How can Kiwanis sponsors & faculty advisors help?

The Key Club District Convention (DCON) is for the Key Club members, but the success of this year-end event depends on our Kiwanis clubs and faculty advisors. How can you help? PAPERWORK: Make sure all school district and Key Club paperwork is completed and filed. ATTEND: The ratio of advisors to Key Club members is 1 to 12. You can attend as an advisor and help meet this ratio. The “Advisor Responsibility Form” lists the duties of advisors, which can be shared by a group of advisors for each club. Plus – it’s fun and exciting to attend! Remember your earplugs! ☺ HELP WITH FUNDRAISING: During these challenging times, Key Club members can really use your help. Many Kiwanis clubs often have a budget line item to help with DCON costs. Some Kiwanis clubs use the “1/3 plan”: Kiwanis pays 1/3 of the total costs; Key Club pay 1/3; and the individual member would pay the final 1/3 of the costs. For Kiwanis clubs sponsoring multiple clubs, just remember that any help is appreciated. Help the Key Clubs organize and implement fundraisers throughout the year to bring total costs down. REGISTRATION/LOGISTICS: Advisors are needed to ensure that forms are thoroughly and correctly completed and payment is remitted with the forms. Advisors also need to arrange the travel to/from convention. RECOGNITION: Encourage your Key Club to apply for contests and awards. For more information, refer to: www.cnhkeyclub.org then go to Recognition Forms.

What Happens at DCON?

Convention includes many exciting events. Friday night includes: workshops, the first general session, and a Service Expo (including booths for the district level candidates and those seeking endorsement to run for an International position). Some of the workshops are specifically for advisors!

What about Transportation?

Air: Check if group sales or special deals are available. Ground transportation is available from Sacramento airport: www.sacairports.org/int/parking/ground_ transportation.html Trains: Amtrak: www.amtrak.com

Saturday includes: caucus session (members hear from candidates seeking office or endorsement, workshops (including some for advisors), general sessions, and the House of Delegates (voting for officers). In the evening, while students are dancing at the Governor’s ball or enjoying alternative activities like karaoke or video games, advisors can attend an ice cream social. Sunday includes a non-denominational service, the “Walk for Life” (to raise money for Pediatric Trauma Program), and then the closing general session! Meals are provided all day Saturday (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and Sunday for breakfast. DCON attendees are on their own for Friday night dinner. There are many options for dinner around the convention center, and a list of restaurants will be posted on the website a few weeks before DCON.

Auto/Bus: Some hotels have parking fees. Chartered buses can be shared with other clubs to lower costs. SHUTTLE: FREE shuttle service is available for select hotels that are not within walking distance from the convention center. The shuttle timetable will be posted at hotels and the convention center.
