A
rtworks Gallery presents a twoperson exhibit entitled, "Angels and Earthly Creations" by Nancy Hayes and Kim Varnadoe. NANCY HAYES returns to a lifelong love affair with the animal kingdom in the current work exploring a personal relationship with both domesticated and wild species through acrylic and paper machĂŠ. Connecting the savage to the domestic each piece is paired with a woven wall hanging of yarn, string, and sticks. Originally from Atlanta Georgia, transplanted to Winston-Salem nearly 40 years ago, Nancy has a BA in English from the University of Georgia and a BFA from UNC Greensboro. Kim Varnadoe, "The Damsel", polaroid emulsion lift, argyotype, found photo, dragonfly wing, etc KIMBERLY VARNADOE has been photographing angel statues for over 15 years.

The angels in this exhibition represent statues photographed in Lviv, Ukraine, Savannah, Georgia, Biloxi, Mississippi and WinstonSalem, North Carolina. Varnadoe received her BFA in Painting from the University of South Alabama and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Memphis. She has worked with experimental photography techniques for more than 30 years, often combining the various mediums. This exhibit has samples of several experimental techniques including CitraSolv transfers, acrylic gel medium transfers and polaroid emulsion lifts. Some pieces combine these techniques. Varnadoe has been teaching in the college system since 1986 and is currently Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Salem College in Winston-Salem North Carolina. MUSIC LINEUP Triad Scottish Fiddlers Story and Photo Courtesy Triad Fiddlers Website Triad Scottish Fiddlers and Friends is a Music Club, comprised of both amateur and professional musicians, that meets regularly in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, encompassing the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. The club is co-led by fiddlers Debbie Morris and Nora Garver. If you are a musician - of any skill level - and you'd like to play Scottish traditional music, contact Debbie or Nora. Their contact info is listed below. The group focuses on the interpretation and performance of traditional Scottish music, much of it from the Golden Age of Scottish music in the mid 18th to early 19th centuries. This period in Scottish history saw a great flowering of intellectual thought, literature and the arts, including popular demand for compositions of tunes to accompany Scottish Country dancers. These tunes took standard forms such as the jig, the reel, and the strathspey, and emphasized tempo and rhythm as well as melody. The tunes, often named for the person who commissioned them, were usually performed by a lone fiddler accompanied by a bass-player, today's cello. TSFF has a core of about six fiddlers, a cello, Celtic drum, harp, low and high whistles, recorder, guitar, and even a hammered dulcimer on occasion! Traditional Scottish dance music made its way to America with merchant ships and Scottish and Irish immigrants, and its echoes can be heard in the traditional folk music of the Appalachian Mountains today. He released his solo record debut, When All Else Fails… through Nascent Republic Records on March 17, 2009. This is an album two years in the making, and boasts tracks such as “Save Me” and “California” that are both musically engaging and lyrically solid. The album is available in digital and CD format. Patrick is continuing to gain recognition in his area, and was selected for the fourth time to open up for the band Sister Hazel at their Greensboro show. He was also chosen as Omega Sports Store’s Artist of the Month for August 2009. Patrick most recently won a contest by Sonicbids and had an in-store performance at the Greensboro GAP, where his music will now be entered in a national contest with consideration for store and advertisement placement. “The past is all behind me, I need the future now…” sings Patrick in his song, “Muse.” Nothing could be closer to the truth at the moment. Already having a reputation as a great live performer, he is planning on sticking to his formula of high energy live shows and plans to introduce an intimate acoustic portion as well. It quickly becomes apparent to members of any audience how well-suited and relaxed Patrick is onstage. “The last couple of albums I put out really struck home with my audience and I’m hoping this one will be just as relatable.” During performances, each lyric is delivered with the same intensity as the moment it was written, and it’s easy to get lost in the expressiveness of the songs. Winston - Salem Theatre Alliance Story and Photo Courtesy Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance webpage www.wstheatrealliance.org The Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance was founded by director Fred Gorelick in 1983. Gorelick, who taught advanced acting classes at the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem at the time, began producing “showcase” productions to show his students’ work to the public. His tireless energy and tenacity resulted in a permanent functioning theatre, the Winston Salem Theatre Alliance. He would later recall that starting a community theatre company “is one of those things that you only do when you are young and stupid”. Youth and stupidity notwithstanding, Gorelick and his feisty band of thespian “pioneers” built the foundations for one of WinstonSalem’s most respected theatre arts organizations. During Gorelick’s tenure, WSTA was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, and still operates under that charter. The first production was “The Royal Family”, performed at the Reynolda House, followed by “Crimes of The Heart” at Wake Forest University. Other shows in the 1980′s included “The Real Thing”, “House of Blue Leaves”, “The Crucible”, and “True West”. In the 1990s, Michael Huie was appointed Artistic Director of the Theatre Alliance, and held that title for several years. During this time, a more formally structured Board of Directors began to form, with Harold Tedford serving as President. Administrative responsibilities took on greater importance. The first decade of the new century saw a departure of Michael Huie as Artistic Director. Again, guest directors were hired to direct shows, with board members taking a greater role in production responsibilities. Eventually, one of the guest directors, Jamie Lawson, was asked to assume the responsibility of Artistic Director. For the first few years, Lawson relied on himself and guest directors to mount complete seasons of Theatre Alliance productions. Thereafter, Lawson assumed the responsibility of producing and directing all of Theatre Alliance’s shows. Over the years, the Theatre Alliance has produced shows in various venues, including the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the Augsburg Community Center, Wake Forest University, and several years at SECCA. This year, on the occasion of its 25th birthday, the Theatre Alliance has moved out of other peoples’ basements and into a “home” of its own in the West End of Winston-Salem, at the corner of Reynolda and Northwest Blvd. There, it hopes to continue entertaining its loyal fans, and winning over new ones, with some of the most interesting and entertaining theatre in the Triad. Was tagged "The Gypsy Troubadour" by an East Coast DJ for his intense cross-country Tour schedule. Performing 200 shows a year driving all the miles himself. Society, The Heartland Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center, The Ramona Cancer Resource Center. The Fernando Leon Family Reserve: The Return of the Simple Life

rom the simple and classy band to the only moderately veiny body, the Fernando Leon is a ready companion for those who enjoy a medium bodied smoke. After a clean punch from my round cutter, I pulled a cold draw to see what I was in for. Sweet tobacco‌.slight pepper on the draw‌.memories of fall afternoons in Monticello Park. The draw seems free, promising clear pulls and rich smoke with every puff. PAGE 20

The Fernando Leon Family Reserve lights easily when exposed to the cedar scrap flame (I only use the cedar scrap when I’m feeling fancy and a little nostalgic). The cigar produces an excellent amount of smoke as expected. What is surprising is the disappearance of the loose draw experienced at lighting. The Fernando produces just the right amount of resistance. The flavor in the first 1/3 of the cigar is a sweet tobacco and a nice black pepper. The pepper is deeper and not quite as in your face as, say, a classic Pepin stick. The burn is even and measured, complemented by an overall construction that seems top shelf. Into the second third the pepper becomes more pronounced and is the dominant flavor. Another surprise awaits the patient aficionado: a citrus element enters the profile and lingers on the finish. Moving into the second third the citrus element becomes much more pronounced emitting a fully mature grapefruit like sweetness. Have I mentioned that the ash still holds on like a sentinel on post? This point can’t be overstated: ash is cool because it….cools! Ash quells the inferno erupting within the stick and allows for a slower more eventful burn. Too hot and your mouth will pay with stinging bitterness of scorched tobacco. Too cool and that same tobacco turns to mush, making what should be a relaxing moment an Olympic prize fight: your torch against the under heated stick. Coming down the home stretch the pepper asserts its
dominance in the flavor profile, vanquishing the citrus to a subtle but lingering reminder. As this cigar maintains excellent construction and refuses to burn hot, it can be smoked down to the tips of your fingers. Not finger licking but good nonetheless. The Fernando Leon Family Reserve is a simple cigar anyone should enjoy. The flavor profile is fairly straight forward even with the interesting weaving of the citrus. The choice of citrus flavor…grapefruit…was the one element that raised an eyebrow for me. Interesting is good….unexpected can be exciting…but grapefruit? I say to each his own and creativity should be rewarded (even by the “bah humbug” crowd among us). Strength wise I would put this stick solidly in the medium category. I would recommend it to someone graduating from mild cigars and wanting to take the next step or even to a seasoned connoisseur who enjoys a medium smoke with good flavors. For its nice gray and white ash that held far into the experience, for its abundance of smoke produced, and for its daring (and controversial) use of a grapefruit citrus profile, we award the Fernando Leon the more than respectable 4 E.D.S ranking. WS Arts Magazine has designed and implemented a ratings system where cigars receive an E.D.S (really...I didn't name the rating system after myself) of 1-5. Each review explains, in easy to understand terms, why we chose that particular rating for a given cigar. Our ratings system is described as follows: 1 E.D.S - These are cigars of last resort. They are questionable even if only mowing the yard or planting a garden. 2 E.D.S - These cigars make tolerable companions while you wash your car. They aren't looking for attention, nor should they! 3 E.D.S - These are pretty respectable cigars but may still fall short. We recommend them for the golf course, the back porch with one of your uninitiated friends, or for the after wedding party (for the husband of your best girlfriend who thinks he knows everything about cigars). 4 E.D.S - Now we’re talking. Enjoy these fine cigars after a delicious meal or with your favorite cocktail. Again, I prefer Fridays at Single Brothers (or my Cigar Room). Join me! 5 E.D.S - Respect your elders! These complex treats are true works of art. They deserve Coltrane, good friends, and your favorite adult tasty treat. Only the best!
