ACT Test Prep Nancy Crossley 12:00-3:00 p.m. Grades 11-12 (min. 5/max. 20 students) $465 (price includes Official ACT Prep Guide)
The recent overhaul of the SAT follows closely what the ACT has been doing for years; therefore, preparation for the ACT improves SAT skills as well. The ACT has four sections (Reading, English, Math, Science) and an Essay. The Science section, which is more about reading data than scientific knowledge, has now added “dual scientist” passages, and the Essay has changed completely from persuasive to argumentative. We will spend one day on each section plus one on the Essay. We will work on strategies and pacing throughout.

For further information or questions, please email the Director of Summer Programs at SummerU@aseschool.org.
Biblical Literature will take students through the evolution of the Christian Bible, examining the communities that were integral to its development while simultaneously considering how they themselves are impacted by its stories. Students will study both the content of the Biblical books, and their history and context within a much larger canon, in the hope that they will emerge with a deeper appreciation for the narrative of the Christian faith and its application for contemporary Christian worship, life and a broader understanding of culture. The course is designed to give students an accessible introduction to the overarching narrative of The Bible, and, through art, media and other critical resources, enable students to understand the wider cultural impact of the texts and their interpretation. The course is taken over the summer, with introductory sessions at the start of the break, where most of the course is then studied online with study sessions peppered throughout the summer.

SAINTS LIVE Learning in a Virtual Environment
Jordan Amy In-class Instruction: M-F, July 8-26, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Grades 9-12 $895
The Battle at Thermopylae may sound unfamiliar in name. However, most people know the event from the acclaimed graphic novel (and subsequent movie) 300. Everyone knows the name of the legendary hero, Hercules, but the character has also been turned into a long-standing member of the Avengers. Asterix tells the story of Gauls comically resisting Roman occupation, and Rome West presents a re-imagined history of a Roman fleet blown drastically off course to discover America a millennium before Columbus. In this course, students will learn about important historical events and people from antiquity and examine modern day graphic novels about those same topics in order to compare and contrast the actual history with the fantastical way and the freedom with which things can be portrayed in a different medium. The course will culminate in a project which tasks students to create their own short graphic novel, or chapter of a longer work, centering on the historical event or person of their choice. *This class provides one of three seminar credits required for the Honors Classics Diploma. Students must already be taking Latin throughout high school to be eligible.
World Religion (class for credit and one of the religion class options required for graduation)

Contemporary Religious Issues will trace the historical roots of modern religious issues and encourage students to reflect upon history and formulate thoughtful opinions regarding the ways in which the ethical and theological tenants of religions affect the society and vice versa. Subjects discussed in the course vary and may include religion and science, religious fundamentalism, politics and religion, liberation theology, philosophy of religion, social justice or other topics that arise from current events.

Basic Economics will be delivered for the first time as a 100% online course. With good planning and effective time management, students can complete this course even when they are on vacation, at camp or just taking it easy for the summer.
