THIS BOOK FOCUSES ON THE KEY THEMES AND RESEARCH OF THE PROJECT NARRATIVE: THE EVERYDAY. TAKING FORARD THEMES FROM SEMESTER ONE AND APPLYING THEM TO CREATE A DESIGN APPROACH.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT:

THE OXFORD ALL-WAY

THE PROJECT BEGAN WITH THE BOOK: THE RE ENCHANTMENT OF EVERYDAY LIFE (THOMAS MOORE). IT IS A SELF HELP BOOK FOR LOVING THE LITTLE THINGS IN YOUR EVERYDAY. THE POINT OF FOCUS I TOOK FROM THIS WAS THE EVERYDAY OBJECT AS KEY. A ROUND UP OF MY RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY IS THAT THE THINGS AROUND YOU ARE PART OF A RITUAL, A ROUTINE AND THEY ARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE UP THE EVERYDAY. MY SITE IS THE ISLAND SITE, IN OXFORD (IT IS THE TRIANGULAR PIECE OF LAND PASSED AS YOU ENTER THE CITY, WITH HYTHE BRIDGE STREET AND PARK END STREET LOCATED ON EITHER SIDE). THIS IS A SITE THAT IS PART OF THE CITY USERS RITUALS AND ROUTINES BUT IT IS NOT USED WELL, IT IS SEGREGATED INTO DIFFERENT BUSINESSES AND MOST OF THESE LAY EMPTY UNITS OR FAILED BUSINESSES. THE FUNDAMENTAL FUNCTION OF THE BUILDING IS TO BE A PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE: “A THOROUGHFARE IS A ROAD OR WAY CONNECTING ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER.” THE BUILDING WILL AIM AT CONNECTING BOTH THE CITY AND THE PEOPLE WHO USE IT BY DESIGNING FOR THE EVERYDAY LIFE THAT RUNS THROUGH IT AND REFLECTING THE EVERYDAY WITHIN.

THE BREIF

THE FUNDAMENTAL FUNCTION OF THIS BUILDING IS A PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE “A THOROUGHFARE IS A ROAD OR WAY CONNECTING ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER.” IMPLEMENTING THIS CONCEPT ONTO THE ISLAND SITE, CREATING A CONNECTION FROM PARK END STREET TO HYTHE BRIDGE STREET, AND BY CREATING VISUAL, PHYSICAL AND ACCESSIBLE LINKS FOR THE TWO STREETS BY UNDERSTANDING THE RHYTHMS OF THE CITY. USING ARCADES, PASSAGEWAYS AND THE HALLWAY TO DEVELOP A PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE WITH MOMENTS TO PAUSE, SIT AND MOVE INCORPORATED AROUND ONE MAIN PATHWAY. PLAYING ON THE OXFORD CITY USERS AS THREE MAIN GROUPS: RESIDENTS, WORKERS AND TOURISTS, TO DEVELOP A UNDEFINED TYPOLOGY THAT IS A MIX USE PUBLIC CENTRE FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF OXFORDS EVERYDAY AS AN INSTITUTE, BUT AS A PLATFORM FOR THE CITY TO GO ABOUT THE DAILY RHYTHMS AND PATTERNS OF THEIR EVERYDAY, USING THE SITE TO DO THIS.
