PAGE Dear Reader, With changing climate, the month of September is now filled with rain and nice weather, which entices us to hold our events outdoors. But beware! Be prepared with a back-up plan if you don’t want your program to turn into a damp squib. Choose only those hotels that are willing to hold a banquet room for the day in case of an emergency, whether it is an outdoor team building exercise (cover story) or a gala evening. We have concentrated on the more popular MICE destinations in this issue, three cities in France and Perth in Australia. Domestically, southern India is concentrating on MICE and developing great infrastructure for it in Coimbatore - the Indian commercial centre, Hyderabad – the technology hub and Bengaluru - the buzzing dream city. Read all about them. In this issue we also spoke to Chapman Freeborn on how to charter flights for a group movement… and believe it or not it’s actually affordable! Enjoy the adventure experiences around the world that we have covered for you. Deepa Sethi Editor

IT&CM India made its debut in Delhi NCR with much optimism towards ensuring a more prominent place for India on the MICE map of the world. The event saw a modest congregation of buyers and sellers intent on making the most of this first-ever show in India. Pre-IT&CM India activities began with educational sessions at the 7th conventions India conclave (CIC). Veteran speaker, Martin Sirk, CEO, International, Congress and Convention Association, gave the keynote address on the opening day of the event. He highlighted how a nascent market like India needs to evolve to become more competitive in the international MICE business. Renowned as a forum for professionals in the Indian conventions industry with the main aim to exchange information and opinions, as well as encourage key decision makers to organise more conferences in the country, CIC formed the education component of IT&CM India’s inaugural programme, introducing topics like, ‘The Science & Art of Winning A Bid – Whatever It Takes’, ‘Sponsorship / Maintaining ROI’ and ‘The Vision of New International Convention Centre & Trends in the Exhibition Industry In India – Challenges and the Future. ‘ Chander Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, in his speech, acknowledged that visa issue was a concern for international visitors to India, and hence international events in India, and informed that the government was taking proactive steps to ensure visa on arrival for certain countries. The three day-event, held from August 21-23, 2012, at India Expo Centre and Mart, Greater Noida, provided a great opportunity to create awareness about the nuances of the MICE business and was the first international event of this kind to be held in India.

Fun in Teamwork Ipshita Sengupta Nag

Corporate offsites are great opportunities for team-building. Companies are looking at including creative and fun-filled activities in their itinerary to foster this camaraderie. MICEtalk puts together a platter of some of the most interesting things to do as being recommended by the National Tourist Offices of various MICE destinations. Spread across continents, each of these requires participants to work together...and compete. Why?

Interactive Drumming and Singing in South Africa Where? At scenic locations in South Africa

When? The best time for this outdoor activity is when the summer heat has given way to cooler months. Remember that when most of the world enjoys summer, South Africa enjoys its winter.

Music is the pivotal core around which African communities are structured. Drums have been played in Africa for thousands of years. So what better way of exposing your clients to the rich enjoyment and fulfilling experience of African drumming, than by giving them each a handcrafted Djembe drum to play.

What? The various sessions are designed and led by a team of dynamic young facilitators who emphasise on building team spirit. The event is started with a cacophonous rumble to show guests the chaotic possibilities of not working together. Only then is the music built level by level, until participants start beating out thunderous African rhythms as a group.

USP

Another aspect of this performance is African singing. There is a great unifying power in getting the group to sing, where they are taught tonal melodies as well as traditional African songs. The interactive drum experience is the perfect way to add dimension to your conference opening, break away time or bush braai (barbecue). A session lasts for about an hour.
