Dear Readers,

A s h e b o r o C a l e n d a r. com is a website where local events and their details will be posted. AsheboroEvents.com, it’s sister site, is a website where local events will be featured after the event. Both were designed to promote and then highlight the wonderful events that take place here in Asheboro and Randolph County. This is a Special Event Magazine that we will publish after each event we attend. Our goal is to first raise awareness of each event with AsheboroCalendar.com so others will attend and, afterward, commemorate each in pictures with a Special Event Magazine similar to this one. Both websites are part of Asheboro Magazine’s, Asheboro Proud initiative which is designed to fuel the local economy by emphasizing the unique character of Asheboro. The Wente Vineyard Wine Tasting took place at Lumina Wine and Beer on September 1, 2010. The guest of honor was Phillip Wente, Vice Chairman of Wente Family Estates in Livermore, California. Founded 128 years ago, Wente Vineyards is the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery. It isn’t often you get a guest of Phillip Wente’s
prestige at a small local wine tasting which speaks volumes about the Wente family’s commitment to helping it’s customer grow. The attendance of this event was spectacular and the wines did not disappoint. We started with a Pinot Grigio. I am not a white wine fan, but this particular wine was very pleasing to the palate. We then tasted a Chardonnay which, in my humble opinion, was on par with some the best wines in its price point. From there we moved to the reds. The first red we tasted was my favorite. It was from the Wente family’s Tamás Estates which is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Barbera blend. At around $10 a bottle, this is one of the best reds I have had the pleasure of drinking. It drinks like a Merlot but has the maturity and flavor depth of a Cab. This blend of grapes creates an adventurously robust yet smooth red wine with mouth-filling flavors of blackberry, black cherry and plum, and a smooth, spicy finish. It definitely meets Lumina’s criteria of a $10 bottle that drinks like a $25 or $30 bottle. We then tasted the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon which were also quite good. If it were me, I would have saved the Double Decker Red for last though because after tasting it first, the other two did not get the attention they deserved. The best part of the event was meeting all the great folks in attendance, seeing some of our new friends and talking with a world-class wine maker. It didn’t hurt that we heard many great comments about the first issue of Asheboro Magazine. Keep an eye on AsheboroCalendar .com for the next wine tasting at Lumina Beer and Wine. You won’t want to miss it.
