ATS Staff Profile Spray hardware team keep work flowing
It may be a small, low profile space on the ATS Ashburton shop floor, but the ATS Spray Hardware team are proud of their growing significance, and the role they play in keeping cardholders’ businesses running smoothly. As farm and contractor businesses have grown in the region, the demand for skilled spray technicians capable of repairing and retailing spray equipment has also grown with it. Roy Collett one of the spray hardware technicians on the team has noticed the increase in demand for the team’s skills, coming from areas as varied as pig farmers needing parts for water blasters, to spray contractors and cropping farmers needing advice on equipment. Roy has been with the team for 18 months, having made the move from sunny Whakatane and brings experience that includes time spent working on crop spraying programmes in the Bay of Islands. He says the spray business has focussed on stocking quality brands with wide application across all industries, and backed by an excellent

level of parts and after market support. “We work closely with Bertolini, but also have Croplands with the AR pumps, and Silvan, which are all well established, respected brands with areas of expertise.” Modern sprayers inevitably include multiple parts, and the ATS team pride themselves on stocking most major parts in demand for these brands. There is also a willingness to stock equipment best suited to specific jobs, rather than aim for a “one size fits all” approach to offering advice. Richie McCrea of McCrea Painters and Decorators bought his Bertolini water blaster off ATS 18 years ago, and the team have serviced it ever since. The integral part of his business needs regular maintenance, and Ritchie says he appreciates the communications from the spray department when equipment is being assessed for repair. “They will ring you up and let you know if there is going to be more to be done than initially thought, that is really appreciated, you don’t end up with any nasty surprises in the bill.” The focus of the business is more service orientated than profit driven, with ATS’s cooperative model helping keep charges down. “We also make a point of only charging in five minute units, rather than one hour units – some jobs may only take a few minutes, others much longer, so the charge more accurately reflects the time spent on that particular job.” The team also keep all repairs in store, rather than travelling out to farms which can add
significant overheads to the service. “Most equipment is small enough it is not too difficult to bring in here to Ashburton for repair if it needs it.” The team is commonly repairing shearing hand pieces, electric hand pieces, spreaders, drench guns, 12 volt pumps and back pack sprayers but there is also a range of other farm hardware they help repair and maintain. Canterbury pig farmer Rob Turney says he appreciates the high level of product knowledge and good stock levels that back up the ATS service. “You know when you go in they will have it, it won’t need to be ordered, and you can tell there and then if it is exactly the right part you are looking for.” The nuts and bolts of machine repair are largely undertaken by in house technician John Robinson. John is well known in Ashburton. He is also on the board of Gluyas Motor Group in town, and he brings a wealth of equipment and repair knowledge across the range of sometimes complex spray equipment. Working alongside Richard Beckley and Roy, the spray team represent a small but valuable network of knowledge, knowledge Roy says is easily shared within ATS’s easy going work environment. “Usually if one of us does not know something about a piece of equipment or repair, there will always be someone who does.”

Nutritional concepts around calf rearing The primary objective in calf rearing is to wean the calf from liquid onto solid feed with the aim of producing a well-developed ruminant animal that meets the needs of a dairy replacement or beef rearing system. There are five factors required for proper rumen development. These are: Establishment of bacteria in the rumen - When the calf is born there are no bacteria in the rumen. As dry feed intake increases, the fermentation in the rumen increases, which results in anaerobic bacteria increases. These bacteria cause the rumen papillae to grow. Liquid in the rumen - Bacteria cannot grow without sufficient water. Feeding milk or calf milk replacer (CMR) does not contribute to water intake as these fluids by-pass the rumen until 12 weeks of age. Movement of material out of the rumen by muscular action - Initially
the rumen has little muscular activity but this increases rapidly with increasing dry feed intake. When fed solid feed, ruminal contractions can be felt as young as three weeks old. However, if they are fed milk only, ruminal contractions may not be felt for long periods. Absorptive ability of the rumen - The ability of the rumen to absorb the endproducts of fermentation is an important part of ruminal development. Initially the rumen has very little absorptive ability; this function must be developed. The epithelial layer consists of finger like projections (papillae) that increase the surface area for absorption. Researchers have indicated that the primary stimulus for their development is volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Available substrate in the rumen - The substrate has to be provided to the calf in the form of dry feed. In addition, this feed needs to be a form that promotes the fermentation of VFAs. To meet these requirements a specifically designed calf feed containing a high

proportion of grains (Âą40 per cent) will provide a substrate for fermentation and the production of VFAs. Grains that have been steam-flaked will promote rumen epithelial development better than standard maize processing techniques. Encouraging high dry matter intake will promote rumen development and palatability and digestibility is vital. Ingredients like molasses, copra meal and steam-flaked grains will encourages high feed intake in calves. It is important to maintain a balance between fibre and grain. Grain has a far more significant effect on rumen epithelial development than forage. However fibre is necessary to promote the muscular development of the rumen wall. In addition, fibre helps prevent “clumpingâ€? together of the papillae which may inhibit VFA production. The inclusion of vitamins and minerals in calf feed is critical for bone development and overall health of calves. A coccidiostat is also important to combat coccidiosis, as is a rumen buffering agent to prevent rumen acidosis. NRM Calf Feed Range NRM calf feeds contain ingredients selected for optimum digestibility and blended for palatability to stimulate feed intake for faster growth. NRM calf feeds contain the unique NRM Moozlee flavouring to ensure easy transition between products as the calves grow. NRM calf feeds are fortified with vitamins and minerals and provide a balanced diet to promote health and growth at each stage of calf development.

New innovation for dairy farmers ATS have much pleasure in introducing our dairy farming members to FarmGuard for the coming dairy season. Dairy farmers will be able to access the FarmGuard range of products, including the bulk tank system, through ATS.
response from farmers. “This system, coupled with premium product quality, is a fantastic offering which has been taken up by many farmers already. This is a real shift away from how business was done previously and I am delighted by the responses from farmers once they have the system in place. We are making a really positive difference to the way things are done on NZ dairy farms”.
Orica have successfully introduced into the South Island our unique delivery mechanism for the bulk delivery of dairy hygiene chemicals. South Island dairy farmers have realised the revolution of moving to bulk supply of dairy sanitisers and teat spray products. The system has proved itself to be seamless, cost-effective, convenient and most importantly, safe.
Product innovation
Never before have dairy farmers had the convenience of bulk acid and bulk teat spray delivered to the farm gate via the Orica BLT Fleet of specialised units based in Timaru. Product is delivered into custom built, high specification double bunded tanks. The tanks are fully plumbed into the dairy shed and can operate in conjunction with any existing equipment. It is important to note that there are no upfront costs associated with implementing this system. Deferred payment terms are in place with ATS on all bulk FarmGuard products. This gives farmers the option to pay products off over time without incurring interest charges. Mark Maitland, Technical Sales Specialist for the Canterbury region, is thrilled with the
“The DTP Ultimate (chlorhexidine teat spray) has probably been shown the greatest interest to date. It has the highest active and highest emollient loading of all leading products, yet is one of the cheapest on the market. The most satisfying thing is that pretty much all of the users have reported better teat condition and improved somatic cell counts regardless of what leading brand they used previously”. Orica’s new high performance dairy acid sanitiser “Supreme Clean” is a market leading acid which is both functional and cost effective. This product’s development was in conjunction to new low residual regulations set by all milk processors as they expressed a desire to reduce the level of residues in milk from on-farm sources. Orica took this opportunity to work closely with the Orica laboratory team, multiple independent partners and involvement from current farmers using FarmGuard products to produce a market leading acid formulation. Removal of QAC type sanitisers was a large part of our reformulation also.
and it didn’t cost us anything to change to the new system; the storage tanks and the electrical chemical dispensers are part of the service and Mark Maitland, from Orica Chemicals, installed them in no time. We now only press a button and the chemical is delivered into the wash tub. Orica chemical prices are very competitive and will help us drive our cost down. Before we changed chemical companies we asked people who were already using the Orica concept if they have had any issues with milk quality. They were all happy, as we are now with this novel system. I would recommend giving your ATS rep or store a call to enquiry about the Orica Concept” - Carlos Cuadrado, Ashburton Advantages of bulk chemical supply; • No more 200L drums. • Reduced product usage (dosing systems). • Reduced chemical wastage. • Safe handling of toxic/corrosive products. • Reduced legal liability concerns. • Security of supply. • Zero setup cost. • Premium products. • Pricing is the same regardless of geographical location. Orica offers a 24/7 shed service. Our fully trained Dairy Specialists resolve issues regarding grades, training farm staff and equipment maintenance and re-calibration of dosing units. We are thrilled to be now working closely with ATS and farmers to provide on-farm solutions. We are passionate about on-farm safety, reducing drum waste, ease of management and delivering all of this at competitive prices. Please don’t hesitate to visit your local ATS store to enquire about tank installations and pricing for this coming season or call 0800 BUY ATS (289 287).

“We were looking for better ways to use chemicals in our dairy shed. Something that was safe, practical to use, efficient, affordable and with a good service while delivering high quality products. While different companies can provide chemicals with some of these characteristics, we found that Orica chemicals covered all of them. With the Orica concept we don’t manually handle the chemical anymore

Sometimes the photo looks better than the product… not so with the MTF60. Back in 2011 Stallion Plastics CEO and Manawatu dairy farm owner Grant Allen was watching his farm staff carry milk to the calf sheds. It was a basic system utilizing buckets and transporting colostrum in a small tank on a calf trailer to calf sheds located a kilometre away from the cowshed. After arriving at the calf shed, milk was emptied into 20-litre buckets and laboriously tipped into pen feeders sometimes with milk spilling everywhere. At best it was slow and messy. Once all the calves were fed, there was the journey back to the cowshed and the cleaning of the gear. Back at Stallion Plastics, Allen asked his R&D Manager to come up with a solution that allowed for easy transfer, mixing and pumping of milk or milk powder. There
was considerable staff input and after seven different versions and on farm trials, the MTF was born. “Everything we manufacture is tested on farm for ease of use and durability. The best ideas are born from need.” The photo doesn’t show you the simple 4-stroke Honda motor capable of pumping 600 litres per minute. Nor the stainless steel mixing system inside the tank. It can mix up 800 litres of milk powder in just 3 minutes Allen says. “When it’s 3 degrees in the morning, milk powder floats on top of cold water. We designed the MTF to force milk powder under the water and into the pump, similar to a giant milkshake mixer. You can mix anything you need to in 3 minutes – calf milk powder (CMR), Queen of Calves, you name it. If you’re using whole milk, this can be easily pumped into the feeder directly from the silo. It takes 2 minutes to fill the

tanker ready for transport. Set it up and let it fill while you do something else – brilliant. Once at the calf sheds all you need to do is start the motor and run it on low revs. The 5-metre hose with dispensing gun is long enough to reach to the back pens so does away with 20-litre buckets and back breaking work. We can feed the calves in half the time it was taking us before and no wastage.” After feeding, park your feeder in the shade to give the milk the best chance of not spoiling. The tank is made of food-grade white plastic to reflect the sun. A big plus is as the season progresses the MTF60 system will enable you to feed in the paddock or a mixture of both – at the shed and in the paddock without duplicating effort and gear. Cleaning is simple and not always high on the priority list for farm workers in the peak of the season. Half fill the MTF with clean water and turn on the pump. It self-cleans the tank first and then the mixing system. Switch the small ball valve on the manifold and it will clean the manifold and teats in less than three minutes. While the MTF is around twice the price of a simple mobile feeder, it does twice the work in half the time so it’s worth every penny. Not only can you feed calves quicker, it also saves on labour costs and reduces health and safety issues for staff. If you want to see one of these new Stallion MTF mobiles for yourself pop into any ATS store or go to the Stallion website www.stallion.co.nz to see the video. If it’s not a Stallion, it’s not the best feeder!
