Dear Readers,

B

eer Snob Magazine is a project that we are working on here at Crown Harbor Markeing, Inc. Currently we publish Asheboro Magazine, a publication for the residents of the City of Asheboro. We have been in the magazine business for a long time (a little over 22 years) and we recently sold seven magazines we were publishing in the Southwest Charlotte and Raleigh areas. The sale of these publications has given us the opportunity to pursue other projects. In researching opportunities, we decided that there was a real need for a magazine that celebrates the local beer brewing industry. The idea of publishing a local magazine for craft beer lovers is an exciting prospect. As part of our research, we attended the 2010 High Country Beer Fest, in Boone, North Carolina on September 4, 2010. Being beer lovers ourselves, we’ve been to other Beer Fests, but we found this one to be especially fun. Not only did we taste some of the best local beers available, we aslo sampled some sensational regional beers, too. On top of the beer tastings, we attended a seminar given by Erick’s Cheese & Wine where they paired some extraordinary cheeses with 4  Beer Snob Magazine  August 2010

equally fantastic beers. We had paired cheese with wine before but had never thought about pairing it with beer. It was such a fantastic experience, we drove the seventeen miles from the Beer Fest to Banner Elk, NC to visit Erick’s Cheese and Wine to buy some of the cheese we had just sampled to enjoy back at home in Asheboro. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Erick’s in Banner Elk, it is an awsome little shop and we would strongly encourage you to pay them a visit. They have over 100 gourmet cheeses, 68 different beers and over 110 different wines in stock. They also have a variety of gourmet snacks you can buy to go with the beer, wine and cheese. Best of all, they are very knowledgable and super nice. It’s not like some of those hoity-toity places you’ve probably stopped into where the owner made you feel stupid for not knowing what wine goes with what cheese. In fact, Erick’s is just the opposite. But the best part of the day was meeting all the wonderful people that were at the Beer Fest for the same reason we were. This special edition of Beer Snob is a pictorial of the day’s fun and festivities. It is hard to single out one beer that tasted better than another, or which band was the best, but my favorite “character” was the guy wearing a hat decorated with hops. That being said, there were so many fantastic people there you’d have to try real hard not to have a great time. And even then, I am confident even the crankiest person on the planet would have managed a smile or two. Finally, we want to extend a very special and heartfelt thanks to Brett Taubman and Jon Saken for the tickets and hosting one of the best events we’ve ever attended. If you’ve never been to the High Country Beer Fest, make sure it is on your calendar for next year. This is an event not to be missed.
