Send a message to God Enjoy this annual international festival in Padang Galak area, where traditional giant kites are made and flown competitively by locals to send a message to the Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. A gamelan orchestra plays music throughout the festival.

Dance with half a million people
Enjoy a sea of colour as amazing floats and costumed performers wind their way through the streets of London. Revellers are seen dressed in loud and garish costumes, with dancers taking to the streets. Sunday is the day for children and the next day is for adults. With the streets of London packed with street bands, Calypso music and food stalls, you will get to see some 50,000 performers and 40 sound systems. Go there: London public transport operates additional buses to serve the Carnival. Allow extra time for your journey as a number of local Tube stations are closed.
Watch the elaborately attired dancers on the streets of Asakusa for Japan’s largest samba carnival, shaking their tail feathers to the Brazilian beat as they work their way from Sensoji Temple to Tawaramachi Station. This Carnival attracts more than half a million people every year. Tip: Be sure to book your hotel in advance to secure prime locations. Admission to the Carnival is free, but the weather and the large crowd of spectators can heat up the area quickly. Pack a bottle of water and sunscreen before leaving the hotel. Explore Italy’s bone church
Have you ever heard of churches made entirely of bones? Visit Capuchin Crypt, Rome, Italy, named after the Capuchin monks. Its ceilings and walls are covered with the bones of 4,000 of them who lived there between 1528 and 1870. Namdaemun gate reopens @ 24.2 mn USD in Seoul
Namdaemun, or South Gate, was the oldest preserved wooden monument in Seoul. Built in 1398, it was set on fire in 2008 by a man retaliating against the Korean government. While the stone base of Namdaemun remained after the fire, the wooden part of the structure was completely destroyed. The reconstruction took five years and $24.4 million USD to complete with the help of 35,000 different people. Known as the Sukhothai Historical Park, its main monument is the Wat Mahathat, a giant monastery with a temple and cemetery. The park consists of about 200 monuments, including stunning Buddhist temples, statues of Buddha and royal palaces. Kebabs are by far one of the most famous dishes of Turkey, renowned world over. Turkish Shish (sis) Kebabs and Doner Kebabs are famous. Adana Kebab, commonly eaten in southeastern Turkey, is served over bread (type of roti) and accompanied with roasted bell peppers, tomatoes and onions. Do try the Beyti Kebab which is served with tomato sauce and yoghurt.
Dolma A popular vegetable dish, it consists of vegetables stuffed with spiced rice or grains. Some may also add meat. Those vegetable dishes cooked in olive oil are served cold and most often do not contain meat.
Turkish Delight (Lokum) Made primarily from gel of starch and sugar, these sweets are found in many shapes, sizes and flavours. Generally served in small cubes, Turkish Delights are dusted with icing sugar to prevent it from sticking.
Baklava A popular Middle Eastern dessert, it consists of layers of phyllo pastry intermixed with nuts and sugar syrup. Pistachio baklava is well known in the south eastern Turkish city of Gaziantep.

Vikram Madhok, Managing Director, Abercrombie & Kent India Private Limited, talks about his recent visit to Indonesia and how this trip was an emotional experience for him. In this article, he narrates his stay at some of the best resorts of Indonesia and his favourite restaurants in Indonesian cities.
White-water rafting down the Ayung River in Ubudu is a thrilling activity and the best way to see Bali’s lush tropical rainforest. Nusa Dua Our first stop was at Amanusa Bali Resort which is located in the southern part of the island of Bali or we can say, across one of the finest golf courses along the the Nusa Dua beach ensuring privacy and serenity at its best.
Activities at the resort Amanusa offers options of hiring a luxury catamaran to nearby islands, complete with a barbecue lunch and beach activities. Instead we indulged ourselves in one of Amanusa’s cooking classes which starts with an early morning tour of the local vegetable and fish markets to select ingredients. Then we headed back to cook a few of Indonesia’s favorite dishes like Bakso, Ayam Goreng and Sambal and thereafter to enjoy our creations over lunch. For sightseeing, we went to the Uluwatu temple located high above the sea on an enormous limestone outcrop. The view from there of the sunset, the beach, the blue sea, the cliffs and the temple is breathtaking. My Tip: Arrive at 5 pm to see the beautiful sunset at Uluwatu temple and enjoy the Kecak fire and trance dance performance.
I suggest Explore the terrain of Nusa Dua in a relaxed manner by cycling along bougainvillea-shaded lanes, passing through villages specialising in various arts and crafts. Other areas of interest are the beach strips and streets of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Sanur, full of restaurants and bars as well as antique, handicraft, fashion and souvenir shops.

My pick of restaurants in Nusa Dua In Nusa Dua, Kayuputi in the Hotel St. Regis Bali serves amazing French, international and Asian fusion. At Seminyak, we loved Sardine and Ku De Ta. Sardine serves great fish and seafood, and it comes with an excellent view of the rice fields. Ku De Ta on the beach-front of Seminyak is by far the most happening place in the area. Located on natural rocks above the Indian Ocean, Rock Bar at the Ayana Resort in Bali is the island’s most glam sunset and after-dark destination.
Borobudur is best seen at dawn, when the air is fresh and full of birdsong. As the mist begins to lift, the sun scales the surrounding volcanoes and terraced fields, and highlights the stone reliefs and the many faces of Buddha. woodcarvings and the village of Celuk is home to Ubud
Lamak serves modern Asian and European cuisine with extensive vegetarian options. Must enjoy Cultural performance No visit to Ubud is complete without seeing one of the popular cultural performances in and around Ubud. We saw the Legong Dance at the Ubud Palace and other recommended performances are of course the Kecak fire and the trance dance that we saw at Uluwatu Temple. The Ramayana ballet and the barong dance are also very popular.
Our next stop was Ubud, Bali’s cultural capital. The Amandari Resort is perched on a high cliff above the Ayung River. Every evening, gamelan players perform from the music pavilion behind the pool and this is a magical experience.
A paradise for art and craft enthusiasts Ubud offers a wealth of arts and crafts with a myriad of small shops, art galleries, museums, painters’ studios and the colourful Pasar Seni market which trades in a wide range of clothing, sarongs and gift items. The nearby villages of Tegallang and Jati are noted for their
numerous jewellers, some of whom are known for custom-made jewellery pieces. South of Tabanan, in Pejaten, one can find traditional pottery.
My pick of restaurants in Ubud We enjoyed the Mozaic, where advance reservations are recommended. The amazing cuisine of Franco-American chef Chris Salans would be garlanded with Michelin stars had this been in Europe or America. My Tip: Eat here in the evening, as a meal can take a few hours, and tables are laid out in a magical candle-lit tropical garden. The second option is Lamak, you can sit outside in the lush tropical garden, looking
out at the bustling open kitchen, or at a romantic table upstairs in one of the few air-conditioned dining rooms in Ubud.
Spa indulgence Amandari spa offers a selection of wellness and beauty treatments which are either available in the privacy of guest suites or in a Bale overlooking the Ayung Valley.
Central Java Our last, but most spirited stop was Amanjiwo Yogyakarta. The location overlooks Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist sanctuary, in the rural heartland of Central Java. From the top gallery of Borobudur, one can enjoy panoramic views of Central Java. My Tip: Later in the day, visits can be made to appreciate the historic and cultural context of this enduring monument. A personal guide is a must as they bring to life the knowledge contained within the reliefs.

59 I’m quite a lazy traveller If I get time, I like to go to New York or places that I know well because I always believe that there is so much to discover still in a place that you’ve liked. Over the years, I’ve become a wanderer and a bit of a dreamer. I love to travel alone. I’m very comfortable in my own company and I take several holidays alone. I like to get up late, walk around, take a book and sit down in a park and basically spend some time with myself. I also like understanding the culture and intricacies of any destination I visit in great depth.
I’d love to go into Space. Everyone seems to be going there, so why not me?
New York is my favourite destination with or without a girlfriend. I love the vibe and the energy of the city from when I lived there to study acting. Another favourite destination for me would be Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I stay away from adventure holidays… The roller coasters there are the maximum adventure I can take.
My idea of a romantic destination For me, romance depends more on who you are with, rather than where you are. As long as you are in love with the person, any place can become romantic, such as the winters in Delhi, and for instance Goa in February when it’s not so crowded. Romance can happen anywhere. For me, romance depends more on who you are with, rather than where you are.
My favourite hotels I’ll pick three from Mumbai itself, Taj Land’s End, Bandra, Grand Hyatt, Kalina and Taj Hotel in Colaba, which I think is the pride of our city. What makes a hotel appealing for me is the vibe when you enter it. Room service is very important, so, if a hotel manages to plate up a good burger, butter chicken or kali dal for me, then I’m very happy. A crazy travel story When we were shooting for Rockstar in Prague, we left the main city for one of the smaller centres and after a drive of three hours, we reached our hotel only to find out that there were just 4 rooms available for a film crew of 80! So we had to drive around for quite a bit finding other hotels.

Within India, I’d love to explore Madhya Pradesh as well as South India. Other then that, I’d love to visit Masai Marai in Kenya and go on a safari which I had done when I was very young and I would love to relive this. South America is another dream destination for me. And lastly, I’d love to go into Space. Everyone seems to be going there, so why not me?

“I am like nine travellers in one” “Travelling opens up your mind a lot, it promises you so much,” says Neha Dhupia while talking about her travel mantra with HolidayTalk. “I’m like nine travellers in one. I can go from going hiking, living in a tent and backpacking to travelling first-class, staying in the suite room of a luxury hotel and ordering room service to travelling with excess baggage. When travelling in India, I travel really light and when travelling out of the country I travel with really heavy bags, because you want to get all the things that you can and take in all the things that you see. Also, I refer to a lot of websites before travelling. Being in the industry, you have the tendency to take luxury for granted, but I try not to get caught up with the fact that I’m an actor and I deserve everything that’s luxurious even on a holiday. If I’m going to Europe I don’t mind staying in a property that may not be equipped with every little luxury. In the same way, when I go to Italy I do have a meal at a Michelin star restaurant as well as have my 3-Euro pizza too.”
Canada - Something for everyone Canada gives you a picture-perfect shot in your camera, no matter where you go. I can say this because I’ve done a few adventure trips around Whistler, Victoria, etc. Whale watching is something that’s really fascinating. Canada as a country is really big on adventure sports.
Sushi - My favourite cuisine Well, the best Indian food that I can eat is what my mother cooks. However, a cuisine I really enjoy is sushi. I like experimenting with my food and while travelling I like experimenting with the local food of the country.

An excellent example of combining rural, eco, responsible and adventure tourism along with having a never-before encounter with ‘Millions of Fireflies’. How about lying down below a tree in a pin-drop silent area with total darkness, watching a million fireflies lighting up the sky and no artificial light to damage the view or experience? When I was first given the option of spending my weekend in ‘Purushwadi’ (four hours drive from Mumbai, near Igatpuri), I was not really enthusiastic considering the travel time and village experience. However, the trip turned out to be more adventurous, full of fun and way above my expectations. Comfortable camping tents are placed in the middle of the jungle (about 0.5kms outside the village) on a mountain overlooking several other mountains and a valley with a view of a river and farms. Meals at a local villager’s home, sunset treks, local games, indulging in local day-to-day activities and taking a swim in the river were some of the highlights of my adventure. But the focus of my tour was – Shining Dancers.
Live the experience From afar, it looks like they are blinking simultaneously but when you get closer, you realise some blink 3 times per second (males) and some blink once per second (females). It’s almost impossible to photograph them because it’s just too dark to take photos without a flash, and if you take it with a flash you can’t see the light of the fireflies. So you just have to go yourself and live the experience…

After a thrilling sunset trek experience with my fellow companions on the tour and our guides, we all sat below a huge banyan tree right outside our tent site. The sun was going down and we were busy chatting. Suddenly, everybody went quiet as they saw few glimpses of the beautiful fireflies dancing on the tree. With the campsite getting enveloped in the night shadow, more and more fireflies started dancing around. As there was no real light except fireflies and moonlight, I felt like sailing into the darkness. But when I looked at the countless fireflies above and around me, I was fascinated, staring into the dark I became a part of the moment created by the beautiful, tiny and yet majestic fliers. I watched their lights shimmer, as they appeared and disappeared in the night sky.
