Understanding, empathizing and collaborating with others.

UALITIES Seniors Alex Cesare, Brianna Vinson and Ben Deskins

he educational model of the 21st century has embraced research showing a link between effective leadership skills and high emotional intelligence, or EQ. Five qualities of someone with high EQ: 1) self-awareness 2) self-regulation 3) internal motivation 4) empathy 5) social skills

Since its founding in 1951, All Saints’ has recognized the intrinsic value of developing these non-cognitive skills in its students starting in the Early Childhood program and continuing through Senior year. Our college-preparatory academic curriculum is packaged in a culture that develops self-confidence, social skills, respect, empathy, humility and global citizenship.

“A

t All Saints’, every Senior designs and completes a Senior Project. For mine, I saw a problem and wanted to be a part of the solution. Statistically, women are underrepresented in the national STEM workforce. In large part, this is due to girls not being encouraged as much as boys to explore and study STEM at a young age. In April, I designed and taught Introduction to Computer Science courses to middle school girls at the Texas Wesleyan “Expanding Your Horizons” conference, whose mission is to inspire girls to pursue opportunities in STEM.”

“M

y Senior Project addresses the growing disparity between science education and the ecological needs of our nation and world in the 21st century. Through discussions with scientists, educators, and curriculum designers, I developed an elementary education model built around benefits of the outdoor classroom. The specific section addressing the population decline of bees and other pollinators is the one about which I am most passionate.”

“F

or my Senior Project, I wanted to create a documentary that helps educate my generation on the long-term effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, particularly the 9th Ward. Since I have family in New Orleans, I have always been invested in the story, but my perspective at six years old is very different than today. In May, I spent a week on location researching, interviewing, filming and editing my documentary. I am so humbled to share what the residents have overcome; it is something I will never forget.”
