MICE grows in the Middle East Expecting an increase of 20,000 business tourists in 2012, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), GIBTM’s partner and supporter, is strongly emphasising on attracting the Business Tourism sector, while significantly upgrading its meetings and conference facilities to further provide businesses with world-class facilities. pproximately 1.3 million of the 1.8 million guests across 115 hotels and hotel apartments in the Emirate are business travellers, out of which 2,15,000 guests arrive in the region specifically for MICE related activities. “In 2015, we aim to become the number one meetings destination in the region, a top-100 meetings destination in the world, host four times the number of current MICE events and double the number of MICE visitor arrivals,” said Gillian Taylor, Business Tourism Manager, ADTA. “We support Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) and Abu Dhabi in hosting an important exhibition like GIBTM, which assist immensely in developing the MICE Tourism. We have always been very active, promoting our MICE properties across the Middle East through our local and international sales offices. Our participation at GIBTM has assisted us in further developing this sector and showcasing our
products and offerings,” explained Omer Kaddouri, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Rotana Hotels.
Director Overseas Promotion & Inward Missions, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai).
“The inventory of the hotel rooms to be managed by Rotana in Abu Dhabi will increase to more than 3,000 within the coming few months. Although we are not really anticipating a surge of ‘Mass Tourism’ in Abu Dhabi, we hope to appeal to the more discerning tourists and MICE organisers and GIBTM will be a huge contributor to this,” he added.
Oman Ministry of Tourism is one of the first exhibitors to sign up for GIBTM 2012 and is keen to engage with business travellers. “The planned convention center and airport will have modern facilities and will help position Oman as one of the main business travel destinations in the region,” said Khalid Al Zadjali, Head - Overseas Promotion, Oman Ministry of Tourism. “Our aim for participating in GIBTM 2012 is to recognise new trends, best practices and also benefit from the abundant networking opportunities,” he added.
Ranked among the top 10 most popular business destinations in 2011, Dubai is a key MICE destination followed by Abu Dhabi, which is currently attracting 27 per cent of events staged in the region. The Capital is anticipated to attract 48 per cent of events planned in the MENA region in 2012. “MICE forms an important part of tourism and Dubai is the regional hub for exhibition and conference business and has been attracting a large pool of business travellers to the city. ATM has seen prominent interest ahead of this year’s event, as the visitors remained undaunted by the political turmoil that gripped the region. Arabian Travel Market is witnessing strong online visitor interest almost four months ahead of the event. The number of tourists heading to the Kingdom is expected to reach 15.8 million by 2014 up from around 13 million in 2010, according to Business Monitor International (BMI).

ollowing major commitments on considerable investments for new cruise terminals and associated infrastructure, the Middle East is recognised as a key growth market. The future potential of regional Cruise Tourism will once again be the highlight at Arabian Travel Market 2012. The positive outlook for the region’s cruise sector enhances mutual tourism potential across the GCC. According to Reed Travel Exhibitions, the organisers of Arabian Travel Market, the expansion of regional facilities and potential increase in revenue from tourism will provide a way for further port development throughout the Gulf. Capable of handling two to three cruise ships, Qatar is investing US$ 5.5 billion in a cruise ship terminal in Doha. Oman is working to transform Mina Qaboos into a dedicated cruise port as part of the government’s ‘Vision 2020’ plan.
The number of visitors will increase by 6.7 per cent year-on-year by 2014 boosted by religious, business and domestic tourism. Religious Tourism remains the main reason for overseas visitors. More than half of inbound visitors travel to Mecca and Medina, making it a major focus for investment in hotels and leisure development. Visitor registrations from Saudi Arabia are up by 118 per cent from this time in 2011 at 203. Meanwhile, the number of visitors inter-
ested in buying travel products and services from the Kingdom has risen 116 per cent to 1,168. Pre-event visitor registration for the four-day Arabian Travel Market show, which opens on April 30, 2012, is already up by 132 per cent from the same time in 2011 with nearly 2,000 visitors.

T
he much-anticipated 6th Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM 2012), scheduled March 26-28, 2012 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC), is set to witness a number of new initiatives. Some of the world’s influential industry leaders are expected to deliver a robust educational programme designed to stimulate interactive, focussed delegate discussions and examine the industry’s key trends and topics for global MICE industry professionals. As trends indicate, business travel is becoming increasingly necessary to conduct trade, the UAE reported a 7.6% increase in air traffic in 2011 compared to 2010 and recorded the largest number of hotel rooms underway in the MENA region. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been named as the top MENA MICE destinations according to the fifth Middle East Meetings Industry Research report, undertaken by Reed Travel Exhibitions in March 2011. The capital is anticipated to attract 48% of events planned in the MENA region in 2012. GIBTM for the first time will hold free-to-attend, interactive Arabic sessions for all attendees at the show. Ali Al Saloom of Ask-Ali.com, one of the fastest rising media personalities and a charismatic public speaker in the Gulf Region, will discuss how business travel provides a huge opportunity in the region linking this industry with Arabic traditions and culture.

Never to compromise on services, Palm Jet has constructed the first FBO (Fixed Base Operations) in Iraq with passenger terminal facilities. Inaugurated by Hadi Al Amiri, Minister of Transport Iraq on June 1, 2011, Al Dewan Hall (the official name of the VIP terminal) in Baghdad International Airport provides luxurious services to VIP passengers. Palm Jet is an aviation support and charter company, which owns and manages small VIP Jet aircrafts with 4 to 13 seats, providing services to VVIPs, Royal clientele, people who require special attention
300 Hosted Buyers with high spending power are also expected to attend GIBTM, an indication of highvalue business in light of figures, which showed that 44% of Hosted Buyers attending GIBTM 2011 had an annual meetings budget of more than US$ 1million.

and medical ambulance flights. The Company operates and charters various flights to ME sectors, delivering some on contract charter basis and some on trip lease.
We are not just an Aircraft Company which sells charters and tickets, but also provide VIP terminal facilities and sell services which are unique in the region and are also involved with the management of the terminals. Even if we call it FBO, which is meant for general aviation, we do have commercial aviation attached with it to enhance the services to normal commercial passengers. Passengers are met and assisted on arrival and departure, luxury cars (Limo) are used for transportation of passengers from the aircrafts to the VIP Terminal for special handling at a very economical price. The concept is highly appreciated in Iraq, Baghdad as we are the first one to take initiative for the infrastructure development at International Airports in Iraq.
The VIP terminal handling services are priced very reasonably to extend the services to normal economy class passengers too, allowing them to experience the services which were available for the rich and important passengers of Iraq. Iraq is coming back on the international travellers map and Palm Jet wishes to be a part of the industry to support and expedite the process to make sure the passengers feel comfortable and secure when they travel to Iraq. The business sector is growing in Iraq as in June, 2011, there were 160 passengers coming or leaving through VIP Terminal a month, where the number of charter flights was ranging from two to three flights daily with a rate of two to three passengers every flight. It’s due to the improvement in security situation and increase in travel to Iraq. The terminal enjoys high security protection under responsibility of a private security company G4S, renowned for strict policy of compliance internationally. There are passports, Immigration and custom offices at the terminal. In addition, Iraqi Intelligence has their presence. Now within a span of few minutes, the passport, exit visa, stamp and digitally recorded fingerprints are being checked while the escort takes the passport and reservation information to the registration office to record reserva-
tion (Boarding Pass), which was a real dilemma before, as it required at least half an hour for the entire process. This terminal provides services to passengers flying on commercial flights like Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Royal Jordanian, Iraqi Airways, ME Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines and private VIP Jets. We have more than 200 travel agents for Jupiter Group and all have interconnected services, hence we acquire their support on any clientele we receive. The companies dealing with business jets prefer to be discreet, hence, there is a constant need to create more awareness among the travel trade and we also encouragethe same. The numbers have increased in Business travellers by 40 per cent in 2011 over 2010 while MICE constitutes 15 to 20 per cent rise and VFR constitutes the remaining. Palm Jet have plans of constructing one more VIP service facility launch in Basra Airport, south of Iraq, in June 2012. Bureaucracies in the market and lack of awareness are the challenges which our Charter Company faces and is trying to constantly improve with new concepts, consultancies and information.

How can you differentiate Silversea from others? Silversea is unique for its aspects of all-inclusive, all ocean-view suite accommodation, up to 95 per cent with private balcony, in-suite beverage cabinet stocked with individual preference, on-board spending credit up to US$ 1,500 per suite, a full spectrum of entertainment and enrichment, in-suite dining 24-hour a day, complimentary transportation to town in most ports. In addition, Silversea offers more destinations and ports of call then any of its direct competitors. How much awareness do you think is there in the Middle East regarding the Cruise industry? The Middle East cruise market is still in its infancy compared to the more mature markets like US and UK. While hotels see good business from the Middle East market, I think the local markets are still to discover the benefits of a cruise. The industry and the individual cruise lines have much to do to grow in this potential source market. Besides usual leisure, holiday and MICE travel, what are the other segments that a cruiseline can cater to? The majority of Silversea’s guests travel for leisure. However, the ships offer a strong alternative to traditional hotels for the MICE market. The all-inclusive aspect of the product means that charter, conference and event organisers can easily budget their meeting or event.
