About me.
I am well rounded student within design, my particular strengths lie in ideation development, presentation, sketching, model making and computer applications. I am a young motivated designer seeking a placement starting March 2016. I am a confident team worker which is shown in collective university projects and also when I teach martial arts. I have a diverse range of experience from previous briefs, these include working with:
Experience.
The nationl Lottery Fund: Built on my team skills and can easily work with others in group activities. Other: Working at my family buisness I’ve gained a lot of experience coping well with stress as I have worked in fast paced environments such as a bar, cafe/restaurant. Working in an office environment also helped me build on new experiences and work ethic.
Interests.
Music, Guitar, Mixed Martial Arts ( jiu jitsu, mauy thai, boxing, wrestling) these have given me great discipline, Product design, Architecture, General Socializing, fashion and shoes.

The Newton Vase “Anticipating the drop, anticipates life “
01
After my initial ideas I decided that the anticipation of dropping the object was important, but only as a starting point. In order to come up with a truly innovative design that would clearly show anticipation, I would have to think about the natural things that would go inside the vase. The water and the plant.
anticipation
Upright Vase
Water is added
Vase tilts when water is filled
When the water is absorbed the vase stands upright, anticipating that the plant needs more water or may soon
I came up with the idea that the position of the vase would indicate how much water was left in the vase or if the plant needs water. Explained in the diagram bellow. The way that it works is basically the exchanging of weight distribution.
If the product would actually be made it would be formed in the classic way of making a vase from clay. The centre of gravity would be really important and so would the weight of the product inorder for the product to actually anticipate when it is empty or full. It would come in all ranges of colours, but I believe the most effective colours would be natural and earthy such as:
The Newton Vase “Anticipating the drop, anticipates life “ The name of the product I have came up with is ‘The Newton Vase’. The reason for this being because the product uses gravity in order to anticipate the flowers needing water. Anticipating the drop, anticipates life.

LAUNCH
YOUTH SPORT DIRECT Insight & Opportunity When visiting Cedars Academy and looking into the types of disibilities they deal with, it became apparent to me that the people within wheelchairs couldn’t always use the ability they wanted. One particular student stood out to me; she was in a wheelchair but didn’t have much use of her hands or her upper body. This made me realise that target games could be a challenge as she couldn’t throw a ball for example. However, she could use her legs perfectly. This gave me the idea to design something to aid her and others like her, or someone more capable. This would mean everyone would have a chance to join in.
LAUNCH
I went away and designed a sort of hand held catapult like device. This could be strapped to the armrest of the wheel chair or in other cases the footrest, or even held. From the sketches you can see examples of how the product would work in an actual target game.
The end product was slightly changed in order to make it easier for the user. Instead of it just being one set power, the mechanism was changed in order for the choice of power output. Same crossbow mechanism, different loading standard.

Non Literal Product.
Using design to create a product that is not literal, meaning, there is no clear conformity. However, the design should encapsulate and give hints towards the electronic form.

Model Making.
04
Hierarchical Forms Using high density foam i created four forms that showed and example of hierarchy. With many coats of paint and hours of sanding, the end product turned out highly satisfying.
Lego man Figure With the use of high density foam for the head and arms, jelutong for the legs and MDF for the torso. I created a scale model of a lego man.
Solidworks Bic Pen Taking the pen apart and measuring each part meant I could get the exact details in order to re-model the pen using the software
Fun Theory.
05
Fun Theory gave me and my group the oppitunity to tackle problems by making them more fun for people to do. We chose the activity of crossing the road. Instead of people just crossing without using a marked crossing we designed a station that had a marked map to check on locations, it also played music and told you when it was time to cross the road. The actual prototype was mainly taken on board by me. The design was to hook on to the original crossing board that had nothing but a button, this meant we were utilising the wasted space on the device.

fetch
The fitness tracker for dogs.
Owners of dogs occasionally have problems with the fitness of their pets. They can end up obese if the amount they eat is greater than the amount they exercise. Some people may believe that taking their dog for a short walk may be enough but that isn’t always the case. My design proposal is a product called fetch. It is a motion sensored, tracking toy that helps keep up with your dogs exercise. The initial idea is that the bone/stick shaped toy is thrown and a timer is set off on the accompanied app. The middle part of the product is the motion sensored part, this can be dissembled and attatched to other potential fetch toys.
How the app works Initial opening of the app
Once app is open you will put the breed, age and the health of your dog to determine the exercise time. For example active breeds need a minimum of 30 minutes of hard aerobic exercise most days of the week.
Once the time has been chosen the fetch toy will be thrown to set the timer off then the dog will run for the toy. There is also a tracker on the toy so it isn’t lost.

Permanent click fixings in order to keep the mechanism inside the fetch shell. This will not come undone.
Toy side attatchments (screw/Unscrewed) Main fetch casing for mechanism
The whole of the product would be made of ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) The reason for this is that it is durable, non-toxic, impact resistant and it can all be recycled. This could be made into another fetch toy or any other potential plastc product. When the toy is thrown and chewed by the dog it won’t easily break. The dog can run around with the toy as much as it wants, completing its given exercise time. The product would be manufactured using injection moulding as it is cost effective and the material used would easily mask its mould making a finished product.
I am currently seeking a 3-6 month work placement starting in march 2016, if you have any questions or believe I would suit the job contact me. Thank you. +44 7446961800 ashlee.harding@northumbria.ac.uk
