ATS Rakaia’s commitment to customer service
ATS Rakaia’s commitment to customer service to Branch Manager, a position she has held for the past 11 years. Maree loves the outdoors, and is wellknown in the Rakaia community through her volunteer work with the Rakaia Walking Track, Rakaia Community Association and the Rakaia Fishing Competition. Since 2001 ATS’s Rakaia branch has been servicing the local farming community on both sides of the Rakaia River. As farming practices have changed, so too has the store, keeping pace with the everchanging needs of its rural customers. But throughout, it’s ATS Rakaia’s commitment to customer service and its ability to add that personal touch through a devoted team of knowledgeable staff, headed by ATS Rakaia Branch Manager Maree Smith, which sets it apart. Originally from Southland, Maree moved to Te Pirita with her family in the early 1980s. Together with husband Warren, the pair operates a successful shearing contracting business. Before joining ATS, Maree was Bar Manager at the South Rakaia Hotel. Initially she started in a sales role, before stepping up
Above all though, she is passionate about her role for ATS. “I love that we can add the personal touch in a smaller community. Our members enjoy coming in for a chat and when time allows them, they know they are welcome to make a hot drink and take a seat in the customer lounge” she said.
The animal food, health and equipment, dairy, ear-tags, and groceries departments are managed by Deb Robinson, who originally hails from Kurow. She has previously worked in banking, as well as doing accounts and pricing jobs for a freight company, and also spent time overseas shepherding and on a large beef and grain farm in Canada.
ATS Rakaia offers the same broad selection of products that cater to the wide variety of farming types in the area as the main ATS Ashburton Branch, albeit on a much smaller scale, carrying everything from dairy shed supplies to agri-chemicals and animal food, as well as arguably the largest ear-tag wall anywhere in the country with numbers up to 1,500. “If we don’t have the product in store, we get it here as soon as possible,” said Maree.
Michele Buckner, who takes care of the clothing, boots, gumboots, safety equipment, and garden equipment, as well as the Gift and Homeware, completes the four-strong ATS Rakaia team. Born in Ireland, Michele came to Rakaia as a child. Prior to coming to ATS, she worked in the area of logistics and purchasing, but also has past experience working as a chef, managing motels, and in customer services.
Maree is ably-supported by a wonderful team, all of whom live locally, which undoubtedly helps them to understand what farmer’s needs are, when they need them.
In all, ATS Rakaia’s friendly team are there to help your farming business run more smoothly. Between them, Maree, John, Deb and Michele offer varied experience across a wide range of fields and look forward to working with you in the future.

News from ATS See you at the South Island Agricultural Field Days ATS will be one of more than 450 exhibitors at this year’s South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) being held at the organisation’s new Kirwee location. The 40 hectare site allows for a greater number of both exhibitors and visitors and replaces the previously leased site at Lincoln, where it has been based for the past 32 years. This year’s Field Days will run from March 25 to March 27 at the new Courtney Road site and organisers are expecting the usual crowd of 25,000 over the three day event to be even bigger this year. The Field Days is one of the South Islands oldest and largest agricultural events with a history spanning 64 years, and is a great opportunity to see the best of agricultural equipment, technology and expertise all in one place. ATS together with key suppliers will be at sites 429 and 430, so make a point of dropping in to see us. We look forward to seeing you there.
Keep stones out of grain storage ATS Seed has reported a growing occurrence of stones in grain, which is becoming a problem for end users, and especially those processing grain in small crushers on dairy farms. Please take care when filling silos and when sweeping or scooping up grain to make sure stones are not present and inadvertently added to your stored grain. It is also timely to remember to take accurate running samples for each stored line of grain, taking into consideration quality parameters like moisture, test weight, screenings and protein. This year we are continuing our Farm Safety Training Courses, in conjunction with Unique Solutions, to ensure you have access to up-to-date health and safety requirements (especially as legislation changes are expected to come into effect later this year) and to ensure you and your staff keep safe in your workplace. Courses cost $550 (GST and member discount inclusive) and seating is strictly limited, with training expected to take place every month throughout the year. Staying safe around chemicals is another way we can help. Approved Handler Certificates are necessary to purchase and apply many chemicals, and we can assist with this process – especially with the renewing of certificates. It’s not too late to start building bulk winter feed If bulk winter feed is needed, it’s not too late to sow. There are some very good autumn sown winter feed options including annual or Italian ryegrasses and forage cereals. These autumn forage cereals germinate and produce feed in colder temperatures better than ryegrass, resulting in outstanding levels of winter feed in a short period of time. Coronet or Milton forage oats and/or Prophet or DoubleTake triticale forage cereals are all good options. If a single winter grazing option is required then consider Milton or Coronet oats. Milton is faster to maturity, providing higher levels of feed during early/midwinter, whereas Coronet oats deliver high quality feed later in the season (mid/ late-winter). The use of DoubleTake or Prophet forage triticale’s are great options, as they
produce similar amounts of feed as oats but also offer grazing plus regrowth if sown early to mid-autumn. Prophet is best suited when late-winter feed and late-spring silage is required. DoubleTake will be slightly quicker to establish and has a shorter time period to first grazing, but will produce less silage in the spring. Milton, Coronet, DoubleTake and Prophet all have different maturity dates, allowing them to be used as a feed management tool to ensure there is high quality forage cereal feed available throughout the winter period. With the exception of sowing depth (forage cereal at 2-3 cm versus ryegrass at 1-2 cm), the management of forage cereals is very similar to that of annual ryegrass. After sowing, apply a DAP type fertiliser with an application of 35 units of nitrogen per hectare. If sowing later, all nitrogen should be applied at sowing. Both Prophet and DoubleTake have been bred for increased disease tolerance, but in high disease environments, fungicide

applications may be required in latewinter for increased whole-crop cereal silage yields. To maximise spring silage, graze triticale carefully so that the tillers are not damaged. When grazing over winter, graze forage cereal as you would an annual ryegrass. Like other forage options, nitrate toxicity can occur on most grasses and crops that have high growth rates in autumn and winter. It is good practice to introduce animals gradually to crops, provide a low N supplementary feed (e.g. hay), inspect animals daily, and consult your vet if you suspect nitrates are high. Autumn sown forage cereals for winter feed can provide a large volume of high quality winter feed. Compared to annual or Italian ryegrasses, autumn forage cereals will increase your winter and spring yields.
