ndrew Rogers has a vision. Every year he gets closer to bringing that vision to reality. Since he arrived in 2005, the RiverRun International Film Festival has blossomed ever closer to being the premiere film festival on the east coast. What was a four day festival now spans nine days and covers parts of two weekends. Andrew Rogers' vision is in full bloom. WS Arts is happy to be a primary partner and to bring that vision into your home. The 15th annual Festival will be held April 12–21, 2013. Founded in 1998, RiverRun was inspired by the French Broad River near Brevard, North Carolina, where the festival was originally held. Each year since its inception, RiverRun has grown substantially. The 2013 Festival will feature 143 films, including 66 features and 77 shorts from 35 different countries. Along with the screenings of films from around the world, RiverRun plans many special events including panels and public parties. You can find out all the details about the 2013 Festival’s panels, Happy Hours and parties in the center pages of this edition. Comparable in size and scope to film festivals in Nashville, Atlanta and Boston, the festival offers an eclectic program from film studios, independent distributors and first-time filmmakers. As the Festival has obtained national and international recognition, RiverRun has attracted substantial press and increased levels of attendance. The Festival issued more than 15,500 tickets in 2012. Each year filmmakers and industry veterans are invited to come and spend a few days in Winston-Salem discussing their film with the audiences. Every year the Festival presents an award to a filmmaker or performer whose body of work represents the very highest levels of artistic achievement. Recent Master of Cinema and Emerging Master honorees and special guests have included: Paul Schneider (2012) Michael Shannon (2011), Andie MacDowell (2010), David Gordon Green (2010), Peter Bogdanovich (2010), Ramin Bahrani (2009), Bill Pullman (2008), Pam Grier (2008), Ned Beatty (2006), Cliff Robertson (2005) and Sissy Spacek (2004). All regular Festival screenings are $10 for adults and $8 for students (students must purchase tickets in person and present a valid student ID to receive discounted price). There are also special matinee prices Monday – Friday before 5:00 pm for $5. The 2013 Festival will mark the commencement of the PAGE 6
Community Cinema Initiative (CCI) to further RiverRun's community outreach efforts and ensure the Festival is accessible to audiences from varied socio-economic backgrounds. This initiative will further their mission of fostering a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures and perspectives of our world through great films and filmmakers. These films are free and open to the public! In addition to the regular programming RiverRun presents free public screenings to students and participating schools during the run of the annual Festival. This Education Outreach initiative is part of the most active component of RiverRun’s year-round activities and is called “Films with Class.” Through these efforts, RiverRun helps thousands of students understand the diversity of the human experience and become better global citizens. The Festival is committed to bringing you outstanding independent films not in wide release. Therefore, most of the films shown are not yet rated by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). In an effort to help you choose great films for yourself and your family, RiverRun has included content ratings for each movie featured in this magazine. The system includes three categories: • MT (Mature) – Significant mature content. • TN (Teen+) – May have some mature content. • FM (Family Friendly) – Suitable for children as young as 8-12. WS Arts is excited and proud to be a sponsor for RiverRun. We'll see you at the movies. All in the Arts, Ed WS ARTS MAGAZINE

Ramin Bahrani Brings North Carolina Film Makers to the Forefront By Staff
“Shooting films in North Carolina makes certain things easier. Not only are locations pretty easy to come by, people usually love for you to film there. In New York, people are kind of tired of you filming there. Plus, the South is known for its southern hospitality. In North Carolina they’re beyond friendly, which makes shooting really enjoyable.” Bahrani’s film Goodbye Solo was inspired by an elderly man from Winston-Salem.
R
amin Bahrani will bring his newest starstudded film, At Any Price, to RiverRun. Written and directed by Bahrani, the film is a departure from his low-profile independent films like Chop Shop, Man Push Cart and the locally inspired Goodbye Solo. Highly
accomplished and ultra-talented the young director, Bahrani, spent his formative years in the City of the Arts and is a favorite son of Winston-Salem. Born to Iranian parents, Ramin graduated from Columbia University where he majored in Film Studies and is ,today, an adjunct professor. Bahrani is no stranger to RiverRun. He attended the Festival in 2007 with his film Goodbye Solo, which was inspired by his observations of life in Winston-Salem and shot entirely in North Carolina. He was awarded RiverRun's Emerging Master Award and has been an avid supporter and advocate of RiverRun. "RiverRun in Winston-Salem has become a very prominent regional film festival, known not just nationally, but internationally” noted Bahrani. “It's now considered a place where distributors want their films to screen in order to get regional press." Bahrani is far from a novice even though At Any Price is his

first big-budget effort. Film critic Roger Ebert listed his film Chop Shop as the 6th best film of the decade and hailed him as "the director of the decade." Festivals in Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Sundance have also screened his films. His accolades include the "Someone to Watch" Independent Spirit Award, the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize for Best Film (for his films Man Push Cart, London and Goodbye Solo, Venice), a USA Fellowship, Sundance and Tribeca Film Lab grants and a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship. At Any Price is packed with some of the most recognized names in Hollywood. The film chronicles a family farm that is threatened by an unexpected crisis, further testing the relationship between a father (Dennis Quaid) and his rebellious son (Zac Efron). The film also stars Heather Graham.
At Any Price was selected to compete for the
Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival and was later screened as an official selection at the Telluride Film Festival and the 2012 Toronto Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics has purchased the film and will release it later this spring.
RiverRun patrons have the
chance to see it first on April 21 when RiverRun closes the Festival with the film. The screening also offers the unique Man Push Cart, about a Pakistani immigrant who runs a coffee cart in New York City, made Roger Ebert's list of the top 10 movies of 2006.
opportunity to participate in a live question and answer session with Bahrani, who will attend the Festival. n

Zach Clark Spikes the Eggnog with White Reindeer by Kimberly Gentry

F
ans of Zach Clark’s work might be surprised to learn he can be a bit sentimental—about Christmas, that is. The writer and director of the thought-provoking and edgy independent films, Vacation! and Modern Love Is Automatic, is a self-proclaimed lover of the Yuletide season. When Clark, 31, decided to explore the Christmas film genre he did so with a fresh and unexpected story in White Reindeer, part of this year’s RiverRun International Film Festival. “I believe a good Christmas movie is ultimately a movie about life on Earth,” Clark said on Kickstarter, an Internet funding platform for creative projects. “There are universal truths that can be expressed in a Christmas movie that can’t be expressed any other way. Life can be happy, sad, funny, magical, strange and dirty. White Reindeer is all of those things, too.” When reviewing Clark’s 2009 film Modern Love Is Automatic for The New York Times, Neil Genzlinger wrote that
PAGE 10
Clark “lands you, and his characters, at a place you weren’t expecting.” In White Reindeer, the unexpected is the relationship forged between the two principal characters. Suzanne is a 32-yearold real-estate agent whose husband is killed. In the aftermath, she learns of her husband’s other woman, a 22-year-old stripper named Fantasia. Under the strange spell of Christmas, the two grieving women form an unlikely friendship and Suzanne begins to explore Fantasia’s world. “They should hate each other, but they don’t,” said Clark on Kickstarter. “And, they shouldn’t become friends, but they do. And, this is Christmas. This is what it means to me. Would this happen any other time of the year?” Clark is a 2004 film school graduate from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. When recently discussing his path to filmmaking with Indiewire, Clark also noted his other “film school,” the Video Vault, a rental store in Alexandria, Va., where he worked during high school and college. “The store specialized in cult/exploitation, classic Hollywood and Euro art house movies,” he said. “I wholly credit them with shaping my tastes and style.” Clark returned to northern Virginia to film White Reindeer where the story is also set. Clark’s films have been noted for their provocative storytelling and high production quality. His work has played at festivals throughout the United States and Europe, including South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Clark currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. n

UNC-SA News
Fresh off a win at Sundance, UNCSA alum returns to Winston-Salem sat down with WS Arts to reflect on his time spent in WinstonSalem and his reactions to winning at Sundance. Q - WS Arts: At what age or time in life did filmmaking cross from a hobby to something more serious? A - Hartigan: Not really until film school. I went to high school in Virginia where I was very active in theatre and I always thought I wanted to be an actor. I was only interested in film acting though, and the idea of going to college for theatre and doing exercises pretending to be a tree or a cat or something really didn't appeal to me, so I went to film school as a kind of back door route to film acting. Once I was in, though, and really got into the nuts and bolts of film theory and filmmaking, I was hooked and I immediately started losing my hair and my good looks so it worked out great. Q. WS Arts: UNCSA was the only film school to which you applied. What drew you? A. - Hartigan: A friend I looked up to in high school first told Chad Hartigan

Q. - WS Arts: This is Martin Bonner was accepted at Sundance and went on to win the 2013 Best of NEXT Audience Award. What was it like to be part of Sundance? A. - Hartigan: Sundance was overwhelming, in only the best way. I found that everyone, from the critics to the industry to the audiences, were just really supportive of the films in general and really excited about being there and being a part of that event. I loved meeting all the other filmmakers in my category and hope to see them all at other festivals throughout the year so I can finally watch their movies, since I was too busy to catch them there. But yeah, I had a bit of a cynical view of Sundance before going and meeting everyone involved and I couldn't have been more wrong about that. mild mainstay of CAO’s lineup of otherwise stronger cigars. Tim Ozgener, president of the Nashville-based company, reaches for a CAO Gold Lonsdale in the morning when he wants “a nice, smooth, buttery cigar to
accompany my morning coffee.” A couple of summers ago, he and his team decided to change things up. CAO unveiled the new Gold Vintage line. Long overdue, I was excited when this change was made. Each Gold Vintage includes a delicate exterior leaf grown in Ecuador in 2004. This was a year that, according to CAO’s website “offered the perfect combination of climate, rainfall, and soil” in the South American country. The binder is Nicaraguan and the habano-seed filler is a combination of tobaccos from Jamastran and Estelí. This new blend, manufactured at the CAO Fabrica de Tabacos in Estelí, is offered in two formats: a figurado (4.9 x 60) and the slightly more stout Crémant (6 x 52).

WS ARTS MAGAZINE
WS Arts Magazine has designed and implemented a ratings system where cigars receive an E.D.S (really...I didn't name the rating system after myself) of 1-5. Each review explains, in easy to understand terms, why we chose that particular rating for a given cigar. Our ratings system is described as follows: 1 E.D.S - These are cigars of last resort. They are questionable even if only mowing the yard or planting a garden. 2 E.D.S - These cigars make tolerable companions while you wash your car. They aren't looking for attention, nor should they! 3 E.D.S - These are pretty respectable cigars but may still fall short. We recommend them for the golf course, the back porch with one of your uninitiated friends, or for the after wedding party (for the husband of your best girlfriend who thinks he knows everything about cigars). 4 E.D.S - Now we’re talking. Enjoy these fine cigars after a delicious meal or with your favorite cocktail. Again, I prefer Fridays at Single Brothers (or my Cigar Room). Join me! 5 E.D.S - Respect your elders! These complex treats are true works of art. They deserve Coltrane, good friends, and your favorite adult tasty treat. Only the best! n

Art Scene RiverRun International Film Festival Volunteer Spotlight: Dave & Sally Harman
W
S
ally Harman began volunteering for RiverRun International Film Festival in 2007, after reading an article about RiverRun in the WinstonSalem Journal. Thinking it would be a great way to meet new people and give back to her community at the same time, she was not disappointed and convinced Dave to join her the following year. They have returned to volunteer for the Festival every year since and have held a variety of positions, from ushering at film screenings, to providing transportation, office help and even serving cocktails at RiverRun VIP events. The Harmans have been members of the film screening committee for the past four years. When asked about the films they have seen from their years at RiverRun, they list The Baker and The Topsy Twins among their all-time favorites. They keep coming back every year not only for the variety of quality films, but also to reunite with other loyal RiverRun volunteers. “We love being part of the excitement and energy of the Festival, which is such a tremendous community event,” said Sally. Witnessing the growth of the Festival over the years has been an amazing experience for the Harmans. The Festival has grown in scope, the number of films screened and in attendance each year. RiverRun highlights the film industry and the arts scene that is so alive in our “City of Arts & Innovation.” “It’s always exciting to meet the actors, directors and producers who are involved with the films shown at RiverRun. It’s an intriguing part of our society that we never would have experienced were it not for RiverRun Film Festival,” said Dave. n

hat do pig ear sandwiches, collard gumbo and squirrel have in common? If you are a Southerner, born-and-raised, these items may have crossed your plate and maybe your stomach is already growling. If you are stunned that squirrels are edible and you had to Google collards, then we welcome you to the South, where the food culture is as diverse as the people who call the region home and learn about these Southern delicacies and more in the food documentary, *Pride and Joy.* The Southern Foodways Alliance, an institute of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, chronicles the diverse food cultures of the changing American South in its film *Pride and Joy* which will be screened at The RiverRun International Film Festival on April 14 from 4:00 pm - 5:45 pm at the HanesBrands Theatre. Director Joe York will be present to discuss his film at the Festival. This 60-minute documentary highlights the colorful flavors of unique dishes found only below the Mason-Dixon line. It presents intimate portraits of people and places while asking important questions about our common culture. York visits dozens of men and women who dedicate their lives to growing, catching, cooking, serving, or studying food and drink in the South. Following the screening, RiverRun will host the Southern Lacavore Bazaar at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts from 5:45 pm – 8:00 pm. Ticketholders can enjoy special complimentary food and beverages that will boast regional vendors, a robust selection of local farmers and cooks, as well as live Appalachian music to give attendees an authentic taste of the South. Admittance for both events is free and on a first come, first serve basis. The *Pride and Joy* screening is sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council. n
