Animal health experience and knowledge; key to achieving the best outcome November is an important time of year for animal health, whether you are treating lambs, ewe drenching, fly control or administering oral or pouron drenches for cattle. It’s important you make the right choices at the right time to ensure your stock perform for your farming needs. To maximise these opportunities, you need to get the best advice and that’s how the rural supplies team at ATS can help. Many of the staff have a wealth of animal health knowledge gained through their own personal and previous occupational experiences, and through ongoing training. One such staff member is Sally Childs who is a familiar face in the Ashburton store, having spent nine years with ATS. Sally grew up on a sheep and beef farm and spent 13 years with vet clinics and currently runs a deer farm with her partner. She says her own experiences help her identify with farmers and to understand their on-farm needs. Jane Evans, who has recently moved to the Rakaia store from Ashburton, has dairy experience, having spent 10 years in the industry moving from calf rearing and relief milking, to contract milking. “It helps because I have a good knowledge of what’s happening and what’s needed throughout the year.” Another staff member with vet clinic experience

is Abi Rackham, who is based at the Methven store. Over recent years she has worked at local vet clinics and dairy farms before joining the ATS team. She still does relief milking and rears beef calves on her lifestyle block. “Even though I know what I do is small scale compared to our members, I do understand their needs and have the product knowledge to help them. ” This will help ensure that member’s stock productivity and performances are catered for. Sam Boal recently joined the ATS Methven team and brings with him five years’ experience from working on sheep, deer and cropping farms. Sam knows the specific needs and requirements of sheep farmers, ensuring members get their animal needs right the first time. Mel Sowden also brings hands-on sheep and beef experience from her previous lines of work which saw her rear beef calves, help with lambing and scanning ewes. She is a great believer of “not cutting corners on animal health” and tries to ensure members follow this important rule. ATS General Manager, Robert Sharkie says in addition to the personal experiences each staff member brings, the team can also draw on a myriad of independent information and expertise through its supportive supplier companies. With no product or supplier bias, staff can help find the best product for a farmer’s individual situation at the best price.
Communication is key to providing the best solution, says Robert. “It’s all about outcomes. What is the end result? Are you looking at killable stock or replacements? These are two very different outcomes and need to be approached as such.” Having open conversations about your farming operation, plans and stock aspirations will help the ATS team provide you with the most cost effective options to maximise your stock performance and productivity. This team approach, drawing on the farmer’s knowledge, along with input from ATS staff and suppliers, based on actual results in the real world is a winning formula. “We have the ability to replicate successes from our first hand, out-in-the-field knowledge,” says Robert. The sharing of knowledge from all parties means the wider ATS membership will all benefit.
