returns for another season to the selection of Ajax. The right wing player last season also played for Jong Ajax. Meer? Magazine interviews him about his career in one of the leading Dutch football clubs. 6

As a young boy, Ruben Ligeon had already made it quite clear he was determined to become a professional football player. At five, his father made sure he got into SV Meteor in Amsterdam where he continued to excel and his talent was noticed. When he turned seven, he came to Ajax. Ruben explains, “My father could really spoil me. I was his only son. But of course, he could also be very strict at times. He was intent on letting me make my own life, though he always encouraged me.” Ajax This season, the 22 year old hopes to get as much time on the field as possible. “Of course, that is really up to me. I have to perform to get the playtime”, says the young player, who was born and raised in Amsterdam Zuidoost. He hopes to bring home the champions trophy this season. But recognises the strong challenges that lie ahead “Unfortunately, the trophy is not an easy thing to win in this league’’. Besides the known dangerous opponents, Feyenoord and PSV, Ruben believes it is important to not underestimate the other clubs in the league. “One thing is certain; there is some tough competition this season.” The ‘Poortje’ Ruben likes to shop around. “The Amsterdamse Poort is a nice place to shop”, he tells us. “After training, I sometimes walk through the shopping area. There aren’t any specific stores I go to, but I just love to look around and enjoy the atmosphere.” He has a favorite spot though, “It’s the stall with the meat and black pudding, have a look if you really want to try something special’’. Another major advantage of the Poort – or ‘Poortje’ as the locals like to call it – is that it’s not as busy as downtown Amsterdam. ‘’The Bijlmer is more beautiful than ever”, he says. “I’ve lived here for a while, but now there’s more low-rise instead of the big high-rise flats. It really has improved over the years.”

‘The Bijlmer is more beautiful than ever’

Big Dreams If things had gone a little different and Ruben had not been a professional football player, he would have liked to have worked with young people, elaborating “It would be nice to encourage people to make the most of their lives as possible. To keep them off the street by having one-to-one conversations about the future and ensure they finish school. Education is so important. Everyone has dreams. It’s up to you to find out about your own and chase it. Giving up is not an option.” Since we’re on the subject of dreams, Ruben still has dreams of his own. “Playing for FC Barcelona is my biggest desire”, he admits. “But I would miss my family very much. And of course I would struggle to be away from Amsterdam. It is my hometown!”

always something to do

in the Amsterdamse Poort

The Amsterdamse Poort is the Netherland’s most multifaceted and hospitable shopping centre! And that’s not just an empty phrase... The Poort (Dutch for Portal), as it is popularly called, is the great shopping- and working area in Amsterdam Zuidoost, on less than a five minute’s walk from Bijlmer ArenA Station. Amsterdam Zuidoost bubbles with energy; it’s lively and welcoming, and it’s a true melting. That’s why there is a huge diversity of shops in the Amsterdamse Poort; from small entrepreneurs in the Shopperhal to shops belonging to the large fashion and electronics chains.

As for food, there’s plenty of choice: from healthy salads to oriental sandwiches and delicacies. Having lunch in the Poort is therefore a real treat, especially when the weather allows you to eat out. And that’s what inhabitants of Zuidoost, as well as the many commuters working at one of the big office blocks surrounding the Amsterdamse Poort, like to do best. The easy accessibility of the shopping centre is a definite advantage for most. From Bijlmer ArenA Station it’s only a short walk to the Poort, but for those who have a car there‘s also plenty of cheap parking space available in one of the garages. For more information, go to www.amsterdamsepoort.nl

New at the Poort! You can smell the freshly baked Turkish delicacies when you enter the Amsterdamse Poort from Bijlmer ArenA train station. Appropriately translated as ‘Bagel Paradise’, this is the owners third shop to open, the others being on Kinkerstraat and Nieuwendijk. In this modern eatery you can enjoy a delicious breakfast complete with Turkish coffee or tea, or treat yourself to the exotic lunch menu, or simply satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing from the wide selection of cakes. If time’s not on your side, you can also order your meal to go. So, what’s it going to be? A Turkish bagel, a sandwich stuffed with cheese, eggplant or meat? Or a healthy chicken sandwich? Hoekenrode June 19th and 20th marked the grand reopening of Hoekenrode and the spectacular show at the Amsterdamse Poort was a great success! After a year of hard work, Zuidoost has a new beautiful green and sustainable outdoor space. The large square, previously quite vacant and underused, now offers a large terrace for shoppers to rest their feet. It’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries while enjoying a nice cup of coffee or refreshment on the friendly terraces of Brasserie Hoekenrode, Lebkov or Marmaris.

High Speed Shoppen With Mahogny & Jenessa If they could, they would most certainly shop every day. You can find friends Mahogny and Jenessa in the Amsterdamse Poort on a regular basis. “Shopping is our biggest hobby!” says Mahogny. When asked whether they want to spend fifty Euros they didn’t hesitate. Our conditions: spend the money within fifteen minutes in at least three stores. Ready, steady ... go!

14

The first stop is H&M. Still a bit hesitant and shy they’re looking around. A number of items are held in the air, but eventually the girls can’t find anything to their liking. They’re having more luck at Donna di Ricardo Ladies Fashion, where they both buy a white shirt with a print of a perfume bottle. With only € 20 left in their pockets, they run to Etos. At the drugstore the girls rummage through the lip gloss and mascaras. Jenessa looks at the clock and gasps. “Do we only have ten minutes left? Jeez, we have to hurry!” They run to the next stop: JaJo Fashion, where they grab a bargain, buying two pairs of shorts for € 5 each! Mahogny and Jenessa constantly discuss how they will divide the money. “We now only have only a tenner. Where do we run to?” The Shopperhal it is. At Agnes Bijoux Jewelery Shop Mahogny chooses a € 6 piercing ball. Eager to make the most of the last few Euros, Jenessa decides to sacrifice her idea of new nail gel, and the two friends rush to The Budget Store, where they buy a drink and a small eyeliner bottle, with only € 0,60 left. Mission accomplished! As two truly good friends, Jenessa and Mahogny worked as a team and divided their fifty euro with ‘Shopper-tastic’ military precision. “Now we both have the same outfit, which we will certainly wear at the same time!”

Don’t you already have about a thousand lip glosses?
