PORTFOLIO
Hi, I am Ashish Jain a student of design and I like to learn by doing.
About me
I am motivated to understand products and perceive design as a tool, to create tangible and intangible products to enhance lifestyle. Problem solving and creating interactive products is my design direction. I am exploring new ways to understand design and bettering my approach to problem solving.

GROUP PROJECT PLASTIC ENCLOSURE DESIGN
TEAM MEMBERS Ashish Jain Navin Devnani
med container
A plastic mould-able container which would contain medicines. This container has a special opening mechanism which changes the experience of the user to operate it. Only the person who owns and knows how to open the container would be able to open it. *An assignment of manufacturing process, where we had to design a container which is made out of plastic and give it an interesting opening.
MED CONTAINER
DESIGN DIRECTION & IDEATION Creating an experience where user can twist the cap in the clockwise and counter clockwise direction one after the other in order to open it.
EXISTING COUNTER CLOCKWISE OPENING
TO ACHIEVE NON CONVENTIONAL EXPERIENCE
CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE OPENING
A threading which is both clockwise and counter clockwise would give the experience we wanted to achieve. We went through a lots of ideation process to understand the tolerances and shape constraints required to process plastic.

EDGE FLANGE SNAP
Feature has been given during the process of hemming. The type of hemming done is flat hemming. The lid has been given curl hemming with flat ones.
HEMMING Feature gives the flange’s open edges the strength and reduces flexing.
Feature has been given during the process of blanking to reduce the gap between the disjoint flanges which would be joined after bending process.
HINGING Feature has been given by the process of beading or curling. Relief notches has been given to achieve just right tolerance between the flanges of lid and base.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT PRODUCT FORM REDESIGN
TWISTRILL This power drill has the shape derived from the feel of the functionality of the drill which is rotation and hence the drill bit looks like twisting. This shape would give this drill a dierent visual experience and also comfort because of its soft organic features. It would be a break from the existing shapes of conventional power drills. * An assignment of redesigning the morphology of a product on the basis of it’s functionality.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT TECHNO AESTHETIC DETAILING
Dispenso This cellotape dispenser give users a better hold on the way they dispense the cellotape. This dispenser is portable, light and pocketable. It helps user to use the tape in most of the ways they want to. * An assignment of redesigning a product on the basis of aesthetics and technology involved in it keeping the function same.

CELLO-TAPE DISPENSER MARKET STUDY AND USER RESEARCH
Although there are thousand kinds of Cellotape dispensers available but users still end up using ...
The conventional Cellotape dispensers available in the market are more of desk type of dispensers. Being used by desks they are made heavy to be stable ( or could be used as paper weights) and also good looking .
Conventional Heavy Desk type
There is a whole dierent market which are into making of beautiful , toy like, interactive, colourful cello-tape dispensers. They look good on desks and kids like them too.
Lifestyle Sculpted Toys Colourful
Dispensers which are multifunctional takes a good place where the users are functional enthusiastic and want to reduce the number of tools when they can have many in one.
Multifunctional Compact Meaningful
...
Why?
And what not!
DISPENSO
CELLO-TAPE DISPENSER MARKET STUDY AND USER RESEARCH
Because...
To Achieve....
Not made for different sizes of tape
Not pocket-able
Existing dispensers are not made for different sizes of tape, but users generally buy only one kind of dispenser. Therefore users end up using other available sharp tools if they want to use the different sizes of tapes. It’s really a hassle to carry dispensers. They are not really pocket-able.
Do not facilitate jugaad ways of using Cello-tape Usage like winding , wrapping and reaching smaller spaces are not felicitated.
Among many activities users perform with the cellotape the way they use cellotape differs. May be they are wrapping the tape to join their old broken chair or the guy has to carry the tape on the stairs to stick the balloon for the decoration. To dispense cellotape in awkward positions or to use them in a different way all together the conventional dispensers don’t facilitate the purpose.
We need a kind of dispenser which...
Felicitates most of the kinds of uses of tape.
Is Pocketable
Is Compatible to various sizes of cellotape.

CELLO-TAPE DISPENSER IDEATION AND FINAL IDEA
Alternative concepts...
Final idea...
Conceptualisation focuses on making the dispenser much more simpler, compact and user friendly. The function of the dispenser to grip the tape has a big inuence on the shape of the dispenser. The dispenser needs to have a exible component to grip and secure it to the inner side of the tape which may be some kind of plastic, elastic or metal. The functionality of the dispenser focuses on its sliding action on the tape as the tape os pulled out.
The idea shortlisted has a better functionality as compared to the other ideas. This is much more smaller than others makes it much more pocketable and cheaper..
Simple
Easy manufacturing
Better accuracy The dispenser is given one blade on one side. which helps in shearing the tape. After the shearing happens the tape end sticks behind the blade. The tape width is regulated using the hand which would make the handling much more easier. The small shape of the dispenser makes it easy to pocket and carry around.

MOCK UP AND TESTING
MOCKUP TESTING
Peel of some tape

Put the dispenser on the tape
The experience of the pulling off the tape while the dispenser itself is sliding crowns its features. But the angle of the blade and the shape of serrations has to be worked upon... Picking up the tape again for the next use needs some improvement.
Secure the position with thumb and put the elastic through the gap. Pull the elastic to tighten .
Pull out the tape. The dispenser will slide till the pulling stops.
*Model hands credits : Nayantara Thomas.
Rip the tape off.
Several mockups of different sizes and shapes were made to test on different sizes of tape. Experimentation on different shapes of blade were done to understand the best way to shear the tape.

DOOMCOPTER CONCEPT ART SCENE 1
It’s future and a war is happening. Doom copter’s are the vehicles which do not have any weapon while they are integrated with technologies to disarm any type of machine or war equipment. They are small and quick but while disarming they get damaged too. Now they have stopped the war and returning back.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT CONCEPT FURNITURE
adapto The ADAPTO gives a new experience of sitting between a chair and a stool. It has sitting surface which would form to the body contours , giving a comfortable padding. The simplicity of the form let it ďŹ t in any type of environment and helps in easy stacking.
ADAPTO CONCEPT FURNITURE THE IDEA
STACKABILITY
FLEXIBILITY
MINIMALISTIC
Due to the use of flexible material the sitting comes back to it’s original shape which makes it easily stackable. The support rings which helps Adapto to retain the structural form also helps stacking by giving a good base.
The use of a stretchable material for sitting gives comfortable padding .
If any member is removed from Adapto , it would not work makes it one of the most minimalistic sitting furniture.
