Business excellence The Stanley Historic Event Space has changed the landscape and vitality of Downtown in the most positive of ways, and the members of this family-owned business have been invaluable to the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street organization. When Bryan and Cindy King bought the building at the corner of Third and Douglas streets in Downtown Lee’s Summit, they and their children, Jennifer and Tyler, poured their hearts and a great deal of money into renovating the historic building in the most thoughtful and responsible of ways, opening in August 2010 as a beautiful wedding and event venue. The Stanley is known as one of the most sought-after event spaces in the Kansas City area, bringing new people to Downtown Lee’s Summit weekly and driving business to Downtown shops and restaurants. Earlier this year, the King Family brought together other merchants to host a retail-wedding event for prospective couples called Bridal Bliss. This first-time event bought hundreds of visitors to Downtown Lee’s Summit on a Sunday afternoon. The Stanley Historic Event Space has been so successful in just two years, having to turn events away as they book up so fast, the King family, who all work at The Stanley and also operate the Something Borrowed event rental business, have opened a second event, retail and rooftop meeting space next door to its current building. The King family has made a significant investment with their new building, which will have two retail spaces on the first floor and the Aspen Room event space on the second floor. The third-floor terrace also will be open for events. Opening in July 2013, the Aspen Room already is booked throughout 2013 and into 2014. The King family utilized a LCRA (Land Clearance Redevelopment Authority) tax abatement to help fund their new building, and despite having not been passed yet at the time, they also voluntarily adhered to a majority of the Downtown Core Area Design Standards, utilizing high-quality materials such as stone and brick. This building serves as an excellent example of quality new construction that respects the historic aspects of the Downtown Lee’s Summit area. For the past two years, The Stanley has opened its doors to a variety of Downtown Lee’s Summit events at no charge to Main Street, including
the Annual DLSMS Holiday Reception, Economic Restructuring Business Seminars, the Cookie Walk, and the Missouri Main Street Resource Team visits. The Stanley also has been a major monetary sponsor of Main Street, bringing the Lee’s Summit Symphony to DLSMS’s largest fundraiser, the Downtown Days festival, and purchasing a public outdoor art sculpture. “The Giving Tree” for Downtown Lee’s Summit. Owner Bryan King, who was named Downtown Lee’s Summit’s New Member Dynamo in 2012, serves on DLSMS’s Economic Restructuring Committee and the Downtown Days Committee. This year, he volunteered to take on an expanded role on the Downtown Days Committee, taking on the beer/drink sales coordination, working with distributors before the event, and then working at the event for four days to ensure everything ran smoothly. Beer/drink sales are the second largest revenue-producing activity at Downtown Days, next to booth rentals. King also has been instrumental in helping DLSMS with a project to get over-the-street banners placed between his building on the corner of Third and Douglas streets and the building across the street from his, even paying for the system and installation. Historic photos show that at one time banners hung over Third Street, announcing events and parades, and DLSMS is excited The Stanley is helping bring this tradition back to Downtown Lee’s Summit. “Downtown Lee’s Summit is alive with the potential for more growth and community involvement,” said Bryan King. “We feel the amount of people that are drawn to Downtown Lee’s Summit from all over the greater KC area provides us with a lot of exposure. The sense of community involvement is just an added plus to owning a business in this nationally ranked ‘Best Downtown in the Country.’” The King family is known for their integrity, their involvement, their attention to detail, and their commitment to the community and to Main Street, and they are well respected among the other Downtown merchants. They see the value in having their business in Downtown Lee’s Summit, as their clients want to experience this vibrant historic area bustling with activity. And Downtown Lee’s Summit has benefited greatly from The Stanley presence and is grateful for the King family and their continuing investment in Downtown Lee’s Summit.

Small Town Values
Big Time Thinking Having lived and worked in both New York and Los Angeles, I appreciate the fact that Lee’s Summit isn’t just a dot on a map of Missouri. I have discovered that Lee’s Summit’s collaborative business culture continues to serve as a fertile hot house where business investment can not only take root, but more importantly grow strong and prosper. Our small town values and big time thinking are what differentiates Lee’s Summit from other cities. As a community we take great pride in the success of our local businesses. When one dreams we all dream. When one succeeds… we all succeed. Because we all share the same values when it comes to hard work, jAMES MCKENNA character and a moral sense of responsibility. As someone relatively new to the community, I can objectively appreciate Lee’s Summit what some might take for granted. I find Lee’s Summit to be a place where folks Brand Manager are enthusiastic and forward thinking. It’s an island of refreshingly real people in a sea of artificial sameness. It’s a place where big ideas and a can-do attitude hold the promise of a community where all things are possible. This is a community that inspires and attracts individuals whose eyes are on the future and hearts are full of possibilities. It’s populated by folks who have a genuine appreciation for the values you find in a small town. And still they’re willing to take on the challenges today that will ensure a much better tomorrow. That’s what the soul of the Lee’s Summit brand is all about.

Room for more
Aspen Room and Rooftop opens as companion to the historic space by toriano porter tporter@lsjournal.com
The reservations for the Aspen Room and Rooftop were made long before the building opened its doors. Although the facility that adjourns the Stanley Historic Event Space in downtown Lee’s Summit officially opened a day before its first wedding event, owners Cindy and Bryan King had booked the facility months in advance of its unveiling. Don’t fret for the Kings, however, as their latest venture has been a hit with the clients that have so far used the space at 308 S.E. Douglas Street. “That was something,” Cindy King said of the booking process. “We were selling space off of blueprints and renderings. We didn’t take that lightly. We took that with a lot of heart. We knew that these brides – this is their big day, so we wanted to make sure that everything that we told them was going to come to be. Everyone that has come in here and looked at it…I haven’t heard anything negative about it.” “We took it really seriously because it’s their big day,” Bryan King said. “Wedding day for the bride, there is no other day like it. We couldn’t be late. This was one of those types of construction jobs that (being late to open) wasn’t even an option.” The Kings said the Aspen Room and Rooftop, which can hold between 250-300 people, is larger than the Historic Space and more equipped to accommodate a larger event.

“It can hold more people,” Cindy King said, before adding “the rooftop – there is really not a place in the greater Kansas City area that offers this except for downtown Kansas City. There are a few spaces down there that have it. But, if you go out to the suburbs – not that I’m aware of – there is not a space that has rooftop capacity where you could get married on the rooftop and actually have 280 people up there. The rooftop has been a big hit. A lot of people want to do the rooftop.” Added Bryan: “It has a lot more flexibility. We can house caterers in here versus having them work out of their trucks to take food in. The bars are more equipped and more complete. The sound system is probably a lot more advanced. The main focus was to build a facility that could handle more people, bigger crowds; bigger groups.” Just as the Historic Space, the Aspen Room is owned and operated by Cindy and Bryan and their children Jennifer Hendricks and Tyler King. Tyler King is knee-deep in the operations and financial side of the business, while Hendricks’ expertise is in planning, organizing and monitoring the logistics of weddings, special events and meetings. “They are a key to the success of this business,” Bryan King said of his children. “We are a family-owned business and we work and run the day-to-day (operations) and we are very proud of that fact.” Bryan King also added that the Aspen Room and Rooftop has predominately hosted wedding events so far, but the family hopes to expand the amount of business meetings and seminars held in both buildings over the next year.
