Since 1996, the Randolph-Asheboro YMCA has offered a unique basketball program aimed at providing physical activity, developmental support and role models for kids who are sometimes left on the sidelines. This year, in partnership with the City of Asheboro Recreation Department, the Asheboro Police Department and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, the Y’s Midnight Basketball program will also strengthen community by building bonds between youth participants and law enforcement.

“The Y’s goal is to give our young people positive outlets for their time and energy,” said Joe Taureck, Youth Sports Director. “For years we have leaned on community volunteers to serve as scorekeepers and coaches. This year, with the support of the Asheboro Police Department and Randolph County Sherriff’s Office, local officers will serve in these roles, building connections and encouraging teamwork, healthy activity and fun.”

“The midnight basketball league is great and gives Law enforcement in this county an opportunity to instill trust in those that participate,” said Randolph County Sheriff Gregory Seabolt. “With law-enforcement in general across America being looked down upon in a negative light, we must make every opportunity to be a part of the community. I feel certain that friendships will develop which will build a stronger bond between citizens and law-enforcement. I commend YMCA Director Patrick O’Hara and Program Coordinator Joe Taureck for their time in organizing this league.”

“It is important that kids see first-hand that our officers are people, too,” said Asheboro Police Chief Mark Lineberry. “We are moms and dads, neighbors and people they can count on when they needs us. Basketball gives us a great way to build those connections with kids and their families.”

The Midnight Basketball program engages more than 200 participants ages 8 to 18 from Randolph County Schools, Asheboro City Schools and other surrounding school systems. Games take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6, 7, and 8 PM during the month of July. With the help of the Randolph County United Way and community donors and sponsors, no child is turned away due to an inability to pay.
