ATS Energy empowering shareholders It has been four years since ATS established its independent division ATS Energy with a single aim – to ensure members receive the most up to date, unbiased cost effective advice possible around the complex business of electricity contracts, suppliers and prices. Under the founding skills of ATS Energy Account Manager Tracey Gordon, members have been able to pick a path through one of the most complex and expensive items within their farm operations and budget. That knowledge has become even more invaluable as the choices available for electricity supply and contract types have also grown in the past few years. Farmers now have a choice of half a dozen electricity suppliers, all with their own terms, definitions and contracts that often require interpretation. ATS Energy’s independent status means the co-operative is well placed to negotiate with all companies. ATS has also developed a system to make comparative energy cost analysis possible for members.

For irrigation users, who are such a large part of ATS membership, the electricity equation has an added layer of complexity around it when it comes to determining the type of contract that should be signed up, to optimise water use in the lowest sustainable cost possible. ATS staff have worked closely with electricity companies over the past four years to get accounts simplified and explained in a way that makes sense to our clients. And when relationships breakdown, which can happen, ATS members have a strong advocate in their corner to help with negotiation and a resolution that does not leave them out of pocket. Because “knowledge is power” ATS Energy has also invested strongly in publications and newsletters that try to “de-myth” the electricity sector, with easily understood, practical explanations on some of the intricacies of the market. As alternative energy sources become more prevalent, from conventional options like gas supply to less conventional like solar or wind, ATS Energy has managed to build a deeper understanding of the economics and
systems that will deliver the best options to members. Understanding the intense seasonal nature of electricity use over the irrigation season means it soon becomes possible to eliminate apparent options that can match those patterns, before the considerable investment is made. ATS’s co-operative structure based around a relatively tight geographic region brings some advantages over larger “national” farm service co-operatives. That is most of our staff have close links to our farming shareholders, living in the same region and often are involved in farming themselves – they appreciate the seasonal subtleties that go with farming in Canterbury, and the peculiar demands seasonal Canterbury farming brings. This extends to ATS Energy, and the co-operative has worked hard to build a deep knowledge of a complex item to make life, and farming, easier for our shareholders. For more information on ATS Energy or any other energy issues please contact Tracey Gordon on 0800 BUY ATS (289 287).

Bulk fuel deliveries
Excise tax refund If you’re a business owner who uses petrol-powered equipment in your operations, you may be entitled to an excise tax refund of up to 69¢ per litre. This includes using petrol powered equipment to: • Move about the land you and your staff work on (i.e. ATV’s used by farmers); • Work the land the equipment operates on (i.e. lawnmowers used by green keepers, hydraladas used by orchardists); • Keep your businesses operating (i.e. builders using generators, chainsaws used in forestry). Excise duty ($0.69/L as at 1/7/2015) is unique to petrol and is New Zealand Transport Authority’s (NZTA) way of getting the public to fund its roading projects. If you are in business and some of the petrol you use isn’t used on the road, then you will likely be eligible to lodge a claim and have the excise amount refunded. This way NZ’s backbone businesses aren’t unfairly subsidising other road users. To get your refund of fuel excise duty, contact Kerry Aldrich from the NZTA on 06 953 7021 or 0800 108 809 (Ext 7021), she will advise you on your claim, register your request and ensure you have the correct forms to fill out.
