International Conference on 'Change Management and Development Perspectives: Issues & Challenges'

Change, a constant phenomenon: “Change has been a constant phenomenon in the modern business world. The world is changing so fast that the idea of managing change is no longer relevant in the sense that it has become an integral part of organizations” said Mr. Sunder Madakshira, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, SAP LABS, India. He was speaking on the occasion of inauguration of the International Conference on 'Change Management: Issues and Development Perspectives' organized by School of Management, Manipal University, Manipal. Prof. George Stonehouse, the Dean of Business School of Edinburgh Napier University of United Kingdom, inaugurated the International Conference and praised Manipal University for a combination of thorough academic spirit as well as practicality. Dr Ramnarayan, the Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, presided over the inaugural function. Dr. K.V.M. Varambally, the Director of School of Management of Manipal University, spoke on the objectives of the conference. Dr. Smitha Nayak, the organizing secretary of the conference, welcomed the gathering. Dr Yogesh Pai P proposed vote of thanks.

Change is inevitable: “Inevitability of change must be felt acutely for the change to begin. This requires challenging the status quo. Change is compelled by business compulsions.

The impact of change is felt in the academic circles too. Therefore, several universities across the world are introducing innovative academic programmes” said Dr. H Vinod Bhat, the Pro -Vice chancellor of Manipal University. He was speaking on the occasion of the valedictory function of the international conference on “Change management: Issues and development perspectives” organized by School of Management, Manipal University. Dr. K V M Varambally, the Director of School of Management of Manipal University, presented the summary of conference proceedings. Dr Yogesh Pai welcomed the gathering. Disha Vivencia 2015

School of Management has organized an InterCollegiate Management and cultural festival called 'Vivencia 2015'. Several Management Institutes of the country are taking part in the management festival. Dr. H.S. Ballal, the Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, inaugurated 'Vivencia 2015'. Dr. KVM Varambally, the Director of School of Management, presented a brief overview of the management festival which provides practical managerial experience. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. H.S. Ballal deliberated on issues such as continual focus on quality, dynamism in

managerial situations and necessity of all-round growth of personality. Dr. Yogesh Pai P, the faculty Co-ordinator of Vivencia-2015, welcomed the delegates of the festival. Dr. Lakshminarayanan introduced Dr. H.S. Ballal. Mr. Saniej, the student Co-ordinator of Vivencia 2015, presented the challenging perspective of the spirit behind the management festival. Ms. Kavya Kumar proposed vote of thanks. About 200 students, who are representing several Management Institutes of the country, are taking part in Vivencia-2015.

HR Conclave - 2015 HR Tomorrow: Challenges Ahead 'HR Tomorrow - Challenges Ahead ' was the theme for the HR Conclave organized by HURRICANE, the HR forum of School of Management, Manipal. The conclave is a platform for fostering business and academia interaction. Mr. Shashikanth Jayaraman, Head- HR, TVS Automobile Solutions, Ltd., Chennai was the chief guest for the inaugural function. Dr. K.Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University presided over the function. Dr. K.V.M.Varambally, Director, School of Management, Manipal welcomed the eminent guests. Prof. S. Lakshmi Narayanan, gave an overview of the HR Conclave. Prof. Naveen Kumar and Prof. Ranjith introduced the guests and resource persons to the gathering. Mr. Shahsikanth Jayaraman, Head- HR, TVS Automobile Solutions, Ltd., Chennai, in his introductory speech, emphasized the importance of harnessing diversity in today's

organizations which will give a competitive edge to organizations by strengthening cultural values within an organization. He said that the organization should also focus on other forms of diversity like diversity in terms of attitude, expectations, needs and careers.

Disha FLAME Mr. Sridhar Murthy, Senior Executive-HR, SPAN Infotech (India), Pvt. Ltd., started his talk by introducing the concept of human capital management. He further spoke about the need for linking business strategy and human capital management, the importance of measuring the value and impact of human capital. He also discussed the various approaches to measure human capital. Ms. Roopa Patil, Manager-Talent Acquisition, Mindtree, Bangalore started off with a discussion on contemporary challenges in the area of HRM. She listed out the myriad challenges faced by HR Managers in managing the present day work force. Some of the challenges faced by HR managers include diverse workforce, legislation affecting the workplace and technology. She also said that the latest developments like Green HRM, IHRM, SHRM, chronic health issues, organizational development and change, career management and development, employee benefits and compensation present a new set of challenges to the HR Managers.

Guest lecture on 'Recent Trends in HR'

A guest lecture on 'Employer Branding' was organized by HURRICANE, the HR forum of School of Management. Mr. Nishith Mohanty, Chief HR Officer, Manipal Group spoke on the topic of 'Employer Branding'. He said that HR Managers must partner to prevent dysfunctional turnover. This requires understanding the 'psychological contract', the unwritten understanding regarding what both the employee and employer want from the employment relationship. He highlighted the various employer attractiveness dimensions like interest value, social value, economic value, development value and application value which the Manipal group has been practicing in order to be there among the top list of the most preferred choice of employees. While emphasizing the need and importance of employer branding, he gave examples of various steps taken by the group to build the Manipal Brand.

'FLAME', the Marketing Forum of School of Management, Manipal University, organized a daylong workshop on December 6, 2014. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate students of the Institute to learn and acquire marketing excellence. Mr. Avinash Shenoy, the Director of Lamina Suspension Products Ltd., inaugurated the workshop. While delivering his inaugural address, he said that creating relationships, customer-orientation, maintaining hope, executing efficient teamwork and constant learning constitute the mantras of marketing success. Dr. G. K. Prabhu, the Registrar of Manipal University, spoke about the need for taking calculated risks and to put forth efforts towards innovation to attain greater heights in marketing. Dr. K.V.M. Varambally, the Director of the Institute, analysed the need to go beyond the academic syllabi in order to sharpen one's marketing skills. Dr. Smitha Nayak, the coordinator of the workshop, delivered the welcome address and presented the objectives of the workshop. Prof. Suhan Mendon proposed vote of thanks. Ms. Sinchana and Ms. Sanghamitra Bhargav, alumni of School of Management, were the resource persons for the workshop.

Guest lecture on 'Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Digital Marketing'

Gaurav Prakash is a Social Media Entrepreneur and Founder and CMO at WLS Solutions. Having finished high school from Mumbai, he left for the United States

Disha to get his multi-engine commercial pilot license. He has flown aircrafts such as the Cessna 172SP, Piper Seneca, Beech Baron - BE55 and the King Air 200. He got certified as flight instructor (CFI). He started a portal for all college students in Manipal University (www.manipalthetalk.net) with a team size of 40 students. He took this experience and started the first IT start-up called Solutions For StartUp which, aims to be the one stop shop for all startups with regard to their website design and development requirements, graphic content development, application development and more. Social media service, which is being offered by Solutions For StartUp, was started as a separate entity

called The Social Media Company. This company offers end-to-end solutions for businesses looking to enhance their online presence. The company offers profile management solutions, across all platforms, a few of which are content writing, graphic development, Facebook application, OOHs and more. He has worked for major clients like Autocar India, Manipal University etc. The Social Media Company and Solutions For StartUp company are under the parent company called WLS Solutions Pvt. Ltd., which is incubated at Manipal University's incubation center, backed by DST, Government of India.

ISO 9001:2008 Lead Auditor Certification Course

A course on ISO 9001:2008 Lead Auditor Certification was inaugurated at School of Management, Manipal. Addressing the MBA students, Dr. KVM Varambally, Director of the Institute, advised the students to equip themselves with more industry- focused skills. The

course was offered by TUV Rheinland and the resource person was Mr. P. Prabhakaran, Country Head, TUV Rheinland. Ms. Swathi Umesh welcomed the participants and Ms. Kruthika Shukla proposed vote of thanks.

SIX SIGMA Green Belt Certification A certification program in Lean Six Sigma Methodology, (Green Belt) was conducted by KPMG at the School of Management (SOM), Manipal University from 12 to 15 February, 2015. The trainer sent by KPMG, Mr Pradeep Chittensetty, himself a Black Belt holder with several years of experience in training candidates in both corporations and universities, conducted this Green Belt Level Certification at SOM. An excellent turnout of 40 plus students from diverse backgrounds including management, engineering,

Disha commerce and healthcare have made this program, the first of its kind at Manipal University, and a huge success. The student coordinator, Mr Mohammad Murtaza Ali Siddiqui, under the guidance of SOM Professors, Dr Yogesh Pai and Dr Raveendra Rao and SOM Director Dr. KVM Varambally, has laid the foundation for future programs including the Six Sigma Black Belt Level Certification in the July-August period. This will improve the employability of students significantly and help attract more MNCs with bigger pay packages for the participating students.

A Corporate Guest Lecture on 'Trading in Stock Market' bring a different experience in learning where the seniors discussed important concepts in finance such as capital gains, credit swaps, depository receipts, offbalance sheet items, pass-through certificates, money market, price earnings to growth ratio, hedging, markto-market, time value, velocity of money and purchasing power parity. The students actively participated in learning these concepts. The importance and benefits of updating concepts via reading newspapers were stressed.

Driving down the cost of high-quality health care: Lessons from Aravind Eye Care System, India The Finance Forum of School of Management, Manipal organized a Corporate Guest Lecture on 'Trading in Stock Market'. It was held on 15 December, 2014 at KMC Interact Hall. Mr. Viplav Dhandhukia, Senior Technical Analyst at Karvy Stock Broking Ltd., addressed the students on trading in stock market, especially the use of technical analysis in picking stocks, tools of technical analysis and investment planning. Dr. K.V. M. Varambally, Director of School of Management, addressed the students and emphasized on the importance of investing in equity market and mutual funds and how it can multiply one's earnings. Miss. Vani Ranjan compered the programme.

School of Management, Manipal University conducted a guest lecture on 'Driving down the cost of high-quality health care', for the students of MBA Health care Management. Ms. Janani, a member of Student Forum, welcomed the guest. The guest speaker was Mr. Sanil Joseph, Senior Faculty and Hospital Management consultant, Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology, Aravind Eye Care System, India. He spoke about how Aravinda Eye care developed itself over the years adding vision to millions of people. He spoke on the business model of Aravind Eye care system.

Seminar on Essential Financial Concepts A seminar on Essential Financial Concepts was conducted by the Finance Forum of School of Management, Manipal. The seminar was organized and headed by Dr. Savitha, Associate Professor, School of Management, Manipal. Students of II MBA gave a seminar to students of I MBA on the topic 'Demystifying Finance'. The main objective was to

Disha INSIGHT- 2014: 'Healthcare Delivery at Grass-root Level'

The MBA Healthcare Management student forum of School of Management, Manipal University, organized a day long workshop INSIGHT- 2014 on “Healthcare Delivery at Grass-root Level� on November 29, 2014. Mr. Amritayan Das, Associate District Coordinator, BBC Media Action, Delhi was the resource person of the event. Dr. (col). M Dayananda (Medical superintendent & COO, Kasturba Hospital), Chief Guest of the inaugural function, delivered key-note address highlighting the major problems faced in healthcare delivery by the rural population of India. He said that there should be proper distribution of healthcare resources in rural and urban areas. He

emphasized on the need for regionalization of healthcare facilities, the urgency to see that primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services are utilized appropriately based on the needs of population. The guest of honor and speaker for the day Mr. Amrithayan Das. He emphasized on the challenges in delivering healthcare services especially in the rural areas of India. Dr. K V M Varambally, Director of School of Management, addressed the gathering highlighting the three mantras of healthcare delivery i.e., affordability, accessibility and acceptability. He also said that there is a need for integration of the different medicine systems in India for ensuring the delivery of preventive, promotive and curative healthcare services. Ms. Ankitha Tiwary, a member of student forum was the master of ceremony. Student forum member Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Manseeb, welcomed the gathering and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Roopa Chandrashekar, a member of student forum. Dr. Yogesh Pai and Dr. Swathi K.S. coordinated the event. More than 80 delegates from various institutes of Manipal University participated in the workshop.

Guest lecture Series on 'Managerial Issues in Hospitals'

School of Management, Manipal University organized a guest lecture on 'Managerial Issues in Hospitals' for the students of MBA Health care Management on 19 December, 2014. The guest speaker was Dr. Ranjan Shetty, Professor, Department of Cardiology, KMC, Manipal. He spoke about the managerial issues to be addressed by management professionals in hospitals. Dr. Ranjan Shetty also highlighted the roles and responsibilities of managers in bridging the gap between healthcare professionals and management.

The talk was an eye-opener for the healthcare management students as it helped them to know the expectations from the doctors in delivering high quality healthcare services to their patients. He also emphasized on the ethical practice in the field of healthcare management. Dr. K. V. M. Varambally, Director, School of Management delivered welcome address and introduced the guest to the gathering. The faculty members of the Institute were present on the occasion.

Disha Guest lecture on 'Entrepreneurial avenues in Healthcare Sector: Challenges'

Healthcare Management forum of School of Management organized a guest lecture for the students of MBA Healthcare Management. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Shreedhar Rao, Founder & Director of Dr. Rao's Ayurveda Sanctuary, Udupi, on February 27, 2015. SOM has been organizing a series of guest lectures under the title “Doctors' experience: A lecture series� to update the student community with real-time inputs from healthcare professionals. In continuation of the series, Dr. Rao addressed the issues relating to 'Entrepreneurial avenues in Healthcare: Challenges'.

He emphasized on opportunities in setting up healthcare centers in the field of Indian medicine system under the broader framework of medical tourism. Dr. Rao shared his experience and the issues that need to be taken care of while establishing catering healthcare service units. He highlighted that less explored/unexplored areas need to be tapped while planning for setting up one's own enterprise so as to achieve success. Dr. Swathi K S delivered the welcome address and Ms. Deena Grace Abhigael introduced the guest speaker to the gathering.

Health Awareness and Career Orientation The Social Service forum of School of Management is constituted with an objective of encouraging students to undertake various socially responsible activities that benefit the society and general public. Students of MBA program are involved in organizing various activities, in this regard, in and around the region of Manipal. The students of the forum organised a health awareness and career orientation program at the Government High School, Shivapura Village, Karkala Taluk, on 22 August, 2014. The focus of this initiative was two-fold, firstly, to educate students of the rural school on health and hygiene issues, various health risks, and guide them regarding how to protect themselves against diseases by adopting health and hygiene promoting habits and practices. Secondly, the students were given direction on careerrelated options to enable them to take decisions on their goals and career options. As part of the program,

students of MBA have contributed Rs.4000 to the school, towards making ID cards of students. Dr. K.V.M Varambally, Director of SOM, handed over the amount to Head master Mr. Manjappa. The faculty coordinators Ms. Smitha Nayak, Dr. Swathi K.S. and 25 students were present on the occasion.

Disha Parichay The students' forum of the School of Management, Manipal University, organized 'Parichay 2014', the annual fest for junior students, from July 26 to August 5, 2014. Speaking at the valedictory function, Pramod M. Fernandes, Vice President, Manipal Technologies Limited, said that students should remain focused throughout their course. Dr. KVM Varambally, Director of the Institute, emphasized on the importance of interaction, participative learning and brand building in showcasing one's real worth.

Clean and Green Programme 'Clean n Green Program' was organized by the Social Service Forum of School of Management in association with Rotary Club of Manipal Hills on the 4 November, 2014 at Mannupalla in Manipal. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Satish Shetty, former Director, Blood Bank, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. The student team was led by Dr. KVM Varambally, Director of School of Management & Dr. Smitha Nayak, Assistant

Professor, School of Management. The initiative was appreciated by Dr. Satish Shetty. He said that this was the perfect platform that would enable the Institute to inculcate the values in budding managers of tomorrow. Students cleaned the premises of Mannupalla. Senior citizens in and around the Mannupalla area and members of Rotary Club also took part in the activity.

Disha National Education Day National Unity Day 'Rastriya Ekta Diwas' (National Unity Day) was observed at School of Management, Manipal University on October 31, 2014. The pledge was administered in all classes. The class representatives administered the pledge. The pledge was circulated among teaching and non-teaching members of the Institute. The students participated in speech and collage competitions.

On the auspicious occasion of National Education day, School of Management celebrated the day under the directives of UGC (University Grants Commission). It was the birth anniversary of one of the greatest stalwarts of our country, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. He was the person who started UGC and was the first Education Minister of postindependent India. Prof. Srikant Prabhu, MIT delivered a zestful speech. The entire speech was full of knowledge, inspiration, motivation and encouragement to the young minds.

Birth Anniversary of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee An oratory competition was conducted for MBA students, as per the instruction from AICTE, on December 24, 2014 as part of observing the birthday of Shri A.B Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India. Eight students delivered speech on “The Role of Innovation in Economic Development�.

Sports 2014-15

The Annual Athletic Sports & Games Week of School of Management, Manipal was held from October 20, 2014 to December 17, 2014. Various games like Badminton, Chess, Table Tennis, Cricket, Football, Basket Ball, Volley Ball and Throw ball were conducted for the students of SOM. On 17 December 2014, the last day of the meet, Athletics Events were held. Dr. Anice George, Dean, Manipal College of Nursing, the Chief Guest of the inaugural function took the salute which marked the beginning of the meet. Dr. K.V.M. Varambally, Director, School of Management, Manipal, while addressing the

gathering, emphasized that participation is more important in sports events rather than winning. This mindset promotes team spirit and camaraderie. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Anice George gave a brief about the various sports and games facilities provided by the University and the initiatives taken by the University to promote sports and games among students. She also highlighted that events like this will provide help to students to mentally prepare themselves to face the academic challenges. Mr. Ponnanna, Sports Secretary of SOM, administered the oath to the athletes.

Disha Matribhasha Diwas

UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Tongue Day. As per the directives of Union Government of India in connection with this, School of Management, Manipal University celebrated Matrubhasha Divas on February 24, 2015.

The objectives behind celebration of Matrubhasha Day included sensitizing people about the need for greater use of mother tongue and other Indian languages. Further, it also helps in highlighting the need to impart the importance of mother tongue among students, the communication skills and proficiency in mother tongue and other Indian languages. Mr. Sudipto, student of first year MBA, coordinated the entire event under the guidance of the faculty coordinators i.e. Dr. Yogesh Pai and Dr. Lakshmi Narayanan. Various events like quiz, singing, elocution and dance competitions were conducted on the campus to commemorate the event.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF SOM STUDENTS IN THE SPORTS AND GAMES EVENTS FOR THE YEAR 2014 -2015

The selection for the Manipal University Badminton team for the year 2014-15 was held during 11-14 December, 2014 at MIT badminton court. Out of thirty four players in the men section, only six were selected to represent Manipal University in the South Zone Inter University Badminton Tournament. In the women section, out of fifteen players only four were selected to represent the Manipal University. In the first time in the history of Manipal University the men's team reached the semifinal of the South Zone Inter University Badminton Tournament 2014-15 and in the process they got selected for All India National. The men's team secured fourth place in the South Zone Inter University Badminton Tournament 2014-15 and in the All India Inter University Badminton Tournament

they secured eighth place. The women's team lost in the quarterfinals of the event. Mr. Venkatesh Kamath and Ms. Preksha Mayadi of School of Management, Manipal represented Manipal University in the South Zone National Level Badminton Tournament held at Coimbatore from 26 December, 2014-29 December, 2014. In the Manipal University Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet which was held on 16 &17 February, 2015 at MIT grounds, Mr. Allan Foster D'Silva secured first place and won a gold medal in 110 Meters hurdles. He also set a new University meet record. Ms. Pavitra Kademani secured first place and won a gold medal in the hammer throw event.

Disha UPWAVE: Unleashing Potential of Women Association for Value Enhancement

POWER (Platform of Women Entrepreneurs Reg), with the organizational support of School of Management, Manipal University, is launching a new initiative UPWAVE: Unleashing Potential or Women Association for Value Enhancement This forum is geared towards championing entrepreneurship through targeted programs that would collectively address the unemployment problem among women by providing them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills, training in marketable

job-oriented skills, and access to resources and linkages needed to realize their potential as young social and economic entrepreneurs. Dr. Smitha Nayak, Associate Professor, SOM, is the Faculty Coordinator of UPWAVE and Ms. Abigel, a student of first year MBA- Healthcare Management, will be the President. Ms. Nambratha and Ms. Megha, the students of first year MBA program, are the Joint Secretaries.

International Woman's Day International Woman's Day was celebrated on March 8, 2015, at School of Management (SOM), Manipal University. Disha Annual Day

School of Management, Manipal University, conducted its annual day on March 16, 2015 at MIT Library Auditorium. The chief guest Mr. C. M. Natarajan, HR Manager at BASF India Ltd., mentioned the changing role of HR to develop every employee. He also highlighted the two key factors that an individual must possess in order to enter an organisation academic credentials and positive attitude. The guest of honour, Mr. Jayson. M, AGM HR at HCG group of hospitals emphasized on building a strong network and knowing one's areas of improvement. Dr. G. K. Prabhu, registrar, Manipal University presided over the annual day function. Dr. K.V.M Varambally , Director, School of Management, presented the annual report where he highlighted some of the key events that were conducted by the Institute during the year 2014 -15 like Vivencia, the School of Management fest - Parichay, HR forum - CONCLAVE, Marketing forum - FLAME and various other events. Dr. V. K. Ranjith welcomed the gathering. Dr. Pallavi Upadhyaya proposed the vote of thanks. The inauguration was followed by the prize distribution ceremony for various activities and the cultural ceremony which featured several cultural programmes.

Symposium on 'Economic Growth and Financial Inclusiveness'

Finance forum of School of Management of Manipal University organized a symposium on 'Economic Growth and Inclusiveness' on 21 March, 2015. Prof. Charan Singh, RBI Chair, Professor of Economics inaugurated the symposium. Delivering his inaugural address, he said that financial inclusion is one of the surest means to achieve economic growth. He explained the welfare orientation, growth orientation, policy orientation and the action orientation embedded in the Budget 2015. Mr. Allen CA Pereira, former Chairman of Bank of Maharashtra, explained how banks can realize the objective of financial inclusion. Alumni Meet 2014 Alumni Meet 2014 of School of Management was held on 15 November, 2014 at MIT AC Seminar hall. The Institute was started in the year 1999 and from then till 2014, 15 batches have passed out. Students of School of Management have reached responsible and senior positions in the industry. Alumni of the Institute expressed their intentions to lend their helping hands and support the Institute. There are plans now, in the Institute, to brief the current batches of the students regarding the corporate expectations. Many alumni shared their industry experiences
