SUMMARY OF PROJECT:
THE OXFORD ALL-WAY
THE PROJECT BEGAN WITH THE BOOK: THE RE ENCHANTMENT OF EVERYDAY LIFE (THOMAS MOORE). IT IS A SELF HELP BOOK FOR LOVING THE LITTLE THINGS IN YOUR EVERYDAY. THE POINT OF FOCUS I TOOK FROM THIS WAS THE EVERYDAY OBJECT AS KEY. A ROUND UP OF MY RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY IS THAT THE THINGS AROUND YOU ARE PART OF A RITUAL, A ROUTINE AND THEY ARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE UP THE EVERYDAY.
LOCATING THE SITE THE EXISTING SITE THE PROPOSED SITE BUILDING PERSPECTIVES
MY SITE IS THE ISLAND SITE, IN OXFORD (IT IS THE TRIANGULAR PIECE OF LAND PASSED AS YOU ENTER THE CITY, WITH HYTHE BRIDGE STREET AND PARK END STREET LOCATED ON EITHER SIDE). THIS IS A SITE THAT IS PART OF THE CITY USERS RITUALS AND ROUTINES BUT IT IS NOT USED WELL, IT IS SEGREGATED INTO DIFFERENT BUSINESSES AND MOST OF THESE LAY EMPTY UNITS OR FAILED BUSINESSES. THE FUNDAMENTAL FUNCTION OF THE BUILDING IS TO BE A PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE: “A THOROUGHFARE IS A ROAD OR WAY CONNECTING ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER.” THE BUILDING WILL AIM AT CONNECTING BOTH THE CITY AND THE PEOPLE WHO USE IT BY DESIGNING FOR THE EVERYDAY LIFE THAT RUNS THROUGH IT AND REFLECTING THE EVERYDAY WITHIN.
THIS BOOK FOCUSES ON THE PROPOSED DESIGN.
North elevation of Hythe bridge street
South elevation of Park End street
HYTHE BRIDGE STREET The north face of the site, aethetically is looks like the traders entrance of the businesses that sit within the site boundary. There is heavy footfall and also heavy traffic congestion experienced on this road. It is the most common route used to enter the city by foot from the trainstation. There is a clear difference in each property that hosts different businesses, one modern business ‘futon’ inhabits the ground floor central space and a resturant to the west end of the buildings, other than this the facades show empty buildings and uninhabited spaces. The street is overshadowed by the island site and feels rather closed in by heights of both sides.
PARK END STREET The south face to the Island, a longer stretch of buildings due to the extended building length east towards the city. A heavy mix of businesses at different levels gives a collaged effect of facades. Two large buildings currently stand empty and one provides a view through to hythe bridge street. various buildings heights re included on this facade and it deals with heavy traffic congestion siilar to hythe bridge street. the street recieves direct sunlight with shadowing caused an old warehouse opposite The pedestrian flow is less, however this street deals with a raise in activity at night. Three popular nightclubs are located on this street and often queing takes over the pedestrian walkway.
