Gas-electricity package an appealing energy option ATS members have the opportunity to tap into a new, highly competitive energy deal thanks to their co-operative’s alignment with Genesis Energy. Members will soon be able to sign up for Genesis Energy’s LPG supply and also enjoy an additional prompt payment discount when buying electricity at the same time. ATS Energy Account Manager Tracey Gordon says many of the co-operative’s cropping farmers are familiar with the efficiency and cost effectiveness of gas. “Using gas fired grain driers with gas as a source, the LPG provides a highly efficient and economic means of getting grain moisture levels down quickly, maximizing the value of their hard grown crop.” For dairy farmers in the region electricity costs are a major line in the farm cash budget under scrutiny through the tough payout period. Genesis Energy Business Development Manager Glen Spry says working with ATS Energy for over five years and building a good understanding of member’s needs

has resulted in the opportunity to bring a multiproduct offering with the partnership. “As the energy behind New Zealand, we understand and appreciate the significant role the agricultural sector plays in New Zealand. With effectiveness in farming and power savings in mind, we are now able to offer LPG as part of our electricity offering to ATS members”. Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) surveys indicate hot water heating accounts for almost a third of a dairy shed’s typical energy use, close to pumping, with refrigeration second at 21%. For a typical Canterbury irrigated dairy unit, electricity forms 7% of the farm’s total farm working expenses, and one more reason farmers are interested in reducing these costs by exploring heating options, including gas systems. Genesis Energy’s ability to supply the convenient 45kg bottles is well matched to the expanding gas fired heating technology also now on the market. Glen Spry says that there are some real advantages in using new dairy shed technology with gas. “There are no more cold water clean-ups after winter vet visits through instant hot water supply, independent from cylinder
